I have 2 things to try to clarify here and we may never reach a definitive decision but here goes nothing (inspired by the weakest flaw threads random tangent into music and i decided to not perpetuate being off topic and transferring the discussion here)

1. What the hell is emo? How is this a genre? Dashboard Confessional for instance is considered emo, while my chemical romance is also, and honestly i cant see 2 rock bands being further apart in styles. People tell me "its emotional music"...no thats called a GOOD song...if a song evokes no emotion, then what the hell is the point of it? music is about pouring out emotion and making the listener feel what you feel through your words/instruments/beats etc. Who can listen to get low without wanting to party? Who can listen to the beatles come together without wanting to groove with everyone around? Basically what i qualify as punk, everyone else is putitng as emo (fallout boy is way too fucking happy to fit my definition of emo...)...someone wanna help me on this definition
2. What the hell is this indie genre bullshit? yes there are many good unsigned bands and i'm all for supporting smaller/local music...but just because you arent on a major label doesnt make you your own genre/good. A friend on indie music: "Indie music is the ultimate copout, because if the bands were any good, they would've gotten signed. All indie music does is perpetuate their egos that they're a good band and they just keep playing suckily" I agree with this in a way, obviously not that all good bands get signed. I know probably thousands that dont. But what are your guys take?

did you hear about that new emo pizza??? It cuts itself! are the jokes out there, and while funny in a sick way...what the hell? Anyway, discuss and i'll put in my input when i have a little more time

The term "Emo" is now mainly used to describe the way a person dresses, etc. not to describe a type of sound.
Back in the late 80's/early-mid 90's, the term "emo" meant "emotional" but it wasn't considered a music genre I believe. I think most bands that formed from the mid/late 80's to the late 90's have done "emo" songs (if "emo" stands for "emotional") but I think having done "emo" songs isn't enough to consider a band "emo". Anyways I don't think emo should be considered a music genre.

I thought emo had more to do with the lyrical content of the music rather than the musical style of the bands.

As for illini's second point, the same thing goes on with hip-hop. There's people who like a group because no one else likes them, and abandon them as soon as they get any notoriety. It's the only reason wack-ass rappers like Sage Francis have fans. Now there is a lot of really good artists in the underground and indie scenes, but just being a part of the scene doesn't make you good. Just as being on the Heat or the Spurs doesn't make you one of the best players in the league. In addition, just because you aren't underground or indie doesn't mean you suck. To continue the metaphor, if you aren't on the Heat or the Spurs it doesn't mean you can't be one of the best players.

Game just dropped a remix to One Blood. I'm upping on HHC right now. It's got 24 artists on it. Nuts! 12 minutes long!

I'm not tryna be a hater but am I the only one who thinks that Game's album was mad weak? Seriously, his lyrics are so repetative and 90%, well make that 95% of the time without any substance, it's annoying. The message he delivers throughout the whole album could be summed up and written down in like 40 seconds.

Tue Nov 07, 2006 10:58 pm

I agree. The Game has never been a deep lyricist. Most of his material relies on dope producers' beats imo.

Wed Nov 08, 2006 12:49 am

I didn't even "get" Game's album when it was leaked. Some people say it was one of the best of the year but I seriously doubt it. I'm not much for his lyrics either.

Wed Nov 08, 2006 7:07 am

I mean theres some tracks on there I bump but I don't think it was that great. Not gonna cop it. Documentary was better in my opinion.

Wed Nov 08, 2006 7:36 am

Yeah, you do that. Don't cop it. That's the coppy thing to do.

Thu Nov 09, 2006 10:42 am

If Game cut down the amount of tracks to 10 or 11. He would have an amazing album. But fillers kill it, and the beats dont sound a thing like his old album so it was difficult to adapt to it.

overall, Documentary was better.

Hey, I was wondering if you guys think that the band "The Fray" are good and if it is worth it to go to their concert. I've never been to a concert yet, and the Fray are coming here soon, but I just wanted your opinions on them (I don't care if you bash them or anything).

Thu Nov 09, 2006 11:01 am

Good work johnny...lol...but anyways about the Fray, i dont mind them and i'm obsessed with over my head...but i havent heard the rest of their stuff. It depends on price/the venue size/ all sorts of good stuff like that. I've been to cheap concerts for 1 song before and been blown away by the opener bands (Ima Robot, Lostprophets, Hoobastank for 5 bucks)....so its really up to you

Thu Nov 09, 2006 4:49 pm

Don't you love inexpensive CD's? I just picked up Redman's Dare Iz A Darkside and Ice Cube's The Predator today. Alas, the local stores feel it is unneccessary to stock copies of AZ's The Format. I will have to wait.

Yeah i reckon The Fray are pretty good, i've got about 5 songs and they're all consistantly good, if you like over my head, you should like the rest

Yup. Both of those are amongst my own classics. Just copped some old Mobb Deep and Method Man.

The Game is sick, I liked his first album...
but you can't listen to a Game song without hearing "six-four Impala", "chrome hydraulics", "40 ounce", and "Compton". He manages to find a way to put those phrases in every song.

btw, tomorrow... err... tonight (Thursday night in the US) I'm going to see Lupe Fiasco in concert. It should be pretty decent, some of his stuff was decent. I really liked his verse in Kanye's Touch The Sky, but none of his solo songs really sound like that.

Thu Nov 09, 2006 9:42 pm

Seriously I can't understand why anyone would like The Game. Honetsly, there is absolutely nothing great about his music.

By the way, Lupe Fiasco's Food & Liquor was a decent album, much better than I expected it to be. Personally I like his solo stuff alot more that his guest appearences.

Fri Nov 10, 2006 12:48 am

Yeh Lupe's coming down here for Big Day Out (big concert with a shit load of performers), I'm hoping he does a sideshow...because I ain't got $150 to spend on tickets for big day out.
