Behind the Scenes 1: The Conference
by: Isaiah Cruz

A decision has to be made. Do we pull the trigger or not? Do we trade Kobe Bryant?
The pressure has been mounting.
Outsed General Manager Mitch Kupchak had to make the hard decisions, and surprisingly, I was called to fill in.
Me, a reporter for the team.
Dr. Jerry Buss did not appoint his son, Jim, as the new GM, and that was a very shocking move, considering the fact he was behind his son's decision making the entire way.
After Mr. Buss' comments during training camp, the team has been uneasy.
Whispers of what'll possibly happen has surfaced, and players have been discussing whether they'll be included in any type of package in an effort to try to convince Kobe to stay.
It's funny they cover it up so much when speaking to reporters.
This will be very tough, but I have to decide today. The media is coming towards me, that very question about Kobe coming.
After much thought and consulting with Phil Jackson and the coaching staff, my decision has been made. The bright lights, the cameras, the microphones.

I stand up...

"We will not trade Kobe Bryant."

Welcome to the new season everybody.

Buss Irate at Lakers GM

EL SEGUNDO- In response to the Lakers General Manager Isaiah Cruz' comments regarding the status of Kobe Bryant as a member of the Los Angeles Lakers, owner Jerry Buss was irate.

Image
Jerry Buss

"He does NOT make the final decisions regarding the players," Buss told the AP in an interview before the Lakers' Opening Night game against the Houston Rockets. "I may have hired him but to totally disrespect my point regarding the Kobe Bryant situation, that's totally unacceptable. We will continue to listen to offers for Kobe and we will pull the trigger if we receive fair value in return."

Cruz could not be reached for comment.

"That's just a man whose feelings got hurt," Lakers coach Phil Jackson said on the current situation. "Our front office is not the best in the league right now, neither is it the most united. Right now the players, including Kobe, are preparing for tonight's game. I'm preparing for tonight's game. I'll just leave it at that."

This latest segment is sure to add more drama to the season, which hasn't even started yet.

Lakers Rally Past Houston In Opener

Box Score
LOS ANGELES
HOUSTON

Image Image
Tracy McGrady and Kobe Bryant provided quite a show.

LOS ANGELES- Nothing is certain in Lakerland.

Kobe Bryant's future is uncertain due to uncertainty with the front office officials. Thus, the Lakers' regular season brings on uncertain predictions.

One thing was certain though. Kobe Bryant came to play.

Bryant scored 14 of his 31 points in the fourth quarter to lead his Lakers past the Houston Rockets, 99-92, in a thrilling home opener. He started out 1-of-10 from the field and eventually finished 11-of-24.

Tracy McGrady was red-hot scoring 41 points on 18-of-27 shooting, and looked to put the Lakers away early as he scored 22 in the first half.

The Rockets led virtually the entire way, their biggest lead at twelve, 51-39. LA rallied numerous times, cutting down the lead to as much as six, but Houston put it back to double digits every time.

"Our defense needs work," Phil Jackson said. "We gave Houston too many open looks. That's why we were down early. And we need to cut down on our turnovers. The boys fumbled the ball too many times."

"We just kept fighting," Bryant said. "This is a test of who we are and what we're made of."

Notes: Two Lakers almost had double-doubles: Lamar Odom had 15 points and 8 rebounds, Kwame Brown had 12 points and 9 rebounds... Bryant and McGrady led their team in scoring and turnovers. McGrady had 7 and Bryant had 5.

Lakers Turn Tables On Suns

Lakers 128
Phoenix 104

Image
Nash went up against Bryant point for point.

PHOENIX- It first looked like your typical Phoenix Suns game. The other team shoots poorly, the Suns get the rebound and starts draining shots on their end, while coming up with a 61-49 lead at halftime. Analysts assumed that Phoenix would run away with the victory, especially with Steve Nash scoring 24 points at halftime with already 9 assists.

But Los Angeles came right back at them.

