I think this is bad news

I know this is too early but here it is:

this was taken in an fifa 08 interview
Will the PC have next-gen gameplay and graphics and if not, why not?
The gameplay engine that we’ve build for the Xbox 360 and PS3 is designed for multi-threaded, multi-core consoles. This is a significantly larger amount of power than even the top-end PCs on the market right now. Unlike many FPS titles that scale through dropping down the graphics detail, most of the power is used for the gameplay to calculate AI, animation, ball physics etc – we can’t drop the number of players!.

We have done tests that show that our new gameplay engine takes up to 34 times the CPU power of the CG gameplay engine. In other words, there are very few PC’s available in the market that could run a next-gen FIFA 08 gameplay engine.

Instead, we’ve focused on innovating and polishing the gameplay on the current-gen engine for FIFA 08 PC. We’ve also improved the graphics and added 8-player LAN this year.

in my opinion we still wont have next gen on 09...
because based on what he said... only 10-15% of computers now can handle it...next year it could be between 15-20%.. which I think is still not enough for EA to consider a port....
I hope im wrong though..

well we already know that 08 wasnt going to be next gen, my guess is that live wont be for a while

Sat Sep 08, 2007 10:45 am

I agree that it's not the most encouraging news but it's worth noting that it seems the main roadblock for FIFA is the number of players for which it has to calculate the AI and process animations, ball physics and so on, which would number twenty-two assuming both teams have all their players on the field. A basketball game features less than half that number of players on the court at any one time.

Sat Sep 08, 2007 12:09 pm

Yeah, and it won't be a big deal on the AI as Live tends to leave that out of the game anyway.

Sat Sep 08, 2007 12:51 pm

"only 10-15% of computers now can handle it..."

There are about 223 million PCs in use in the USA. If the 10% number is correct, then 22 Million can handle it.

If it's 1%, that's 2.3 Million.

Multicore, multithread PCs can be had now for under $1000.

Sounds like bull to me. Scaling down graphics? The current high-end gfx cards out are already better and more capable then the xbox 360's. They're telling us that quad core processors can't keep up with the 360's? Oh, I bet they're scaling back something for the PS3, since it's running with slowdowns, reportedly. I don't think they have even tried to port one of their next gen sport titles to the PC.

I'll take next-gen gameplay with current gen graphics.

Sat Sep 08, 2007 1:11 pm

Especially considering how easy the 360 SDK and XNA are reported to make porting games to Windows.

Wow what a bunch of lies. A top end PC right now is more powerful than an xbox 360 or PS3. There are already next gen graphics games on the PC already. For example, bioshock, in that game the PC version can get direct x 10 effects , higher resolutions etc . . the xbox 360 is the one that is toned down. Crysis also a PC game exclusive isn't being developed for the xbox 360 or ps3 because it just isn't powerful enough. I don't buy what their saying.

Why don't they just come out and make it clear that the only reason why they aren't porting next gen ea sports game is because they believe it won't sell well enough to warrant a port instead of trying to spin things.

lol... they are liers... I mean core2 quod only cost like 280$, and its the best Processor for home users now. In half of year almost eny new home pc(that sometimes will be used for gaming) will have something as core2quod. Video card? 8800gtx, gts are fucking good, about 300-400$. In half of year new 9800 will appear so, so 8800 prices will drop 2x. And every gamer will have 8800. rams? lol you can get 4gigs for 200-250$. what they talk is nonsecse.. If you add up everything a good pc(verygood) cost like 1,200 $?( prices maybe abit of, cuz i used prices from my country) If you ask my 1 grand for new pc isnt so much, look at ps3 or xbox they cost like 500$. If you can buy a new concole you should be able to buy new pc.. and it should be only your choice you want cheaper, only play games, sometimes watch dvd, or do enything you want, and even be able to upgrade you hardware.

wow, if this is true so I guess that we still have hope with '09 being Next-gen(for PC)...

Sun Sep 09, 2007 6:54 am

We should have made a petiton as soon as 07 came out to bring out 08 in next gen. Matter of fact, I think we should make one now for 09, before they start planning.

Sun Sep 09, 2007 8:23 am

360/PS3 games are made with the multiple cores in mind - it would probably take some major work to get them going optimally on single-core PCs, and they're not going to do anything more than a port.

Sun Sep 09, 2007 10:46 am

What about the game in your signature...or all the other X360 ports...

Sun Sep 09, 2007 11:26 am

We need next generation

EA's shitheads should watch the PES 08 for the PC.

It's not a port with minimal extra effort made as EA Sports is known to do.

I agree.
I have a question: do you know if there will be a PC Version of Nba 2k8? I think it's the only possibility (for us) to play a good basketball game of 07-08 season.

Mon Sep 10, 2007 8:12 am

^
sad to say that there wont be a pc version of 2k8,

Mon Sep 10, 2007 8:39 am

yeah it'd be really cool if there was a pc version of 2k8, then we'd actually have some competition as far as the pc nba games are concerned.

It certainly couldn't hurt. I'm not sure how effective it would be but we've got nothing to lose.

Tue Sep 11, 2007 3:26 pm

@andrew
how many people do you think we need to convince EA??

That may or may not be true, but their have already been next gen sports ported to the PC, released or planned. These games can be played on a single core PC as well as a multi core PC. Don't understand why EA can't do it too, instead of making up lies they should just tell the truth.

Tue Sep 11, 2007 4:56 pm

I think a petition is definitely a good idea to get next gen PC sports game to the PC. For example, the PSP community petition for Resident Evil to come to the PSP and they got thousands of signatures. The news of the petition got some of the developers attention with them saying that it was an impressive amount of signatures and made them think twice or something like that. Nows it is yet to be seen whether or not RE will come to the PSP or not since this is new news, but at least they did something that gave them a chance of getting it on their platform.

If someone starts up a petition i'll sign it right away, and if we spread the petition around the internet it will spread like wild fire. This may get EA's attention, you won't know until you try.

Tue Sep 11, 2007 5:15 pm

a petition won't do anything.....$$$ is the language of business and there is none in the PC market. If there was a profitable opportunity someone else would have already tapped into it!
