Damn; Philly pulled it off. Iguodala missed a couple clutch FT's, but made up for it in the end. Still standing by Pistons in 5 though. (go Detroit!)

Wow. Lets see how strong will be this team on his home games, this serie seem to be more interesting than what we all thought at the begining of this thread-.

Detroit came up short..first opener upset in the Playoff..nice performance in the second half by Sixers (props to Iguodala for the near triple double)..the Pistons starters are not getting the job done this lost should be a wake up call for them..don't let it slip yet..

If I recall correctly, around 70% of Game 1 winners have gone on to win the series so the Sixers must be hoping that history will be on their side. Maybe the series will go six games with Philadelphia taking another one on their home court but it's too early to be talking an upset. Mind you, if that's the way it goes down kudos to anyone who goes out on a limb and calls it now, or called it before the series began.

Andrew in my opinion the 70% happens because the teams who starts the series has court advantage for having a better W/L % -. This isnt the case for the 76ers...anyway i hope the can beat the f**cking pistons
Mon Apr 21, 2008 12:39 pm
The sixers took Game 1!
If they can do a decent work at the wachovia center, I think they have the series in the pocket.

That's true for a lot of series but it doesn't account for teams splitting the first two games, nor teams that win the first game and the series despite not having the home court advantage. I would suggest that winning the first game would grant a certain psychological advantage since winning the series only requires three more victories while the opponent must win four, making the victor in Game 1 closer to the ultimate goal (albeit only marginally).
If nothing else, winning the first game gives a team the opportunity to go on the road up 2-0, at least get a split and then have an opportunity to finish the series at home in Game 5 if necessary, sweep in the bast case scenario or in the worst case scenario, have three chances to win one game after going up 3-1. Or, in the case of the Sixers, they can go home up 2-0 in the best case scenario or go home with the split with the opportunity to go up 3-1 having claimed home court advantage in the series, which would give them three chances to win their fourth game.
Of course, a strong team like the Pistons could potentially win four straight or four out of five to win the series in six, which I'd say accounts for the other 30%.

i would say that the main reason for that percentage is the better team usually starts the series at home. here is a request for benji, take out all the 1v8,2v7, and 3v6 first round matchups, now what is the % for first game winners in winning the series.
Mon Apr 21, 2008 12:48 pm
If I had to hazard a guess, I'd say 4/5 matchups have a lower percentage but still favour Game 1 winners going on to take the series.
Mon Apr 21, 2008 7:21 pm
isn't the % 83?!?!?
anyways, tough loss but I expected Philly to play tough. Pistons should still be able pull this off in 5 but every game will come down to the last few mins.
Interesting note, with the 4 vs 5 seed, i believe the 5 seed has progressed more than the 4th.

Could be, though that number might refer to the first round while the 70% refers to all playoff series.

Woah, didn't see that coming.. Great debut for the Sixers.

I told you they weren't going down without a fight. I thought I was dying when Evans made 2 FTs, Chauncey missed two and then Evans with the turnaround jumper. It's bizarro world as they say
Tue Apr 22, 2008 5:09 am
^Yeah when Evans threw up that wild turnaround J from pretty long range I almost choked. I still can't believe he hit that one.
Wed Apr 23, 2008 6:27 am
Indeed around 70% of game 1 winners have gone on to win the series, but Detroit is a has more experience and she will win in a series.

She? Might be spam, but

Pistons up 19 at the half. They would need to blow it even worse to lose this one.
Thu Apr 24, 2008 9:25 pm
This column suggests that losses like the Game 1 are the result of the Pistons making the games tougher for themselves so they can draw strength and inspiration from having their backs to the wall. With the Sixers going home with the split, picking up a win in Phiadelphia doesn't seem out of the question but it would be surprising if the Pistons let the series go to seven games.
Fri Apr 25, 2008 12:50 pm
Going 1-1 to Philly is a lot better than anybody predicted. I still think the Pistons advance in 6, but I want to see how's the effort, and how much money will Iggy earn/lose in this series.
Sat Apr 26, 2008 4:26 am
Right now he looks like he's gonna lose lots of money.
Sat Apr 26, 2008 11:50 am
Philly up 2-1 now, winning by 20 (!)
Whats up Detroit? Is this a fluke, or is it GSW 2? Either way, so much for Detroit in 5.
Sat Apr 26, 2008 12:06 pm
They just lost focus. No, wait, they underrated the Sixers. Maybe it was Flip, yeah I bet it was all Flip
My prediction's still alive. I hope it changes by Sunday,
Sat Apr 26, 2008 9:56 pm
My prediction is still alive as well.
I have a feeling this might actually turn out as another first round upset.
..then again, you can't go wrong with the Pistons in the playoffs.
Sun Apr 27, 2008 11:30 pm
Sixers' 2-1 lead is all about Samuel Dalembert being productive for a change. Who the heck is guarding Sammy D anyway? Sheed could easily guard him.
