Talk about NBA Live 08 here.

Just read IGN's review. Reviewer says that shooting is now completely CPU controlled. There is no skill involved in terms of timing of release. WOW! If this is true, 08 totally sucks already. Why don't the idiot's just sim the games then? What's the point of playing?
How can EA suck so badly? I mean, programmers at Infinity Ward and Crygen have been kicking ass with FPS in multitudes of environments and graphics. I think the post up game/player physical presence in Call of Duty 2 is even better than in Live 07. Are the programmers at EA Canada just retarded?

that's a shitty news, but i knew bout that a long time ago from the preview!

it's true. you just press the button and they do the sg shots. it is however realistic, though somehow i dont mind, cause yuo don't miss or hit more jumpers than usual.
this game is more about getting open and taking the right shots from the right places.

SHAFT23, allright, let's c! if u have a diffeder on your face, how would u shot the ball? as usual like at practice? or u're gonna shot it quickly? or slowly, to let defender get down? if u'll drop as usual - u'll get your block! i don't understand what are the STUPID BIT**S SITING down there at ea canada, that they making such moves?! and last year - how stupid human must be to create a b-ball game and remove SUBS from it???

In playing, I really haven't noticed a different. It has not taken away from the enjoyability of the game in the slightest for me.

Does this alter your ability to pass in the air instead of shoot? I remember when I had that option on in NBA LIve 2003, I had a harder time doing that.

I'd agree with that; it's certainly still possible to take a bad shot even with a good shooter, if you attempt a fadeaway or leaner when it's a bad idea or pull up for a jumpshot when you're out of control. Traditionally I've preferred setting Shot Control to "User" since I felt I had more control over the shot but so far I haven't really had a problem with the change in NBA Live 08. I still find I miss bad attempts and make shots off open looks and good ball movement more often.

You can still do that, so long as you press pass before releasing the shoot button.

Actually, Andrew, I'd notice it. It may be a minor difference to the eye, but the concept makes all the difference.
Let's say I get free for a wide open jumpshot. I want my skill to somewhat determine whether or not I hit it. Just because I'm open doesn't mean that I should hit it at the % that my player is shooting. After all, I'm the guy playing the game. Just like in an FPS, I wouldn't want my character's skill rating to determine whether or not I kill the guy.
Kind of lame. I'm sure after I start playing I won't notice it - but it becomes less of a game. I already had the feeling that bball video games are totally dependent on the CPU "allowing" you to hit a shot or not. Now, it's even more obvious.

I understand that and I don't entirely disagree, as I said I've historically preferred the User setting for Shot Control. However, for me personally it hasn't really felt like a detriment so far, though admittedly I've only been playing the final version for a couple of days now.

It probably doesn't matter for offline games, but it's really important for offline games. All the good shootes lost their advantage.

My favorite things is when
grammar nazis don't spell the word they are trying to correct correctly.

whoa....

doesn't matter for offline games

well it's either Live 08 where u can hit open jump shots or 2k7 where you never hit open shots even on perfect releases.

I'm totally for this decision actually. It makes gameplay much funner for me personally.

well, it matters less
In online games you could see the difference between good and bad (specially 3P) shooters (ie users), now the good shooters won't have any advantage by that skill... It will all come down to the team/fg rating you have, shoot selection and defensive skills.
Sometimes you could get a lot from some average shooter, when you had a good feel for his shot style, or you could do worse when some shot style wasn't to your liking. Now it's all only about FG. I remember i used Delonte West a lot one year, I just really liked his shot and I got great %.

i have played a ton of games the past 4 days offline and online. mostly online and i really can say that it doesn't make a difference to me.
It's hard to explain, but it all turns out well in the end of the game when you look at the %
its about defense and picking your spots and taking your time. I'm shooting about 50% FG and 40% 3pt in online games in 15 games total. 3pt is high, cause guys go for the steal and i end up witht he wide open three most of the time and they make it on all star level.
passing in the air is possible, but you gotta do it fast like in real life. Arenas has a jumper where he doesnt jump high so you have les time, but ben gordon and jason terry really jump for theri shots so you have more time to make up your mind.

Right, the 3-point contests for instance. I used to drain them with Michael Redd but would have a whopping hell of a time with Larry Bird because his shot was over his head and weird. Now, it's pointless.
How does it work now, you just hold the button and it really doesn't matter when you release it? Then can I just keep holding it and shoot on the way down?
Fri Oct 12, 2007 12:09 pm
so, then, if im defended by kobe bryant, i guess my only option i have is, pass right?
Fri Oct 12, 2007 4:49 pm
The other thing no one considered is: say you have 0.5 seconds on the clock and you inbound. You don't have time to do the full motion shot so you have to quick tap/chuck it up. Does this stupid shoot thing now affect that too???
Fri Oct 12, 2007 7:49 pm
i got a shot off with less than a second with ray allen so it is possible. you can shoot a fade away or a close shot those are quicker. unless the player has a quick shot they wont do a quick shot.
