Grizzlies Head Coach Marc Iavaroni

Thursday afternoon, the Grizzlies made it official that they had hired Phoenix Suns assistant coach Marc Iavaroni as their head coach. A Suns assistant for the past five seasons, Iavaroni has been a hot prospect to become an NBA head coach for the past two off-seasons. Three years ago, he was virtually a lock (or so it was reported) to become the head coach in Portland, only to see Nate McMillan make the short trip down Interstate 5 from Seattle to Portland.

The Grizzlies – along with almost every other team with an opening – no doubt targeted Iavaroni for at least two reasons: first, he has a tremendous and well-deserved reputation for developing big-man talent (think Amare Stoudemire) and has been on the coaching staff of one of the most exciting teams in today’s NBA.

What style of basketball he will install with the Grizzlies was a prime topic of conversation. While Iavaroni was one of the ringmasters of the Suns’ offensive circus, his first two NBA bosses were the defensively-minded Pat Riley and Mike Fratello. Iavaroni is one of the best-prepared coaches in the NBA. A video junkie, Iavaroni will watch tape virtually around the clock, looking for the tiniest advantage to exploit.

Iavaroni also has the ability to effectively communicate with players, alternating between constructive criticism and praise. It’s a communication style that is essential for success in today’s NBA. During Thursday’s media sesson, he stressed positive communication, good listening skills and a commitment to team goals in his interaction with players.

So with apprenticeships on both sides of basketball’s philosophical coin, where does that leave Iavaroni?

Not unexpectedly, probably somewhere in the middle. Iavaroni emphasized the need for the Grizzlies to be versatile, doing whatever it takes to “make the opponent uncomfortable.” He stressed an “attacking” offense, noting that the Grizzlies will run, “not like Phoenix, but in our own way.” Last season the Grizzlies proved that they could score the ball in volume. What the Grizzlies absolutely, positively could not do was defend.

Grizzlies Front Office

Scouting
Mar. 25, 2008 - Tuesday morning

6:00AM Jerry West's residence, Memphis

Jery West was much calmer after finishing last trades of the season and signing with Iavaroni as the new head coach. Problem with cap room for next year was solved, the only thing West was thinking now was the draft. Which selection will they get, who to pick. West has also signed with Stephen Sakara - scout. He was sent on rookie scouting 3 weeks ago.

[radio]"GOOD MORNING PEOPLE, we are live from Radio Memphis. It's 6:00AM, we have a beautifull day infront of us, it looks like it will be sunny all day. Great day to do something good"[radio]

"Yeah, sure" said West outloud. He was already woken up.
"What is that honey?" said West's wife who was still half asleep.
"Nothing pretty, you just sleep" said West and kissed her on forhead as he rose up from the bed.

After 20 minutes of morning's stuff and preparing a breakfast he went into his home office and turned on his laptop. He had 1 new message...

"Finally some results from Stephen, it was about time" said West while he was just about to click on the message.

From: Stephen Sakara
Subject: Rookies

Hi there Jerry! It's crazy here man. So many talents, scouts, reporters I mean crazy. I was at Tennessee, UNLV, Alabama, Utah, Connecticut. I was even in Netherlands, Uruguay and Lithuania. We are so fortunat this year, because the draft projection is VERY STRONG. There is about 40 rookies that can easily be top10 pick, it's really amazing how many international young guys are out there. I did my best to evaluate the players. Check the list.

note: they aren't in any kind of order, they are random.

Ivory Duncan(SF) - 6'7",190lbs - 19yrs - still in phase of development but he can be the next T.Prince type of a player. grade: C-
(Birth - Dallas, TX)
Edward Gill(SG) - 6'2",213lbs - 22yrs - very fast, athletic but undersized for his position. grade: B+
(Birth - Colorado Spr, CO)
Jamaal William(C) - 7'0",289lbs - 21yrs - good blocker,poor rebounder. grade: C
(Birth - Linden, AL)
Anthony O'Shea(SG) - 6'6",217lbs - 21yrs - great shooter(fg,3pt).Imppressive defensive ability, can defend anyone(quick legs)One of the best shooting guards on draft. grade: A
(Birth - Forth Worth, TX)
Cristiano da Silva(PF) - 6'7",217lbs - 22yrs - although he's pretty undersized, he's one of top 3 projected rookies. He's a vicous dunker and a crazy blocker. (Birth - San Pedro, Dom. Rep.) He can also jump high very good rebounder grade: A+
Nuno Medina(PF) - 6'9",225lbs - 24yrs - Also top3 projected rookie. Decent fg and 3pt shooter. Great rebounder, avarage blocker, avarage dunker. grade: A-
(Birth - Montevideo, Uruguay)
Desmond Chuck(SF) - 6'4",192lbs - 20yrs - Great fg and 3pt shooter. Can't easily dunk. Very quick player. Maybee of the most undersized player for his position. grade: B+
(Birth - Vlaardingen, Netherlands)
Quentin Armstrong(C) - 7'1",262lbs - 22yrs - Big man with fine touch around the paint. Mad blocker, decent dunker and rebounder. grade: B-
(Birth - Pitman, NJ)
Haleem Scot(PF) - 6'8",247lbs - 23yrs - He's the best 3pt shooters among PF rookies. Good dunker and crazy blocker with good rebounding skills. grade: A
(Birth - Concord, NH)
Giovani Fernandez(PG) - 5'11,212lbs - 20 - Good 3pt shooter. Very quick. grade: C+
(Birth - Port-au-Prince, Haiti)

Can you please send this list to Marc because I don't have time right now, I have a flight to catch. It is up to you guys to decide which rookies you gonna bring-up to practice and eventually pick. My vote goes to C.da Silva, he's great prospect, although he's small. Anyways, see you soon.

