Anthony/ Nuggets Destroy Sonics On Opening Night
In the Pre-Game show I told you all to watch the battle of the small forwards, Durant putting up solid numbers in his debut game offensivly, but what he did on the offensive end pales into comparison on what he could'nt do to stop arguably the best small forward in the game, Carmelo Anthony, not only was 'Melo pushing Durant off the ball defensivel, he was beating Durant up the court for fast break flushes, fade away jumpers from the wing, and a nasty slam on Kenny Thomas in the third. Netting a career high 20 field goals, Durant being smacked left, right and center in hard picks set by Nene and Camby took its toll on the 19 year old as he looked banged up, slumped on the bench in the final quarter. Since losing Ray Allen and Rashard Lewis last season, Seattles shooting would take a beating and it showed tonight especially from behind the arc, shooting just 5-20, Durant the main culprit.
Trailing by just eight at half-time, 'Melo turned it on pouring in 25 of Denvers 39 points in the third, sending the home crowd into histerics and a Sonics team scratching their heads trying to find the right match up. "Melo was great tonight," said J.R Smith, still trying to comprehend what happened in the third, "He was in some sort of zone out there, we just gave him the ball and isolated him on Kev, he took him apart," Smith had no problem shooting the three-ball tonight, making five of his six attempts from deep en rout to 21 points.
One of Seattles shining lights tonight was Luke Ridnour, though he did'nt shoot the ball well [5-17], he finished the game with 16 points and a game high 11 assists. "We have to refocus now," said a somber Ridnour, "We can't dwell on these type of losses, we have Phoenix tomorrow night, and if we are stuck thinking about this game then we will lose by alot more against a higher scoring team,"
