Man... just got back from watching "The Departed" and its definitely one of the better movies I've seen in a long time. The story dragged a bit towards then end, but they more than make up for it with the rush of things near the end... including just about everyone getting popped

just finished watching mission impossible 3, i have to say it was prob the best of them all. A slow start but pretty good action scenes 7/10

The ending was retarded... my gf who has seen Infernal Affairs said he movie was nearly the same thing... however, we both felt that the movie was very well acted... and for once in a movie, I didn't want Leo Dicaprio to die... I hate that dude especially in Titanic... he's real annoying
Matt Damon deserved to get shot

Jack Nicholson for Best Supporting Actor!
The Departed is definitely one of the better movies of the year!

Meh I was bored yesterday and watched You got Served.
I don't know I liked the dance scenes and all the rivalry, but other then that the movie felt generic in a way.The ending was predictable and so on .Not really the best movie, just the one you pass the time with .

Pretensive movies like you got served and this past summer's "Step up" irritate the fuck outta me. I only went to see it with my girl cause she liked the main character and i like her ass.

alright, well it's 4 aM and for some reason, I'm not asleep yet, so I'm going to name my top 3 favorite movies of all time (OF ALL TIME, not currently) and a reason for each. I hope you all do the same.
1. The Last Samurai- This may sound kinda sad, but honestly this movie is one of the few that changed my life. Not only do I like it because it has asian people in it (such a rarity in today's media. the few that are seen are all martial artists. I'll probably have a rant about this sooner or later) but the fight scenes are among the best I have ever seen. Wielding real swords in action, the one scene where the samurai scream after defending their villiage is just bone chilling. Pretty good story otherwise... I've taken a few of the philosophies from the movie and tried to apply it to my own life.
2. Malcolm X- What could I say? THis movie is the only other movie that's changed my life. Despite the fact that it came out in 1991 or 92, I saw it for the first time earlier this year. There have been many misconceptions of Malcolm X (especially those of him being a crazy radical black man) but the movie opened my eyes to a lot of things. First, I'm a huge Denzel fan, but I liked the stuff he did with Spike Lee (He Got Game, Inside Man)... and his performance of Malcolm is almost spot-on. AFter reading up in him and watching this movie, the few things I have heard about him were disregarded. What I took away from this movie and his life experience was that if you don't like the way things are, you always have the ability to try to change it... and I have also applied that to my life.
3. Sin City- In contrast to the first two, this one is here because of entertainment value, cinematics, and great storylines. In this star-studded cast, which includes Rosario Dawson AND Jessica Alba