Greetings, Stephen.

Jerry West immidietly picked up the phone and called Marc Iavaroni...

"Hello?"
"Hello Marc, did I wake you up?"
"Hi Jerry and no you didn't. I'm an early morning guy, like you"
"Nice to hear. Anyway, Stephen has sent me his scouting results"
"Really? Finaly, I was afraid he was lost when he went to Uruguay" said Iavaroni and laughed.
"Poor Stephen, he went through alot there, with being robbed and everything"
"Yes I know, but it was funny..little." added Iavaroni.
"I'm just about to send you the list that Stephen gave me."
"Sure, no problem. I'll immidietly start working on this, I will make the calls for meetings and practices."
"Yes, that would be perfect. See you later at FedExForum rigtht?
"Afcourse, I'll be there around 10:00AM"
"Alright, good bye Marc"
"Bye Jerry"

Great dynasty here. I actually prefer the Dominican dandy, Cristiano da Silva, among those prospects up there. If only he were 6'9 or 6'10, he'd probably be a shoe-in for the number one pick. 6'7, 217 sound like small forward measures to me.

Will be following this.

A really nice dynasty man. I would look for O'Shea, da Silva and Scot. Is E. Gill like a point guard ? Maybe he could play the point too ? Anyways, very nice and promising, I will follow as much as I can.

Wow! Detroit won in five games over the Spurs... And also saw that Kobe was only second team All-NBA, his numbers probably went down with the Gasol trade.

Anyways, with your team’s record you have a pretty good chance to get the No.1 pick of the draft, Good Luck in the lottery! (Y)

Nice recap. It's very similar to Lamrock's though..
Haleem Scot is my fave. A 3-point shooting big man is something teams strive to have.

Good luck with the offseason.

No don't do that. I'm not even angry. I'm just saying that you could have at least tried to make it a little different. Its a perfect copy of it, minus the little paragraph summaries. Right down to the months in quotes and playoff presentation. In the future just try to not copy someone else's recaps exactly.

the thing is that this isn't so important(summary). You had the greatest summary by far....and I didn't want to lose my thrust with writing and making new summary....i'll work something out

p.s. i have so much work with rookie draft/inside stories/free agency. And to copy your "summary" made my work much easier. And like you've said....it is ridicolus to do off-season for a month...i'm planning to finish all this to sunday/monday. Then 09 begins(the season)

After incredible 07/08 season for rookies like Durant who won the R.O.Y. award or Scola who helped his Rockets to the playoffs. Also Horford almost double-doubling through out the season. Many rookies had big impact on their teams. Will it be the same in 08/09 season? Experts are saying yes, even better are comming in upcomming season. So this night was very important for many teams as who will pick when is going to be decided. Most chances(25%) were for Memhpis but they've landed on 4th place. First pick went to Milwaukee who had second best odds. Biggest jump was by New Orleans, they had only 4.3% chance to win the lottery and they've landed on 2nd place. Also Philadelphia jumped on 3rd place with only 8.8% to win the entire thing. Many good rookies are in store, just have to pick the right one. It will definetly show who invested money in scouting and who didn't.

Draft Lottery Results

1. Milwaukee Bucks [19.9%]
2. New Orleans Hornets [4.3%]
3. Philadelphia Sixers [8.8%]
4. Memphis Grizzlies [25%]
5. Minnesota Timberwolves [11.9%]
6. Charlotte Bobcats [15.6%]
7. New York Knicks [6.3%]
8. Toronto Raptors [2.8%]
9. Portland Trail Blazers [1.7%]
10. Chicago Bulls [1.1%]
11. Los Angeles Clippers [0.8%]
12. Seatle Supersonics(LAC) [0.7%]
13. Washington Wizards [0.6%]
14. Sacramento Kings [0.5%]

Tough luck in the lottery. It seems like every time someone has the 25% odds in Live, they get the fourth pick. Hope you get someone good.

You should look for a PF, or a SG. Is Edward Gill an Allen Iverson style player ? Like 1.5 position player ? It would be cool for you to have a scoring guard along with a young franchise player Rudy. Would be like AI and Iggy. ;D Though, you already have Mike Conley, so maybe the 6'6" SG or the 3pt shooting PF. No need for C though, since you have Kwame and Darko, but you should put Kwame starting over Darko imo.

Yeah, always when i have the best chances, I'll end up in the 4th seed.

Am i right, that you won't resign Kwame? In that case, you'll need a center to back up Darko.

Best of luck!

Whoa, Milwaukee got the #1 pick again!
Anyway, it's alright.. you can probably get someone good at #4 ;)
Look at a few past #4's from the last 5 years..
Mike Conley, Tyrus Thomas, Chris Paul, Shaun Livingston. Chris Bosh..
2/5 of those guys are superstars, good luck!
