Just post your answer...

Fifty damnit.

Washington D.C. is not a state.
Puerto Rico, Virgin Islands, American Samoa, etc are not states.

Sometimes I think there are 52 states. I wonder if I was taught this somewhere because it's confusing.

Lower 44 States + 4 Commonwealths + State of Alaska = Continental United States (49 States) + State of Hawaii = 50 States.

Or it might be alcohol talking ..

it was an argument....the person i was arguing with actually thought there were 52 states...and the sad part is that they learned this in high school. I was given names of teachers who actually teach A.P. US History saying that there are 52 states in the US. The scarier part is that this person's siblings gave me the same exact answer as well.

They say Washington D.C. is a state and either Alaska or Hawaii is the other state.........I want to go home, now.

As for that flag you posted, counting is hard.

I wonder if the state that The Simpsons live in counts. You know, the one that is bordered by Ohio, Nevada, Maine and Kentucky

yes its counted as 50+ territories, but actually its not states. the answer back in the posting of states+ territories is the actual technical right answer, at least when i was school we were thought both ways. states 50, but the right answer is states, Territorials and commonwealth and if you listen in throws that of judge in the commonwealth the court will say commonwealth not state sometimes so then next ? is can you name the us commonwealth that are considered states.

ps i also this right because my grandfather was a poly sci professor at a major US college for more than 40 years.

Well, he obviously wasn't an English professor.

Not that "political science professors" are anyone to tout. It doesn't make me someone anyone should ever listen to.

Of course, I am not contending what appears to be the technical accuracy of your (and an earlier) post.
