Do we know when the new name will be announced ?

Pretty soon I'd imagine if they've already narrowed the choices down to four.

Thunder...?
sounds like a wnba team its lame. cmon they can do better.
Sun Jul 20, 2008 12:41 pm
i keep going on with Thunderdogs

Thunder is such a lazy lame for an nba team. it is way off (appeal)than the supersonics. it just shows that bennett doesn't have any class in figuring a name for his nba team.
Sun Jul 20, 2008 1:09 pm
Its looks like its going to be the OKC Thunder...
IMO it sounds too generic, like some Arena Football team.
It will probably be a few years before I get used to it.
According to the survey on koco.com,
Love it (145) --23%
Like it (111) --17%
Lukewarm (181) --28%
Hate it (199) --31%

hahahaha
seems like whatever the new name gets chosen, it'll take some time to get used to...

realGM confirms that it will be "Thunder"
The new Oklahoma City franchise has nicknamed itself the Thunder, according to a report Saturday on the web site of the city’s ABC affiliate.
Citing a source close to ownership, KOCO-TV reported that the “registrar for all of the NBA’s Internet domain names were reserved okcthunderbasketball.com and okcthunderbasketball.net on July 10,” suggesting that the franchise formerly known as the Seattle SuperSonics will soon be renamed.
Too close from the OKC football team (women)
Outlaws would have been a better choice

Thunder? Why don't they pick a cooler name like Dragons, or Shark, or something badass, like, Predators.
Sun Jul 20, 2008 10:57 pm
Not a bad name per se but somehow it just doesn't feel right as the moniker of an NBA team.
Sun Jul 20, 2008 11:55 pm
Sounds too much like an NHL team for me.
The logo will probably look similar to the Tampa Bay Lightning logo:

My sentiments exactly... could be worse, but it does not conjure any basketball images for me.
Okay, maybe just one-- obviously a huge dunk could be connected with Thunder, but otherwise, I don't feel the connection. Oh well, time will tell.

A news wire aggregator can confirm things now? By posting the same story already linked above?

And a SuperSonic does? Or a Celtic? Or a Timberwolf? Or a Spur? How about a sailing vessel? Or a purple dinosaur?

I fully understand your point and wouldn't necessarily disagree. But... Thunder is a sound, nothing physical to it. The other things at least have tangible things associated with them- except SuperSonics, of course, but even that is about speed, which can obviously be basketball related.
Timberwolf/Raptor= predators. conjures images of pack hunters, like a basketball team.
Clipper= a very fast boat.
Spur= Used to speed up a horse.
Celtics= Historically, Celts were known as Headhunters.
Thunder is just a sound. I could buy the notion of an arena being loud, etc... but that's pushing it a bit further than a direct connection like an animal or something.
I think both sides are perfectly valid opinions. Also, it's just a matter of it being new and strange.

I can see it now, something like this on the front of their jerseys.
are their colors going to be black, dark blue, grey?

That's not even thunder, it's lightning.
The OKC name sucks.

Good luck finding a picture of thunder. Its a noise, not an actual object.
Mon Jul 21, 2008 2:39 am
Thus the point of the name sucking.

^

You got a point there.
I agree with Andrew. I just don't think it fits an NBA team or any basketball team for that matter. I would have preferred Barons or something. But it's whatever, I don't care about them anyway.
Mon Jul 21, 2008 5:37 am
for thunder you may need a logo showing what their noise will do to opposing teams
on second thought thunder can be reference to the sound a stampede of horses or cattle make make. so therefor it would not be illogical to put a horse or bovine type animal as the logo.

The thing is, I can't really explain why I feel that way. As Melwing pointed out, it could just be a matter of it being new and strange as I felt the same way about the Bobcats (and still do to a certain extent) but then I can't explain why I didn't find the Raptors or Grizzlies to be strange names when they entered the league back in 1995. In time, I'll probably be used to it.

Its going to be cool when they do the starting lineups. Just think of the undertakers entrance but without the fog. Lightning and thunder. LOL.
