Charlton Heston dies aged 84

Sun Apr 06, 2008 7:41 pm

Actor Charlton Heston dead at 84

Not being a huge classic film buff I haven't seen a lot of his most famous movies, at least not all the way through, so for me he was one of those old actors whose work I knew of but wasn't really familiar with. The only one I can really remember watching was the 1950 adapation of Shakespeare's Julius Caesar in English class, mainly to contrast it to the 1953 adapation starring Marlon Brando. Beyond that, I'm probably more familiar with the depictions of him in pop culture lampooning his stance on guns and membership in the NRA.

Saw him in the original Planet of the Apes.

Damn you, damn you all to hell!

R.I.P.

Yes, one of the greatest line in movie history.

"You maniacs! You blew it up! Ah, damn you! God damn you all to hell!"

Definitely one of my favourites of All-Time.

RIP Charlton

Very sad news indeed. A great innings, but he will be missed.

Not a big loss as far as I'm concerned, obviously some great acting roles, but I can't get past the NRA bullshit. Not gonna feel bad for someone who advocated and glorified the use of weapons.

R.I.P. Mr. Heston. What's sorta ironic is that for English, my class happened to watch Bowling For Columbine this week.

Hah, that's what my gf said too last night when I asked who he was. Reading in this thread to see that he's one of the NRA guys, all I can say is that I'm sure some people will miss him.

My bad; yeah, the correct word was concidence, not ironic.

I'm not a big fan of Heston's stance but I think you yourself will want a weapon to blow someone's head off when that someone is in your house posing a considerable threat to you and your love ones (which I hope never happens), I know I would want one.

Besides, weapons don't kill people. People kill people.

 crazy video.

Yeah, but if you start basing everything you do on what might possibly happen, you might as well live constantly with a helmet and bulletproof vest, or isolate yourself from anything or anyone else. That's how all propagandas start, "you gotta be afraid"...

great actor, great legacy

RIP Heston (Y)

I guess "from my cold, dead hands" applies now(?) either way, I lightly supported his late-age NRA stances.

That is amazing.

The "right to bear arms" to protect yourself from the state doesn't mean you're "required to bear arms."

When law abiding citizens can't have guns, only criminals have them.

The "right to bear arms" to protect yourself from the state doesn't mean you're "required to bear arms."

I understand that, and that's fine, but I still completely disagree with the concept.

Tue Apr 08, 2008 2:31 am

me too, i rather yell at people with guns, it works better

I still completely disagree with the concept.

I understand that, and that's fine, but humans are humans.

1. RIP Charlton Heston. Planet of the Apes is still better than The Ten Commandments (maybe not Ben Hur).
2. As crazy as the guy was about his stance perhaps, whether or not you agree with him, at least he wasnt a wishy washy prick like everyone seems to be nowadays. I dont agree that guns are a right, but i do think self defense is one so *shrug* whatever floats peoples boats i guess
See even I can't pick a side on this

Tue Apr 08, 2008 3:00 am

So, you're allowed to defend yourself with melee weapons only? While criminals and the state get guns?

Tue Apr 08, 2008 3:06 am

Thats not what I said. People act like guns are an absolute right. If you've fucked up and broken the law greater than lets say jaywalking or drunk in public..Attempted murder, robbery, rape etc. you officially forfeit your right to a gun. I know its probly media portrayal but some of the people that pass background checks never should. I'm not saying take guns away, i'm saying perhaps screen a little better than we currently do.

Tue Apr 08, 2008 3:08 am

That's different from not agreeing guns are a right, which you originally said. Despite what you said to start that post.

Tue Apr 08, 2008 4:19 am

Let's ban knives too. Those things are deadly, and can be thrown with great velocity.

Tue Apr 08, 2008 5:16 am

Ah, sarcasm from gun aficionados, always priceless.

Tue Apr 08, 2008 5:20 am

So do you have any of the typical things that go along with opinions? Like reasons/evidence? Or is it just that guns are bad?

I do like that if I support the Second Amendment I become a gun aficionado, despite never having fired one or seen one fired.

Tue Apr 08, 2008 5:34 am

I've learnt a long time that bringing up any reasons about this kind of topic is utterly useless with people like you. Keep enjoying your 2nd amendment, you're one of the good guys. (Y)
