Decisions

Fri Feb 29, 2008 10:00 am

What do you think that have been the worst GM decisions in recent NBA history??

Maybe the hawks not drafting paul, or williams, or felton in 2005
The bulls signing wallace, probably
San antonio trading away scola... maybe (N)

Fri Feb 29, 2008 12:08 pm

I don't know if it still qualifies as recent, but the Bulls trade of Elton Brand for Tyson Chandler was one of the worst all time moves. Boneheaded Jerry Krause at his best (worst?)

You could also point to any of the Knicks recent moves.

Billy Knight blunders.

Sat Mar 01, 2008 8:21 am

Vince Carter for Eric Williams, Aaron Williams and Alonzo Mourning (didn't even play a damn game in Toronto)
The Raptors not drafting Kobe Bryant
The Pistons drafting Darko Milicic
The Wizards drafting Kwame Brown
and the first 29 teams who passed on Gilbert Arenas.

Not even close

Had to be done, he forced it.

- Darko pick
- Kwame pick
- Kwame trade (for butler)
- Kwame trade (for gasol)
- Hawks passing on Deron, and more importantly Paul
- Bulls signing Ben Wallace
- Bulls trading for Larry Hughes
- Anything to do with Tyson Chandler (trading for Brand, then trading for SFA)

The Bulls have made plenty, starting with Scottie Pippen for Roy Rogers and a second round draft pick. I know, Pip was a free agent and it was all about giving him his payday and moving him on to a team that would still be contending for a title, but it makes you wonder if Krause even tried to get anything more out of the Rockets. Then of course, trading Brand for Chandler and following it up with acquiring Jalen Rose in exchange for Brad Miller and Ron Artest. John Paxson had been doing a fairly solid job up until he traded Aldridge for Thomas and signed Ben Wallace.

Kwame being picked first overall is definitely up there. Olowokandi going first overall is still within the last decade so if that qualifies as recent I'd include that as well. Michael Redd going to the Bucks in the second round in 2000 was, in retrospect, a huge oversight by the rest of the league. I'd agree with the Hawks bypassing Paul and Williams, too.

The Nuggets signing Kenyon Martin to a ridiculous contract, then doing the same thing for Nene.

Sat Mar 01, 2008 12:16 pm

In the Nuggets defence, Kenyon has been injured. Now he is coming back, he is playing pretty good.

Nothing can defend the Nene contract though... sure, he has been injured too, but at least Martin had previously shown he could play.

The Dalembert contract can also be put up there.

Bucks trade Dirk Nowitzki for Robert Traylor. :x

Sun Mar 02, 2008 8:22 am

i am gonna have to say the entire darko thing is tops in recent years when it comes to "what the fuck are they thinking" moments

Sun Mar 02, 2008 10:07 am

The Darko defense has always been that it didn't prevent them from winning the championship or remaining one of the top teams in the East every year since, which I still think is a poor reflection on the player when that's the most positive thing you can say about him being selected second overall and is a stark contrast to the original line of him having all this potential and becoming a beast down the road, the Pistons' secret weapon in three or four years time. The fact they traded him away indicates they stopped believing that.

I guess you could compare it to the Bulls drafting Stacey King in 1989, a selection that still looks weak even in a Draft that only produced a handful of players who were stars at some point, which ultimately didn't make or break the franchise but is still a difficult decision to defend given that a much better player could have been picked instead.

John Weisbrod.

well..this is the best move for dallas in their history though...in my opinion..

Sun Mar 02, 2008 11:07 am

-Wolves drafting William Avery in first round over talent like Ron Artest and Andrei Kirilenko
-Wolves letting Billups go because they believed in Brandon's health (which was gone)
-Wolves firing Flip

Sun Mar 02, 2008 11:10 am

Trading Rasheed Wallace and Wesley Person for heo Ratliff, Shareef Abdur-Rahim and Dan Dickau was another retarded Hawks move.

Sun Mar 02, 2008 2:54 pm

Shaquille O'Neal for Shawn Marion + Marcus Banks is looking dumber by the day.

They're getting crushed while he's healthy... I can only imagine how bad the Suns will be in the 50% of the time that he's unhealthy.

Bryant for Divac was pretty bad.

That was an arrangement between the Hornets and Lakers though, since the Lakers didn't want to risk Kobe getting drafted before their pick in the 20s (which I believe turned out to be Derek Fisher). Obviously, given the player Kobe has become declining the arrangement and keeping him themselves would have been a far better decision. I guess it depends whether the Hornets would have picked him - and held onto him - if that arrangement wasn't in place. If not, the decision could have been much worse in retrospect.

This one might not have been a bad decision if it actually happened, especially in comparison to the moves that have already been posted, but Billy Knight's supposed desire to fire Mike Woodson after the team traded for Mike Bibby strikes me as being somewhat oddly timed given that acquiring Bibby seems like a good move and the Hawks are doing much better this year and have a shot at making the Playoffs. It wouldn't have gone down as one of the biggest blunders in NBA history but it seems an odd desire, one that would be more fitting if the Hawks were blowing everything up and had shown no improvement.

Mon Mar 03, 2008 11:41 am

why the heck would you wanna do that, the hawks are having there best season in yonks

Mon Mar 03, 2008 1:19 pm

any move made by babcock

Eeeh...they're what, nine games below .500 in the EAST? And it's not like they don't have any talent...Josh Smith, Joe Johnson, Marvin Williams, Horford, Childress...young, but talented. They should be disappointed in their record.

As far as bad moves go...Riot once traded Kevin Garnett for Tariq Abdul-Wahad in a sim league. WOW.

They're also right there in the Playoff picture despite their record, which while unimpressive is sufficient given the landscape of the Eastern Conference this season. Their record thus far has been an improvement on last year so while their performance may be disappointing by traditional standards, they are having one of their best seasons in recent times. Getting Mike Bibby for a couple of journeymen and a player who may or may not be anything special was hardly a terrible move either.

It's not that they're having a stellar season, it's just that the timing is odd. I'd have expected it last season or if they weren't showing any kind of improvement or Playoff promise this year but as I said, the timing strikes me as odd given that Atlanta is having its best season in a while, even if in the grand scheme of things it's not that impressive or on some level disappointing.

That's a lie. It looked really bad because that's all the trade thing said but there was more to the deal than that, playa. You know it.
