Laptops

for anyone who has had either a dell inspiron 600m or a dell inspiron 640m(e1405); which would you recommend, ie, which one is better overall

I recommend you a MacBook, but if you want a PC laptop make sure you don't buy an exploding Dell :D.

My classmate's Acer laptop suddenly ran slowly. He has 1GB of RAM and an Intel Core Duo processor (like 3.0 GHz or something), an on-board 256 MB ATI video card and some other stuff that is much superior than my desktop.

He installed Live 07 to his laptop, and it ran pretty choppy.

^uh that's cuz Acer is garbage.

we sell Acers at Circuit City for like $500 every week and normal laptops are like $800-$1000. it's a pretty wel-known fact in the US that Acer's really not that great.

I'm glad you said US Acers.

Our Acers come straight from Germany and those Germans are pretty damn serious about the quality of their work. I've had my laptop for around 2 years now, it's never been put off...day & night it goes strong as ever. I've had maybe...3 crashes since I've had it.

God, I beg of you...not because I've boasted about it, means you should kill my laptop tomorrow. Please God, I know your sense of humor is kind of cynical/sadistic, but give me a break here!

Yeah, Acer's pretty much everything you could ask from a PC here in Europe, along with the Sony Vaio.

The prices, however, are crazy (considering they run Windows). The medium price for a good Acer (laptop, of course) is around €1200, and I'd say you need about €1400 to get a good Sony Vaio.

I paid €999 for mine, my sister used to work at Media Markt.

Lucky bastard! Is it a TravelMate or an Aspire?

Wed Jul 25, 2007 10:18 pm

Travelmate, although I don't travel with it as much anymore. Well...school's out, so that's logical.

I have an IBM Thinkpad. I love it.

Intel Core 2 Duo 2.0 ghz processor
2 gb of ram
some high powered graphics card by ATI

Got it through UNC's laptop program.

I have 2. 1st one is an HP Pavilion 1331se. pretty weak now, but its just to get online at starbucks and stuff like that, lol. The quickplay stuff is pretty neat, though.

Second is my main mobile horse. Gateway cx2618 Tablet PC. started with 512, but I upgraded to 2GB off DDR2 533. Integrated intel 915 is crap for modern games but if you do a little research you can really get some nice results. Fable, Oblivion, Kotor 2, Live (with lighting enabled), you can get alot of of a little if you know how to manage your stuff. Total spent on laptop and mem? about $800. <3 newegg.

Any notebook user out there owes it to themselves to at least try out a Tablet. It will change the way you work. I wont get anything else from here on out.

Some Toshiba laptops run smooth at first. Another classmate of mine has a Toshiba Satellite laptop that runs smoothly at first, then months later it processes like her brain. Slow like hell. :shake:

hehe meanie. Cant blame the machine though... I'll be the first to tell you that Gateway aint the best out there, but with regular maintence and taking the time to organize your stuff, im well over a year with no repeated crashes, no slowdowns, spyware, anything. Its amazing how many heavy duty users refuse to defragment their HD on a regular basis. I do it every 3 days or so.