Kobe Bryant led a furious second half rally to totally dominate the Suns and pull of a 128-104 beating which sent the fans home silent and shocked.

Bryant scored 41 points with 7 assists to level with Nash, who turned into a scorer in the second half and also finished with 41 points and dished out 11 dimes. However, he had 7 of Phoenix's 20 turnovers.

As a team, the Suns finished with 17 assists. The Lakers had 25 assists and only 9 turnovers.

"It was a real confidence booster," said Lamar Odom, who finished with 23 points, 10 rebounds, 3 assists, 3 steals and a block. "We haven't been having much luck out here, but we did a really good job tonight."

"We forced them into a lot of unnecessary turnovers," Phil Jackson said, who later added a slight ribbing of the Suns' all-star guard. "I guess now the team should start throwing efficient passes instead of going all crazy with it."

Los Angeles out-scored Phoenix in the second half, 79-43.

BOOZER LIGHTS UP LA IN WIN

LAKERS 120
UTAH 130

Image

LOS ANGELES- 61 points is usually something you would see from Kobe Bryant.

Not this time.

Carlos Boozer torched the Lakers for 61 points on 30-of-46 shooting to go with 14 rebounds to lead the Jazz to a 130-120 win over LA, beating out Gilbert Arenas' 60, and second only to Wilt Chamberlain.

"Kobe's fifteen points behind whenever someone drops something big on their team," Boozer said after the game. "I was just hot tonight."

This was a reference on how Kobe Bryant scored 45 when Arenas got his 60. Tonight, Kobe Bryant finished the game with 46 points.

Boozer was firing on all cylinders, stroking jumpers over anyone who guarded him: Lamar Odom, Ronny Turiaf, Chris Mihm or Kwame Brown. He bullied his was inside, and sometimes found himself alone underneath.

"We didn't guard him tonight," Phil Jackson said. "He was alone under the basket or sometimes wide open."

"He's a really strong player," Bryant said. "But to say I'm fifteen points behind? I don't know what he meant but we'll be ready next time we face them."

Boozer scored 17 at halftime.

Three players were injured during the ball game. Deron Williams was injured on a charge one minute into the game. He did not return. Kobe Bryant hurt his leg but returned. Sasha Vujacic also got hurt and was cleared to play but did not return.

HORNETS HOLD BRYANT SCORELESS

LAKERS 83
NEW ORLEANS 89

Image

LOS ANGELES- Fans were stunned. Coaches in disbelief. Teammates shell-shocked. News media around the world fascinated at another intriguing story. The Hornets love every bit of it.

Kobe Bryant was held scoreless. A big fat zero to his name.

Nursing a bruised calf muscle, Kobe Bryant shot a 0-for-12 from the field, the last two attempts a pair of wide open dunks in the final minute, as the New Orleans Hornets hold on for an 89-83 win in front of 18, 997 disbelieving fans at the Staples Center.

Cutting a lead that was as big as 23 points to just three, 84-81 with 1:08 remaining, the Lakers had a chance to steal the game. But Bryant missed a pair of jams that would have turned the game around. When he final buzzer sounded, he walked to the locker room slowly with a dejected look on his face.

At home the fans in New Orleans must be celebrating because their team has just compeleted something "historical."

Peja Stojakovic led New Orleans with 33 points on 13-of-25 shooting.

Lamar Odom did his best to try to lead Los Angeles, scoring 22 points and pulling down 11 rebounds.

"One night an unbelievable thing happens which was Carlos Boozer dropping 61 on our heads," Phil Jackson said. "Now an even more unthinkable event happens with Kobe going scoreless. I now bet those boys at ESPN are going to write something intriguing."

"Containing him was necessary," Morris Peterson, Kobe's main defender said. "I'm part of history now. The one who he dropped 81 on and part of the team who held him scoreless."

Bryant was unavailable for comment after the game.

Notes: Neither team made a 3-pointer, with LA missing 7 and the Hornets missing 13.
