Ideas for Potential Sports Site

Fri Feb 09, 2007 10:44 am

Hey guys I wanted to ask others' opinion for this. I'm thinking of making a sports site with these general ideas:

- Something to do with real life nba, nfl, mlb, nhl etc (including players)
- Something maybe related to fantasy sports
- Possibly something with stats

Thats all I have for now, but I'm pretty serious in pursuing this so if ya'll can help me out, I would appreciate it....thanks

What exactly are you asking here?

I need some suggestions for a website im thinking of making.

it should look good? be more specific

well sorry for not being clear enough I guess, but I want to make a site that has something to do with sports and I'm having a hard time coming up with an idea to base my site on. Maybe an easier question. What would be your ideal sports website? Like your dream sports website; what would it be/what would it have in it?

Hope thats easier.

Well, it would probably need to have breakings news within a few minutes of something happening, and I'm not sure how you would be privy to such information.

Considering this is an NBA site, your best bet would to make another NBA site...

Not sure why you would bother though, seeing that there are 6million others

espn.com

Give it something that other sports sites can't - key rule. Otherwise why should anyone visit it?

Problem: how would he get something that other sites (espn.com) dont have?

Sports Fanatic, u can only creat fantasy/game sports site! coz real life- based site won't be that popular, there are giant opponents, against who u have no chance!

Those giant opponents also have fantasy sections... good idea, but keep thinking

Heaps of stuff. Opinions. Features. Free money. I'm no thinker but i'm sure there are things you can have that ESPN doesn't. It's just that this guy seems to have no idea. His thought process is all wrong. Instead of getting an idea for a sports site, then doing it. He wants to make a sports site just for the sake of making a sports site, then think of his ideas.

Nick is right about one thing, you need writers. You need people who are good at writing and can post their articles/opinions onto your website. Make people want to come to your site to see what new story has been posted. If you are a great writer then that is even better. But if you are really serious about it then overtime you are going to have to hire some writers. Some will do it for free to get some exposure and others will demand some kind of wage.

Try to do what you love and you want to do. Make that website the best possible place for people with your interests to come to. If you try to make a website that fits other people's interest you will eventually give up and not care about it anymore. It happens a lot. Do what you love and hopefully the public loves it back. That's about the best advice I can give you.

k guys thanks for the advice and opinions. I'll be thinking about it more now.

Hire Bill Simmons

My advice is to add some type of comedy element to it. That's what my ideal sports site would have.

Post a blog with a bunch of rumors.

It's on one site that I have and it's really nice. Also, add something with the NFL Draft. People are really interested in it.

I think editorials would be the best way to go. If you watch enough basketball yourself, you can write up interesting scoops, or views. If you're into fantasy, you can give out fantasy picks of the night, or sleepers. Discuss award candidates (MIP, MVP, DPOY, etc).

You don't have to give out breaking news necesarily, but you could keep updated links to the most popular stories on ESPN if you wanted to go in that direction.

Just some ideas
