Wow, the Heat must really want Beasley to play for them.
But my guess is, if they finish with below 15 wins, the #1 pick is almost a lock.
And if it goes to a team like Seattle or Minnesota, they'll likely go after Derrick Rose.
But if goes to Memphis or New York, that's the end for the Beasley dream in Miami.
Wed Mar 12, 2008 9:40 am
Not necessarily. Whether they finish with 15 wins, 13 wins or 17 wins, as long as they have the worst record in the league they'll have a 25% chance of winning the top pick with the NBA's lottery system.
Thu Mar 13, 2008 12:03 am
True. But doesn't it give the other teams less chances to get the top pick?
For eg. Philadelphia won the draft lottery in 1973 after having a 9-73 record.
Toronto won the draft lottery in 2006, but there were other teams with worse records.
Thu Mar 13, 2008 3:41 am
That's the point. Having the worst record doesn't mean the #1 pick is a lock.

No, they didn't. There was no draft lottery then. The last place team gets 25% of the balls, no matter what.

It gives everyone less of a chance, but only because fewer wins will keep them in last place. As I said, whether they're last with 13 wins, 15 wins or 17 wins, they'll have the best odds so their final record doesn't matter as long as it's the worst in the league.
Of course, the Raptors getting the first pick in 2006 and the Blazers getting the first pick last year are good examples of the best odds not paying off.

The Heat just have outdone themselves again, losing to Toronto 96-54
I just searched around, the lowest score by one team is 49 by Chicago against Miami, in the 1999 lockout season.
Thu Mar 20, 2008 3:33 pm
I haven't actually watched the game, so I didn't believe it as something caught my eye as I was watching Sportsnet news. You want Beasley, you don't have to lose by record setting margins, do you? 82 one-point losses will suffice.
Miami gives tanking a whole new meaning.
Thu Mar 20, 2008 3:37 pm
Is tanking the same as fielding a terrible team?
Thu Mar 20, 2008 3:43 pm
No, but are they that horrible to lose by that much if everyone gave in 100%? I don't think so. Even the Heat can keep it a bit closer if they wanted to. As much a Raptors fan I am, it's not like Toronto are world-beaters.
Then again, it's just my opinion that they're tanking.
Thu Mar 20, 2008 3:56 pm
But who cares? Why are we suddenly so caring about the latest buzzword: "tanking"?
If the Heat's season is over and if their guys fall behind a ton in the first half, can't get back in the third and decide to give up, why do we have to whine about it and accuse them of something with malicious connotations in current dialogue?
The Raptors certainly didn't give 100%, Rasho led the team with 31 minutes. Heat had five guys play at least that much or more. Chris Quinn played the entire game.

Exactly. Even if the Heat aren't too concerned about winning a lot of games at this point of the season, I doubt their intent was to be thoroughly embarrassed and score only 54 points.
Fri Mar 21, 2008 11:55 am
OK, I watched this game and COME ON!
Just because there's no D-Wade, the Heat only score 54!?!
Wow, I'm now officially joining the Beasley bandwagon.
Fri Mar 21, 2008 12:24 pm
Why only 7 players played that game?
Fri Mar 21, 2008 12:25 pm
because all the other players on the team are remotely decent.

Banks, Haslem, Johnson, Marion and Williams all have injuries that are at least keeping them "day-to-day"; I believe Haslem is all but officially done for the season.

Yeah, he is! so sad!:(
but next season gonna be MUCH better for the team! we defenitelly gonna get a VERY GOOD rookie!

The lottery is never a sure thing and even though the odds are slim, the team with the highest odds to get no. 1 overall can slip down all the way to the last lottery pick.
So I'll wait with baited breath and not drool over the possibility of getting Beasley too much.

guys, just saw -second round #18 - Anton Ponkrashov, Russia player! wow! he is good at SG and he can play pg with 6'8"

Not true. The lowest the highest odds team can fall is 4th.

If you post video clips of him and be proud of how your country has hearth, then that is the only time we'll believe you.

Haslem has
undergone surgery, so he's now officially out for the remainder of the season along with Wade, Mourning and Wright. Fox Sports Australia is showing the Pistons/Heat game next Friday, I can't imagine it will be a pretty sight.

To prevent "Do you think that the miami heat has the perfect team?" thread from having more lives, I'm using this secret card.

Great game once again, beating the Celtics! Moon is playing really well. Thank you, Toronto! What the heck is wrong with Marbury though? 0 points as a starter? No wonder, he refused to play in NYK this season.
