I think the saying goes, just because there's a correlation, there doesn't mean there is a connection (causation)
Anyway, they blamed Marilyn Manson, violent tv shows, and violent video games, but IIRC, there was a study done that shows that being witness to such violence would prevent a person from acting it out. Then again, an argument could be made that such violence would desensitize the person, and thus enable the individual to carry it out. Either way, I'd never blame tv shows, music, or any other external influences as much as I'd blame (to a certain extent) parents and childhood trauma.