are stories of guys who kill a bunch of people in order to get revenge for the women in their lives that have been wronged. I don't know, it's just something I can kinda relate to, not because I killed anyone, but because there are many girls in my life that I wouldn't hesitate to go through all that trouble for...
Sat Nov 04, 2006 1:55 pm
I have so many more but since 3 is the magic number...lets do it..."I Love this plan, i'm excited to be a part of it"-Bill Murray in Ghostbusters about crossing the streams
1. The Godfather...this movie is nothing but perfection. This is the first movie that showed me there was more to movies than guys getting hit in the groins with things being comedic gold. I like to think of myself as a pretty moral guy, especially when a first saw this movie. And then I found myself pulling for vito and michael...and my perspective on the world changed. I realized there are gray areas in life and that you can be a good person to your family and friends (well for the most part) yet be the most feared to everyone else. I also have an extreme loyalty to my family so i like that whole undertone in this movie. Also Michael's slow transformation into his father....Pacino always has and always will be Michael Corleone to me. I watched scarface and was confused because the whole time i was thinking "why does michael corleone have a cuban accent?"
2. RENT...*ducks to avoid the barrage of gay jokes* OK so i got dragged to this by a couple of girls. and i loved every fucking second. As soon as they threw the fire off their balcony onto the streets (because we all know realistic and safe that is)..i was hooked. I have yet to run into a musical whose lyrics hit me as hard as this one. I also had an eerily similar relationship like the one with roger and mimi....and the only difference is mine didnt involve heroin...but anyway....i know this isnt an accurate movie or that "great" film wise...but it hits home for me...its about hanging with your friends and trying to find love, yourself, and meaning in life...a message that reaches from 13 year olds up to 20 somethings...
3. Say Anything...*dodges more gay jokes*....I'm gonna admit right now i'm almost a Cameron Crowe fanboy..If you guys read the good news thread, i posted something about a girl in there. Think of me as Lloyd and her as Diane in this movie. Cusacks lines "I wanna get hurt!" and his sheer determination to not take no for an answer is me when i love a girl. And nothing beats the boombox scene......if you havent seen the two parodies by south park and colbert report check em out on youtube...crack me up everytime...
Sat Nov 04, 2006 2:34 pm
Iliini, if you think you have to duck to avoid gay jokes, wait untill you hear one of my favorite movies: Brokeback Mountain. That's right, bring it on, I'm not ashamed. Its a great, great film that really moved me, couldn't stop thinking about it for days, it really leaves its mark on you.
Heres' my top 10 in no particular order:
American History X- Edward Norton's performance in this movie is widely talked about, but is still one of the most underrated of all time. He won the Golden Globe for best actor (I think?) but the fact that he got snubbed at the Oscars is too bad. This movie is incredible in every way. A lot of people have their problems with it, but I guarantee they were on the edge of their seat the whole way regardless of what they thought afterwards.
Goodfellas- 10 times better then The Godfather in my opinion. Goodfellas has about 3 movies in one, and they are all very good. It is so incredibly fun to watch, and its a movie that never really gets old. Great performances by Joe Pesci, DeNiro and Ray Liotta.
Brokeback Mountain- Once again, say what you want, but anyone who's open minded enough and doesn't just like action movies should check it out. If you're mature enough to move past the 1 scene of gay sex, then you will really get the message of this movie and you won't be able to just watch it once.
Fargo- Been talked about in this thread, but this is yet another movie that never gets old. This movie is so incredibly good, and has so many different apeals to it. Its very dramatic, has a really dark story, but somehow the Coen brothers still make it hilarious. A Masterpiece.
Fight Club- You have 2 experiences with Fight Club (if you didn't already know the ending). The first time you watch it you are entranced and trying to figure out what's happening and what's going to happen. The second time, you watch it completely differently. I'm sure most of you have seen it, or already know the end, but I'm no Rosie O'Donnel, I'm not going to give it away.
Se7en- Oh god what a suspenseful movie. The scene with Kevin Spacey in the car on the way to get "the box" at the end is one of the best scenes ever. Brad Pitt reminds you in this movie that he's really a great actor, Morgan Freeman is... well Morgan Freeman, and the camera work and direction is outstanding, not to mention the script.
Reservoir Dogs- Best Heist movie ever. Incredibly groundbreaking, and really set the stage for Quentin Tarantino. The dialouge, the acting and the whole idea behind the movie is so great. This is another one you can watch over and over.
Pulp Fiction- We sort of discussed this one to death in this thread, but I stand by everything I've already said.
Hotel Rwanda- This movie is so hard to watch, which is the reason its the only one on this list that I don't own. Another one you won't be able to get out of your head.
Clerks- Funniest movie of all time. Period.
Just missed the cut: Blow, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, Philadelphia, Do the Right Thing, Office Space, 25th Hour, The People vs. Larry Flynt, Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind, The Matrix, Boondocks Saints and Requiem for a Dream.
Sat Nov 04, 2006 3:58 pm
Indy and I share a lot of common ground when it comes to movies
My top 3:
3: Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind: An incredible movie about love, regret, and forgiveness. With excellent performances from Jim Carrey and Kate Winslett, I've never seen such a bittersweet movie that ultimately gives us a stronger appreciation for relationships.
2: Forrest Gump: This was the only movie that made me literally sob. Forrest was a character that has a learning disability, but he deserved nothing but the best. He recieved everything a man could dream about, except for one thing, which he kept pursuing and never gave up on. He didn't care about anything worldly, but only cared about one thing that in his mind was love. Also a bittersweet movie, but it was ultimately the character that stood out above the rest.
1: Saving Private Ryan: I'm a little biased given that I'm a WWII fanatic, but aside from the realistic horrors of the greatest and most important war known to man, amid all the chaos, there were pieces of humanity that was shown in the characters. There was love, humor, bonding, and happiness despite being in a world of hate and hell.
Other movies that are excellent and are in no particular order:
Vera Drake
Garden State
American Beauty
Memento
American History X
V for Vendetta
The Usual Suspects
Schlinder's List
Fight Club
Reservior Dogs
Pulp Fiction
Snatch
Requiem for a Dream
Edit: Add
Irreversible, A History of Violence, and Shawshank Redemption to the list.

Eerie how many we 3 have in common...
well damn if you're giong to 10 i can add 7 more, but these are no particular order.
4. Edward Scissorhands-From the visuals to the story, i love this flick...so good yet so dark but at the same time accurate. I lived in suburbia growing up and didnt look like everyone else, and i got similar reactions to edward some days...and who doesnt live vincent price cameos?
5. Fear and Loathing in las vegas- while it just missed your cut...it definitely makes mine...you cant get much better than hunter thompsons wild escapades in vegas and then his take on them...the best line in the entire thing "hopefully his life would be ruined forever, thinking behind every closed door there were men in red woolen shirts getting impossible kicks from things he would never know" (paraphrased, i apologize for the misquote)
6. Donnie Darko- my friends all say i'm a goth kid wannabe but hey whatever...this flick pretty much similar to why i like edward: its visuals and its almost somber view on life, and i still dont get as many chills up my spine (as i do everytime i hear mad world from any movie) but this one...the acting is done superbly and the story while is scifi, almost makes sense and crosses over into philosophy, i love it
7. Chasing amy-while not nearly as funny as clerks or dogma, this movie to me is the perfect balance of drama and comedy, which is similar to my life...not much beats line slike "whats a nubian?" "does his mother tell him everything?" and "the other three are figments of your fuckin animation" also a semi bold statement on life and how our pereception of the world affects it...
8. Eternal Sunshine-Amazing, thats all there is to it. Carrey and Winslet do amazing jobs and act just as a couple in that situation would
9. Matrix-The original is so good, i always forget when i see it again how great it is...i always like reality challenging movies and this is one of them
10. V for Vendetta-Awesome...all i can say
Just missing the cut: Clerks, Ferris Bueller, Almost Famous, Princess Bride, Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Garden State, The Graduate

