I recently started doing some research about this. If anyone doesn't know, its the end of the Mayan Calender, and supposedly the center of the milky way galaxy is going to be alligned with the sun for the first time in 26,000 years. I don't know a ton about the subject, so correct me if I'm wrong about that. There are many different theories about what will happen that day, ranging from the end of the world to worldwide enlightment. What does everybody think? Have any of you done any research about this before?

I'm interested about learning but my friend told me that 2012 was supposed to be the end of the world. Nostradamus or whatever was where he heard it from. Indy got any links on information about this?

I think the world is going to end. Like it ended in 2000.

Y2K. Yeah, I remember it like it was almost 8 years ago. All the computers crashed, planes fell out of the skies and the world ended.

Tue Dec 11, 2007 2:11 pm

I don't think I could survive the world ending again

Tue Dec 11, 2007 2:36 pm

I thought the end will be at 2047?

Tue Dec 11, 2007 3:04 pm

Psh, the world was supposed to end as far back as 999 CE, and there's a new date every time after that. Anyway, other than the world ending, the center of the milky way aligning with the sun for the first time in 26 000 years sounds cool.

Tue Dec 11, 2007 3:05 pm

we'll just have to settle this let's make a poll and see which year people want the world to end...

2000
2008
2012
2047

voting starts now!

edit: i vote for 2000..

By focusing on people who think the world is ending you are missing out on the interesting things about this date. That is just one theory.

To deny the fact that the world goes through different enviornmental stages is ignorant though, and it is plausible that the dramatic shift that will take place could cause massive floods or an ice age. Solar storms are another possibility.

Wait, so from what I can understand, people are predicting change to the earth caused by extraterrestrial (sp?) stuff in 2012? So that means, if nothing special happens (nothing that cannot be explained by the science as we know today), then the only thing that will happen on that day is the lining up of the Sun and Milky Way? Am I right?

As with most of these things in this world, I am undecided on what to think. Looking at the links Indy provided, some of the mathematical claims are pretty interesting, but some are sort of vague. Like something that is "almost exact". As one of my teachers used to say, "Almost done is just another way of lying about not being done at all". And also, if you twist a number enough ways, enough of them are going to end up being or having some kind of connection to the numbers 7, 11, 13, their multiples, and so on...

Sometimes I wonder if my life is like The Truman Show, and they made the movie to see if I'd catch on. This is one of those times.

Seriously, you all have got to be pulling my leg here.

Y2K was about computers crashin everywhere, and we were supposed to be fucked. This is about an alignment with the Sun or whatever, so it's different. I don't really think something's gonna happen thou, like the end of the world or a huge rock will hit the Earth, etc etc, but you never know. It has happened before, it could happen again some day.

Well, aliens is another probably loony theory. The thing that makes this strange is that there have been many prophicies about this date and the mayan calender, which has correctly predicted every sonar and lunar eclipse to this moment has the calender end and predicts an incredible crossroads and the end of the world as we know it. Obviously those things by themselves are insignificant. However, the fact that scientists and astronomers do see something huge lining up to happen enviornmentally with our planet it makes you wonder.

Lately my entire core of beliefs has been shaken up somewhat. I've never believed in ghosts and laughed at people who did my whole life. Then I go to a supposedly haunted cemetary and videotape it on halloween. While reviewing the video tape there was a freaky human like figure that was transparent walking very quickly, then turning around and walking the other way. 5 minutes later on the tape you see it just standing there. After that I did not totally swing the other direction but it made me learn not to dismiss things so easily. I think we are lucky that we may see the world go through a massive change in our lifetimes and it is interesting to read peoples ideas of what it may be.

I get off school at December 21. Now you guys are saying that I'm going to have my world end just after I finish making English presentations? There really is no God.

That's what he meant. It takes a handfull a few years to finish school. It'll take him a whole lotta years.

And here you are...rubbing it in. How would you like to be mentally handicapped huh Ben? Huh?!

Indy, so is the transparent figure on tape? And is it conclusive enough to see that it is transparent, and not a grave digger? Wow, if this is true, this will cause quite a stir.

In other words, proof or ban.

Huh? I have no idea what you mean. But I'm curious to find out how he saw it.

Hehehehehehe.

Yeah, I'd love to see the footage, Indy. I've always been interested in ghost stories. Supposedly, there's this haunted place in one of our old national parks where this little boy roams. My girlfriend has a picture where she unintentionally captured the photo of the ghost, and it was shown in the local newspaper. Pretty cool stuff.
