Shaq is garbage now.Not wise for Suns.

Thu Feb 07, 2008 4:44 am

lol thats funny, the replay game is pointless, the heat want to lose it now anyway. this is a tank season for them by this point

I didn't say it was a good plan, just that the Suns are obsessed with the Spurs.
Think of another Lakers/Suns playoff series. I would have to get tickets to that.

Darko no, I hope with all my might such a series does not come to pass. We still hear far too much about Kobe and Shaq, I don't need to hear a month of "KOBE VS. SHAQ OMGEE LET'S SETTLE IT FOR GOODS".
maybe i am wrong but if it is then maybe the suns are worried he will just walk anyway.

The Suns weren't worried about that, they simply don't want to resign him.

The Suns didn't want Marion...they're obsessed with the Spurs...they're concerned about Nash aging...
Shaq might come off the bench and play only when they need him to

Aha! Someone with some sense!

Thu Feb 07, 2008 4:55 am

wow that's a great question!!

Thu Feb 07, 2008 5:56 am

I honestly thought I'd wake up today and this story would lose steam but reality has proven otherwise. Wow...just wow.

I honestly feel this is just a case of premature ejaculation on the part of Steve Kerr. Even if you have lost faith in the run and gun offense as a title winner it still doesnt make much sense to make this deal and you can get much better value for Marion. Seriously, if you wanted a center and were willing to offer Marion then its crazy why they wouldnt have pushed for Gasol instead who is younger, a good passer, effective in the high post especially with his J, and can actually run up and down the court twice without gasping for his life. I mean, theyll have to slow down their pace drastically to work with Oneal and if not then its somewhat crazy to believe he can work his way into shape and not be a cancer to their system. He never ran the floor often years ago in LA and I highly doubt that will be happening now.

Even a disgruntled Marion is more productive than Shaq and it would probably be much better for them to have him contribute for the next few months then walk than have Shaq in the squad getting 40 m over the next two years. They played well against San Antonio last season and if history is an indicator San Antonio wont be winning any repeat title this season so its not like they are that far off. I can understand you want a big body to guard the giants of the western conference but really if the Shaq deal is only for defensive purposes and his defensive abilities arent far and above any other above average defensive big out there who makes way less then Steve Kerr is quite the crazy dude. Seriously, trade Diaw or somebody... work out something for Chris Kamen, the Clips arent really playing for anything. You'd have to be quite the optimist to not see that great a risk in having 2/5th of your starting lineup comprising of Shaq and Grant Hill who both are about 50/50 to break down before they start playing any meaninful playoff games. Its saddening to think that the window of opportunity to view Steve Nash leading that offense in the manner he has for the past few years slowly wind down and switch to God knows what as a result of this deal. Wow, how many alley-oops at the end of fast breaks are they losing in this deal?

It's funny that we were discussing (link below) the Heat & how more or less everybody except me said the Heat deal for Shaq was worth sacrificing the future for the Title.

http://www.nbaliveforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=54128

Based on this trade, it was worth it for the Heat as they get the Title, and then are back on track 2 years later. I had to change my mind as I naturally thought nobody would ever trade for a quickly declining Shaq at $20 mill per year....I was wrong....

good on Heat though for making the deal....

as for Suns, if it gives them a better chance to win the title this season, it is more or less no different than the dice that the Heat rolled a few years back....obviously Shaq isn't as dominant, but Suns are gambling just like the Heat did, but at least they have better supporting cast....

naturally I'm against the trade, as I've said previously & I continue to say, that I don't like teams gambling & changing what was good about them for one or two chances for the Title....

Thu Feb 07, 2008 6:53 am

I dont see this trade being such a bad thing. I mean you would have 2 guys in your front court how would demand a double team and with the suns 3 point shooting it would still be almost impossible to stop the suns offensively. The whole idea of defensively shaq would hurt them is something I can't see happening either cause defensively is known that they aren't very good so he can only help in that department.

And could people please stop comparing shaq to marion. I know its natural to do that since they getting traded for each other but if the suns wanted someone back like marion why wouldnt they just keep marion then? You won't get a marion back if you trade him he is a unique player (with a unique shot) and just does so much on the floor that there aren't many players that can do what he does. I believe this could work for the suns cause the two-time MVP Steve Nash is not known for being athleticly gifted or talented he is known for making his team better. I think at this point in his career shaq needs someone to make him better for a change. And if its true that Nash and Amare both said pull the trigger on this trade then I say go for it cause they the main ones who would have to make it work and believe that it would work.

Thu Feb 07, 2008 7:20 am

Wade is me second favourite player in the league...so i'm happy for him. Shaq is my fav big man all-time so i'll be happy to see him wind down his career with a guy like nash who will make him look better than he is. I'd really love to see a suns vs. lakers in the playoffs.

P.S I guess the heat's first pick will be the best center in the draft next year...

Thu Feb 07, 2008 7:35 am

^ in that case, it could be Hibbert, but it depends on which of the super Freshmen come out. You can't pass up on a Michael Beasley for a center.

Thu Feb 07, 2008 9:20 am

My initial thought of this trade was that Phoenix is getting raped. But, after more considerations I can see potential for both teams other than the obvious benefits for Miami. I believe that Shaq will give Phoenix more of a low post presence. Shaq will start as a 5 and Stoudemire will move down to 4 which will give them a much bigger line up. It may not be as fast and high flying but, it will give them some dominance in the paint if Shaq can get healthy. My worry for Phoenix is that I don't think Shaq will be able to keep up with their fast paced offense so they may need to change that slightly. But we shall see.

It's official now

Dwyane Wade, a new thread was not necessary.

Thu Feb 07, 2008 9:32 am

Did Shaq actually take some photos in a suns uniform, or do you think the Suns Marketing Department just did some really fancy photoshop work? Pretty good jersey switch, but then again they are professionals..

Thu Feb 07, 2008 9:40 am

It looks like a jersey switch. all they had to do was find an old Amare photo and voila

Thu Feb 07, 2008 9:42 am

Damn, and now I read that the Heat may waive Marion so he can be resigned with Phoenix.

Thu Feb 07, 2008 9:46 am

As if the Suns want Marion back anyway. The probably wouldn't have enough cap space for that anyway.

Man..Rick Astley takes me back on memory lane. A nigga couldn't be caught in the hood listening to that shit tho.

Thu Feb 07, 2008 12:10 pm

Bet on how far the Suns will go? :cheeky:

Thu Feb 07, 2008 12:15 pm

At least Amare gets to move down the the "4" and play his natural positon.
And with Nash as the PG, I see Shaq getting a lot of touches in the post, as long as he doesn't get called for 3 second violations......
If this is the Sun's answer to the Spurs, I think this is their year....
GO SUNS!