well, I said top three to prevent peple from writing novels for posts, but here goes:
4. Face/Off- For nostalgic purposes, this was my #1 for quite a long time... probably until a year or two ago. Epic battle scenes only in the way John Woo could do them, crazy sci-fi twists, amazing acting from John Travolta & Nick Cage (who's been to my work a few times), what's not to love about this movie?
5. The Butterfly Effect- Yeah, yeah, Ashton Kutcher... I know most people don't think highly of this movie, but I've always been intrigued with the idea of going back in time to change things. For this reason, the book Timeline by Michael Crichton is one of my favorites and I also enjoy watching the movie Frequency... they both have that "go back in time to change things" theme.
6. Spiderman 2- Well, the Spiderman movies are almost interchangable, but this is an inspiring movie. Every time after I finish watching it, I just feel like I want to be a better man, as corny as it sounds... makes me want to be someone's superhero.
7. Crash- A great eye-opening movie about race relations and relationships between people... hate to sound like a movie ad, but it's really a must-see if you haven't seen it already. great acting from a star-studded cast, including Terrence Howard, Brendan Fraser, Sandra Bullock, Michael Pen[<-with the squigly park on top]a, Don Cheadle, Ludacris, Ryan Philippe, the list goes on. Interesting note: Marvin Gaye's daughter is in this movie (as Brendan Fraser's assistant)
8. Forrest Gump- See cyanide's explanation above. A classic movie with perhaps the most quoted movie line "My momma always said, 'Life is like a box of chocolates... you never know what you're gonna get.'"
9. Rush Hour 2- Another one of those interchangable series, but yeah a really really funny movie if you're asian or black. White people might find it funny too, but not as much. Jackie Chan's stunts are still crazy (he slides through a slot of a cashier's window for crying out loud) and fight scenes are fun to watch.
hmm last one and still so many to mention...
10. He Got Game- "Jesus! Jesus!" This is strictly because it's a basketball movie with Denzel, directed by Spike and with Ray Allen. Pretty good storyline, i'm sure the recruiting stuff is pretty accurate... you get to see Rosario Dawson get felt up by Ray Allen. and the title track on the soundtrack. the song's called "He Got Game" by Public Enemy is a song I really like. you should check it out.
Very honorable mention: Boyz In the Hood (classic increase the peace movie), Friday, American History X, the original 3 Star Wars movies (Hey, the story was a good one), Jurassic Park, CITY OF GOD (If you have not seen this, I recommend seeing this ASAP), Harold and Kumar go to White Castle (again, Asians!), and here come the Denzel movies... Inside Man, Man on Fire, and Training Day

Hate to go off topic guys, but wanted to know how many people have watched Jackie Chan's HK movies? Back in the day when he was younger... my favourites were the Police Story ones

Saw Borat. One of the best movies ever. This flick rocks on so many levels, it isn't even funny anymore.
Sun Nov 05, 2006 8:00 am
Yea Borat was one of the better comedy's ive seen
I thought it was a great mix between Jackass and something that actually makes sense
Sun Nov 05, 2006 9:26 am
I just watched United 93... wow. It was intense. The movie was really well done, so much so that I wanted to get up and do something else several times because the movie was too intense.
Last night I saw Man of the Year. If you like Robin Williams, and/or political humor, its a great movie. Kind of simplistic plot line, but it kept my interest throughout.
Sun Nov 05, 2006 1:32 pm
I saw SAW III. Worst one of the series, imho. They must have been running out of good puzzles to kill people with.
I watched The Departed last night. Great cast, great movie. At almost every moment that you start to think it becomes predictable, something unpredictable happens.
If you like movies that spoof other films, then I suggest you see Disaster!. Filmed in stop animation with wax puppets, Disaster! spoofs disaster movies like Armageddon(mainly), Twister, and Volcano. Lots of violence, sex, an bad language.
Here are two clips from the movie.

How crap was it? Was it as gory as Saw II?
Sun Nov 05, 2006 2:13 pm
About the same, maybe even a bit more.
Sun Nov 05, 2006 2:17 pm
True, well, by the sound of what you said, it's must got a crap plot and 'puzzle'...
Sun Nov 05, 2006 3:22 pm
There is almost non-existant character development in this one, where in the other films you got to know the people before they bit it. Just heard there is going to be a Saw 4, scheduled for Halloween 2007.

Great choice!! I'm a big WWII fanatic as well. I prefer the band of brothers series over this to be honest, and I'm looking forward to the next band of brothers-esque movie to be made soon about the pacific theatre.
Just wondering Cy have you see 'the longest day'? It's a d-day movie which is real long and detailed which I want to check out. Any other decent WWII movies you've seen?
A good WW2 movie is the 'Downfall' - which is a german film about Hitlers and the Nazi's last days in the Berlin Bunkers. Lots of detail and well portrayed. Should check it out.
