Best Basketball Movies?

Wed Mar 12, 2008 7:50 am

I was watching The Score a few nights ago, and the topic about the greatest basketball movie came up. So, I made this to find out your opinions. Which do you think is the best? And why?
Personally, I like Coach Carter, because it's based on a true story. Most basketball movies I've seen are totally made up..

EDIT: There's a lot of great basketball movies, so I changed the title.

I have to admit, I'm partial to the more comedic ones like White Men Can't Jump, Blue Chips and Celtic Pride.

Semi-pro ...one word...ferrel

& He got game....one word...denzel

...one of the worst...the one with jordan and the cartoon characters...two words...bad acting

By far, He Got Game. It's about much more than just basketball and that's what makes it a great movie. And, as Yohance said, it stars one of the best actors of the past two decades.

I really liked Hoosiers (Dennis Hopper, Gene Hackman) and would rank it second, with Glory Road coming in third.

Havent seen Semi Pro yet but as of right now White Men Can't Jump is by far the best to me with Celtic Pride being the only other basketball movie I like.

WMCJ had such a big influence on me and my friends when playing pick up games, the shit talking made it a lot more fun.

Mostly dumb, but some funny parts.

I guess the basic point is, there's never been a good basketball movie. (And really, has there even been a good sports movie?)

Well played, Buena Vista Pictures...well played.

Irresistible!

But AMAZING writing:
Shawn Bradley: I've got other skills... I could go back and work on the farm... or maybe I could go back to the jungle and be a missionary again...

Daffy: How's this for a new team name: The Ducks!
Bugs: Please! What kind of Mickey Mouse orginization would name their team The Ducks?

Muggsy Bogues: What are you saying? That I'm trying to disobey my mama?
Psychiatrist: I didn't say that. You did, Muggsy.
Muggsy Bogues: But I love my mama.

Stan Podalak: C'mon, Michael, it's game time. Slip on your Hanes, lace up your Nikes, take your Wheaties and your Gatorade, and we'll grab a Big Mac on the way to the ballpark.

Player: That was a strike-out, Mike. But that was a good-looking strike-out. Real good.
Player: I mean, you look good when you strike out, man. When I strike out, it looks nasty, man. But at least you look good, man.

[Bill Murray enters the court as a substitution]
Mr. Swackhammer: Whoa, whoa, whoa! I didn't know Dan Aykroyd was in this picture!

It's Space Jam. Show some respect.

It's all about Teen Wolf.

Wed Mar 12, 2008 4:15 pm

Blue Chips, The Air Up There, Hoop Dreams all run in just behind White Men Can't Jump.

Wed Mar 12, 2008 10:03 pm

White Men Can't Jump is my favourite by far, right behind He Got Game.
I found movies like Celtic Pride and Like Mike very boring, I rather watch Space Jam than those.

Wed Mar 12, 2008 11:45 pm

When I think about it, most of the basketball movies made have been pretty good.
He Got Game ranks up there. Ray Allen ain't a bad actor too ;)

Damn, benji beat me with Airbud...It's saying it's "irresistible", I'll take their word for it.
I remember seeing "White Men Can't Jump" at the theater, I was pretty impressed by then. It'd probably suck ass if I watched it again now.

Thu Mar 13, 2008 2:49 am

one of my favorite basketball movies is rebound, and not that gay martin lawrence once, i mean the one about the "goat"

Thu Mar 13, 2008 3:14 am

Coach Carter for sure, like told above, it is based on a true story, all this real stuff, it teaches you and stuff, so that's where my vote goes, I just love this movie.

He got game, a really nice movie, although it gets boring after watching the second time.

Juwanna Mann.

Thread over.

Thu Mar 13, 2008 6:43 am

White men cant jump is the best. Debate is over. :D

Notice The 6th Man has recieved the same praise, but is also "Fun!"

I thought I'd be the only one to mention Celtic Pride. It certainly wasn't a critical success.

White Men Can't Jump

Glory Road
He Got Game

Two other candidates for worst BBall movies ever..

Like mike...two words...bow wow.....and Allen Iverson's query as to "How he do dat?"...a question that has plagued man kind since the beginning of the NBA

Like mike 2....six wordds...the dude from keenan and kel

For shame! :scold:

Actually, I can understand how not everyone would be a fan; as I said, it wasn't critically acclaimed. Still, I enjoyed the satire of diehard fans who obsess over superstitions like the seat they are sitting inm truly believing it to have an effect on the outcome.
