950 AM Radio in Philadelphia is reporting that
Elton Brand is about to sign with the Philadelphia 76ers. No terms of the deal have been released yet.
Many believed that Elton Brand would return to the Los Angeles Clippers, after he chose to opt out so the Clippers could add other talent. The Clippers had to renounce their rights to both Elton Brand and Corey Maggette to be able to sign Baron Davis. Then, they hoped to sign Brand too.
Today, the Sixers traded a future first round pick, Rodney Carney and Calvin Booth to Minnesota so they could add a $2.9 million trade exception and increase the salary cap space they had.
No one knew whether it would be Josh Smith or Elton Brand that space would be offered to. But 950, an ESPN affiliate, is reporting that a deal is done.
Brand is familiar with the area, because his doctor who performed ACL surgery for him last year is located in North Delaware, which is about 15 minutes from Philadelphia.
Brand played in only a handful of games last year due to that injury and expects to be at full strength this year.
Deals can be officially signed tomorrow, July 9th.

If this is true, it´s AWSOME! Now we have good young core + Brand. Can´t wait for this season.

ratrac, You are a member of the Sixers organization? We?
It really sucks to be the Clippers right now. The Leastern Conference is turning into the Beastern conference. The Sixers have a great big 3, and a solid starting 5. Lets just hope this doesn't become Ben Wallace 2.

No, but I´m fan of them and I usually use we then

If the clippers had signed Elton Brand + Davis I really thought they had a good opportunity to compete for a western playoff spot.
What does LA do w/ their cap space now? Do they resign Corey Maggette?
I had just started a Philadelphia team on Dynasty mode, I'm considering weather I should restart now?

I still think Maggette is done in LA, they would been much better team with Brand+Davis, but now probably lottery again...

woah... i didn't see it coming. i wonder what will happen to the clippers now? is al thornton a PF? if that is so then he can replace brand in the starting line-up. if not, i don't know if there's anyone who could replace him in their roster. maybe the clippers will just look on to the free agents and see if they can acquire a passable replacement to brand.

Wonder when RealGM will have this up.
Wed Jul 09, 2008 11:34 am
C'mon Brand, you know you want us
Wed Jul 09, 2008 11:37 am
Wow.. I thought EB would surely resign with the Clippers especially with the addition of Baron Davis.. If the Sixers can resign Iguodala and get Brand they will be a contender in the East ..

This is a smart move. With the Sixers, Brand could actually consider reaching the Finals in his career. And he fills a hole.
There was no reason to go back to the Clippers for less money just to keep losing fifty games every season.

The
Clippers. Ugh. Ah well, at least he has a lot of money.

You can't start a dynasty in the off-season and expect teams to keep their current rosters. You can "trade" Brand to the Sixers by DBF editing.
I hope this work fot Philadelphia, they didn't have luck with big names like Webber and Robinson.

as long as hes healthy, he can be all-star caliber.
maybe a little high on the salary but a good move

There's quite a difference between adding a 28 year old superstar and adding a 31 year old former superstar on the downturn of his career or a 31 year old non-star on his way out of the league. Especially since Webber and Robinson were inefficient major possession users trying to be a "sidekick" to Iverson.

He has to be disappointed, though the fact he's walking away from more money and a team that in any other year probably would have made the Playoffs (and did the year before) suggests he really wanted out of Golden State. If so, he's probably still happy to be gone.
Great move for the Sixers though. If they can secure Iguodala's services with an extension, they could make a formidable duo.
Wed Jul 09, 2008 1:42 pm
True. Didn't see that.
The old Philadelphia was Iverson and another guy that can help him scoring some balls. Now it's a completely different team with two main guys and good players also.

If I was a Clippers fan I'd feel like I'd just been Boozer'ed. Brand making those comments about how he was willing to stay with the Clippers if they acquired that extra piece (which they did) all seemed to go down the drain after this signing.
Things just don't go right for this franchise do they?
Wed Jul 09, 2008 2:29 pm
I think we're meant to assume that any comments like that these days come with an asterisk that says "unless something better comes along".
Wed Jul 09, 2008 2:32 pm
But Brand seemed like the kind of class act who would follow through on that kind of decision. I guess being below .500 season after season really takes it toll on even the nicest guys in the NBA.
Wed Jul 09, 2008 2:35 pm
Then I guess the key word is "willing" rather than "will".
Wed Jul 09, 2008 3:27 pm
I wonder how Clipper fans will greet Brand when Philly plays in LA.
Not too good I'm thinking...
Wed Jul 09, 2008 3:31 pm
I think Brand, as much of a team player as he is, was a little mad that the clippers used more money on baron davis rather then himself, whose been attempting to lead them to the playoffs all these years.
Dalembert, Brand, Young. That's a goooooood front court.
Wed Jul 09, 2008 3:43 pm
Karma's a bitch, Baron Davis....
Baron Davis made comments on Bay Area's news and though he indirectly answered the question on whether or not he's signing with the Clippers, it seemed pretty sure he was leaving the Bay as he answered by thanking the Warriors organization and fans for taking him in as a injured and controversial player. Now that Brand is supposedly leaving and it doesn't seem Maggette is coming back, it looks like BD is stuck with Caveman.
But since it's not official yet, I still hope BD comes back to the Warriors and we can forget this Maggette business.
