First of all, ill point out that i am Short Sighted, meaning that i can see things in front of me, but i couldnt read something a few metres away to save my life.
I was just wondering if any of you knew how much this would affect/effect (for fucksake someone tell me which spelling is correct!) my overall game.. shooting, passing etc..
I know it would alter (avoiding using the ?ffect word) my passing as my vision from side to side wouldnt be as clear, but would it have an impact on my shooting, in regard to depth etc, how far i have to shoot the ball and the like?
And finally, does anyone on here require glasses on the court, and perhaps wears contact lenses during games? I was thinking about either playing the way im playing now, getting contacts, or in a few months, laser eye surgery (im 17 now, ill get it before im 18 - claim it on parents health care haha)
Opinions?

It's Affect. Affect is the verb.

i'm short sighted too. i wear contacts for most of my games, but occasionally forget. depends how severe your case is really, but i can't say i've noticed any negative side effects myself either way.

Oh good, i was hoping id speak to someone who wears them.. How do they go? Do you feel you play better with them in, and when theyre in, have you every had them fall out mid game or anything like that?
Would you advise??

I am slightly short sighted but I don't require glasses or contacts when I play but if you do get contacts there always is that slight chance you could cop quite a knock or a poke in the eye (hopefully not like Allen Ray) and lose them, you could get goggles like Kareem, Hakeem or Horace

they help in not losing em and we know what can happen with glasses, sometime they'll get broken. If you have the option of laser eye surgery that would be better, if its successful you'll be right for the long term, no glasses or contacts but I've heard there is that slight chance it wont work it will be clear for a little while then your vision will screw up again.
Good luck with it and all and speaking again about vision who is that babe in the avatar, she seems to be having fun

i've never had one fall out, no. it comes down to how moist your eyes are. if you have really dry eyes, they're not going to stick as well. i can't say i've noticed much difference in my game (then again i play shit anyway
), but as i said earlier, it will depend on how severe the problem is.

I wear contacts also when I'm playing games. Its not really a big deal and I never really had issues with them in a game .Sometimes when I'm not really into wearing contacts in a game I wear does special plastic sports glasses.Mostly because contacts make my eyes sore after a game.
So if you have no problem with contacts or glasses I say wear the one you prefer best .

I just realized I can't see anything well when it is more than three metres away from me...Do I have myopia or something similar? If yes, how advanced is it?
Fri Nov 03, 2006 1:41 am
^
Same with me, my vision has gotten worse over the past couple of years. I'm guessing its too much computer, because I have gotten less and less active by the week. Its really annoying not being able to see as well as I once could. I also heard that myopia is irreversible.... I sure hope not, because I wanna get this fixed.

Not to be a dick but does this have anything to do with the NBA?
Fri Nov 03, 2006 2:02 am
In an a attempt to make this thread more related to the NBA:
George Mikan was cut from his high school team because he was short sighted...

I wear contacts when I play, but other then that I'm too lazy to put them in. I don't have a really strong perscription, but its definitley noticable.
Fri Nov 03, 2006 5:19 am
i played with glasses for 6 years, broke many a pair...but many shots were made after uncalled fouls and they werent on, so i dont believe you blurriness of vision affects your depth perception...whether you can read it says "New balance" on a shoe or not, you still know the shoe is 3 feet away....
Fri Nov 03, 2006 5:25 am
yeah I used to be the same way... it was so bad that one time I was inbounding the ball and the other team was up in a full court press and I passed it to a guy on the other team. That was when I decided to invest in some contacts. Now I see perfectly
EDIT: I just saw this...

Not to be a dick, but it has nothing to do with the NBA. That's why it's not in NBA talk. Leave the moderating to us, thanks.

I need to wear glasses when I play because I have really strong spring allergies and having contacts would be pointless because I'd be taking them out like every minute....
I am hoping to get contacts perhaps at my next session or when I get older for laser surgery...
I don't play basketball as much, but for Ultimate we are outside most of the time, and its really hard to play in foggy and rainy weather.

I wear contacts when it comes to seeing the board in class when I'm kind of far back. But, as far as playing basketball, I don't even need them.

I knew there was a reason for my poor jumpshot, and now I have it!
Now time to convince the optometrist...

I wear contacts all the time b/c my eyes are that bad. Once you get used to them, you don't even notice you're wearing them. I do notice them when I sweat a lot and the sweat dries out my eyes, though.
Fri Nov 03, 2006 11:26 am
It's best to wear contacts during games since it affects your depth perception. Before contacts, I rarely played as sometimes I get hit in the face with the ball. Problem with contacts though is that some people aren't used to them. Some people are actually allergic to them. There are days when they hurt too when your eyes are irritated. So might think of getting those goggles that Kareem used to wear.

My vision is just a bit bad, If I sit in the back of the room I squeeze my eyes a bit to see the board, but for bball I can see the ball and the rim clearly, so it doesnt affect my game.

Oh yeah, just to add. I got eye surgery too. LASIK is what most people get nowadays and it works wonders. I had 20/20 vision overnight. Great feeling to see clearly again without any help from glasses or contacts.
Fri Nov 03, 2006 12:39 pm
Trust me man, contacts are no big deal. I've had them for about five years and have no problems. You just put them in in the morning and just take them out before you go to bed. At times you eyes get dry, but it's not a big deal. After awhile, you can hardly even feel the contacts in your eyes.
And by the way about LASIK, I would never sign a consent that I wouldn't sue them if they fucked up with my eyes or something. I am perfectly content with contacts for the rest of my life.

How much did your's cost? And how old are you, cause seeing as you got the surgery, it means the degrees and your eyes have stopped growing or something
