What frustrates you about your computer?

Thu Mar 22, 2007 8:41 pm

Just as the topic says, im interested to know about what frustrates everyone about their computer?

For me it would be the speed of this old girl not being up to scratch

Im not a microsoft employee tagging everyones problems or anything, weve been discussing it a bit in class and i just thought id see what everyone thinks

Thu Mar 22, 2007 8:53 pm

the stupid integrated video card (N)...someday i need to put a real card in this rig

Thu Mar 22, 2007 9:09 pm

not so much my computer, but the broadband speeds and connection in NZ

Thu Mar 22, 2007 9:14 pm

^ Amen.

Right now I'm downloading DB Commander off the main site at a blazing 18kb/s

Seriously my "broadband" maxes out at 30kb. :x

Same for me. Doesn't bother me too much though, i guess cos i only got broadband not long ago, so ignorance is bliss. :P

What pisses me off is my video card. I think it's a geforce 4.

My lack of ram.

The wierd virus type thing that i don't know how to get rid of.

Thu Mar 22, 2007 11:48 pm

That I'm running Windows. I'd rather have an OS X. Ah well, I'll be getting one in a few months.

Fri Mar 23, 2007 12:49 am

My cooler runs too fast, you know that little fan?

I've got fuck clue of how to like clean the laptop, what do I open and stuff...? So basically I just blow in to the fan thingie from time to time to get out as much dust as I can.

That's all that bugs me, for the rest I love it. It doesn't do any weird shit on me.

Have you tried compressed air? An aeresol can of that stuff gets dust out in hard places well.

Fri Mar 23, 2007 1:26 am

yeah, compressed air owns.

I hate the fact that I can't run any good PC games on this thing without it lagging beyond all belief.
Can't get Half-Life 2 past "Medium" and still it lags.

I'm surprised I can play emulators.

Fri Mar 23, 2007 1:53 am

the fact it crashed a couple summers ago and it still doesnt work exactly right....also my video card being old so the games i play look like shit...(for instance Jao's street patch for Live looks like shit on my PC)

Fri Mar 23, 2007 5:07 am

what frustrates me is that my new comp is so sexy. 8-)

my old one was a compaq presario and the power button stopped working like 3 months in. the screen started cutting in and out at about 2 years and the integrated video card drivers didn't work with DX9 so i had to choose between playing new games or being able to play any videos on the comp without fucking it up.

Fri Mar 23, 2007 6:01 am

The freaking NVIDIA drivers for Vista combined with my 7900 GT and an AMD processor causes most games to be a flickering corrupted mess, and it has gone unfixed for two months now :wall:

Fri Mar 23, 2007 6:05 am

Everytime my computer logs off or restarts I am logged into a temporary profile. This means I lose all my bookmarks and all my saves in My Documents. Yeah, that's probably the worst on a long list of things.

The most annoying thing right now for me is the Stupid Genuine Windows Advantage (my copy of XP is legit, not pirated). Its not so much that I can't use Media Player 11 or that I can't connect with my 360, its that it tries to install at least once every week even when I say do not install without me approving. And when I click no, or later, it restarts the computer.

yeah I'm having problems with the new WMP 11 as well. I couldn't even play a regular DVD I bought from the store.

Fri Mar 23, 2007 9:33 am

That, even though its supposed to be fast, its as slow as shit. I would format the whole box, but the thing is, that it would require 5 hours to collect/find and burn everything I need to CD.

Fri Mar 23, 2007 10:20 am

Windows XP doesn't come with a DVD decoder. Sometimes OEMs will include something like CyberDVD so their customers don't complain about it, and WMP will use that decoder. Maybe you uninstalled that? Just throwing out ideas.

Best way to format is to create a new partition, put all your files on that, format the first partition and install Windows, then move everything back and delete the second partition.

Fri Mar 23, 2007 10:46 am

^ yeah my HP came with Media Center and it has its own "Quickplay" DVD player so I don't need to play it on WMP11. Is there any way I can change the default program to play DVDs to quickplay instead of WMP?

Fri Mar 23, 2007 11:09 am

That I dont have a 50 inch monitor and only have 250gig of space to save shit.

Open My Computer and hit Tools=>Folder Options, go to the File Types tab - DVD Video should be somewhere near the top. See what's under the "Opens with" field and change it.

I have 320 GB of storage space and it's still not enough. Damn Bittorrent.

 Thats a whole lot of space...

When I got my new (used) computer, it was listed at 3.2GHz. OK, thats fine but then the guy said its actually 2.2GHz, but he listed it as 3.2 because the brand that it is, their 2.2GHz models are the same as another companys 3.2GHz models. I was fine with that.

But when I check my system specs, I see 1.01GHz...

:?

Nothing bothers me too much at the moment, though my PC's motherboard has been discontinued which limits my upgrade options, aside from buying a whole new system. I could put more RAM in but it's not urgent. I'm sure I'll upgrade down the road but right now I can't justify the expense.

We're plagued with the same issue in Australia so I can definitely empathise there. The coverage is pretty shocking too, there's a lot of people who can't get broadband period let alone the higher end connections.

What frustrated me most was when I attempted to renew my Norton Antivirus subscription in a not-so-legal way and instead my computer got rammed up the ass so to speak. It took an hour to start up, I couldn't download anything, no programs would run. Worst of all, it would crash every single time within an hour of running. I felt real bad because I had ruined a nice, new computer and I wasn't about to go tell my dad about it. Amazingly, I was able to fix it by getting rid of the devestating virus through an online antivirus program since Norton would no longer run. I was then able to install a new version of Norton and now everything runs smoothly.

I learned my lesson the hard way.

250 GB of space is the standard nowadays. You can get up to 3 terabytes on a Mac Pro these days.

I think you got ripped off. I'd demand a refund.

whoa! so its not really an athlon 3000+?!

if it is really a 3000+ model all you need to do is configured your mobo. maybe it is set to a lower fsb. it has a manual included right? or if you dont want to touch a bios or your mobo, a technician could help you with it. ;)
