So, what genre of video games do you like best? And in each genre, what would be some of your favourite games of that genre?
For me, I like sports and racing games... I'm not a shoot em up type of guy and RPGs make me feel sick, literally.
Here's my favourite game in each genre would be... and a slight explanation of each genre in case some people don't know:
Action - Action can be action-adventure which features games like say Grand Theft Auto or Zelda... or First Person shooters like Half Life and Halo. For me, I like to play GTA San Andreas...
Fighting - Self-explanitory... one of my favourites is Street fighter...
Role Playing - RPGs aren't my cup of tea but everyone has surely heard of Final Fantasy... Just a question: is Pokemon RPG? I remember the good old days of Pokemon

... Multiplayer games like WoW are said to be included in this genre too... but I don't play WoW and I frown on WoW players too.
Platform - Vintage games... 2D... I don't like them either... not my cup of tea... maybe because I was never good at them...
Simulation - This genre includes all types of simulation games... sports of course are included and it includes titles like Sim City too... My favourite is the Live Franchise which is only there cause I love basketball... and yeah, racing is a sub-genre of simulation games...
Strategy - Starcraft is my favourite strategy game only because it was the first game I ever played on a PC.
^^ there are many other genres/sub-genres but this is all I will write...

i love a good strategy game to be honest, like beneath a steel sky, that game was amazing

I like mostly sports and racing but i do enjoy strategy and simulation

I like simulation (sports) the most because I feel they have the greatest replay value. I like action games as well, but not as much.

Fighting games - Tekken Series, The Capcom games. good for short games and can also take up your time trying to master them. Good for playing against friends too.
Action/Adventure - MGS Series. Good mix of story and action. Especially the MGS series. I'm not into survival horror though. I'm not a fan of the controls and all the going back and forth looking for items.
I play a good number of the other genres as well minus the Japanese RPGs since I'm not a big fan of most of their themes or the game engines. And the anime factor as well. Nothing against those games. Just not my taste.

i dont consider all sports simulation, i think they count ast their own genre...there's a monumental difference between simfarm/simcity/the sims (ok any maxis game) and NBA Live or Madden.

I play FPS/Action and Sports, so Action.

Thats why I said there are heaps of sub-genres.

The poll doesn't reflect the difference between a sports and racing and sim city/sims game player.

I do like Action, but I like Simualtion more.
Mon Nov 06, 2006 9:47 pm
Sports games, mainly basketball ones. Dont mind the old action games with a good story.

I like the cross over genre's like GTA: san andreas that are based in action but have other shit. Another example is hulk ultimate distruction, kotor, mafia and marvel ultimate alliance more recently. Games that are strictly about beating up hordes of stupid AI gets boring after a level or two.
My close second favourite are basketball games....they are the only ones i purchase cause it takes me a long time to get tired of um. The replay value is almost unlimited.

Ah Yohance, reminded me of something.
Are Star Wars game in their own sub-genre? Your thoguhts?
And my favourite SW game of all time has to be Rogue Squadron on N64... god I loved it... second would be KOTOR which I never finished cause of time restraints but a better game than Rogue Squadron... i chose RS cause I'm a big fan of the old movies and their dog fight scenes

Well I don't think Monkey Island, Gabriel Knight or Grim Fandango could really be considered action games. They hardly require you to have reflexes and what not. Besides in most adventure games you can't die.
Action: Resident Evil 4. There are hardly any flaws in this game. It's like you're playing a movie.
Fighting: King of Fighters XI. Any King of Fighters is ok, but I'll just choose the most recent one.
RPG: Chrono Trigger. I don't think there is any other RPG that could draw me in like this one. Not to mention there are multiple endings. (I beat it a total of 10 times.)
Platform: Super Mario World. New Super Mario Bros is a close second, but it doesn't quite have the magic(??) that Super Mario World has. Plus there are way more secrets in Super Mario World. Special Star Road, Top Secret Level, etc.
Simulation: Winning Eleven 10. Well I've clocked in way too many hours to say any other game, although the game is starting to get boring.
Strategy: Total Annihilation. For some reason I didn't like Starcraft much, but I loved Total Annihilation. Maybe it was the sheer amount of units, or the semi 3d graphics. I believe this is also Peter Molyneux's (creator of Black and White, Fable, Populous and Movies.) favorite title!

Action games- i like Unreal Tournament on the PC really never played them on consoles
Fighting- Street Figher II was the 1st game i played and it was on the SNES. Mortal Kombat Series also has some great games that match up with street fighter and with a little gore on the side.
RPG's- no doubt on this one Final Fantasy Series is my fav. currently playing FFXII i tried to play some pokemon to see what all the fuss was about never really like it cause its on the gameboy/color/advance to small of a screen for me. lol
Platform- Gotta go with NES and the super mario games, till this day me and my GF break out the old NES and pop on Super Mario 3 for fun.
Simulation- gotta go with Madden the king of all sports games noboyd does it like madden.
Strategy- hmm only games i got into were Warcraft I,II and III and startcraft Blizzard is good at those games i never got why they did WoW so lame got away from what warcraft was known for maybe they tried to compete with FFXI Online. never like those RPG's online.
OH yeah and Racing games- Mario Kart Series owns ALL
