CHAPTER ONE

Sports Newspaper dated October 31, 2006

Earlier today..

David Stern, the commissioner of the NBA, announcedthat there will be a reset for all the rosters in each of the NBA teams. He said that the NBA will be doing a whole new NBA Draft before the season starts. Each team will be given a lottery number which will decide how they rank. David Stern commented regarding the new league draft, "Its basically the same as the yearly rookie draft but the only difference is that its the whole new league that's going to be drafted." The NBA teams were already informed of this and whether they like it or not it's gonna happen. A lot of teams were complaining about this proposed new system for the NBA like the:

Miami Heat
Dallas Mavericks
Phoenix Suns
San Antonio Spurs
Detroit Pistons

...and many others

While there were also teams who loved the new system. Teams like:

Atlanta Hawks
New Orleans Hornets
Utah Jazz
Portland Trailblazers
Charlotte Bobcats

...and many others

David Stern mentioned that it'll be a good entertainment for both the NBA and its fans. The team owner of the Charlotte Bobcats commented regarding the new system, "I think it's fine, it'll be good for the teams, a whole new bunch of players, new opportunities, but the only downside is that its like gambling you're old players for new ones and the Miami Heat won't like it".

The draft will be starting tomorrow and a lot of players will be moving from state to state.

Toronto Raptors . . . A Whole New Team

DAY ONE:

I was looking around the Raptors Practice Court and just curious about the players in their team. As I was peeping through a small window hole.. A tall white man in a pinstripe tuxedo approached me.. And said with a deep voice "Kid!..." At that moment my heart started pounding.. I didn't know what to do because they might think I'm a spy or something from another team or the media.. It wasn't open practice and they might fine me for being there and I don't have any money.. The guards might beat me up.. And I answered in a trembling voice. "Ummm..Wh..Whats up..?" And he continued..

"What are you doing here?"

I answered, "Umm..I was curious about the players I just wanted to see them live since I haven't seen them before. I loved the Raptors before and I love basketball. I hated the fact that they traded VC though."

The man chuckled and said.."I'm the new GM now..I won't be making those mistakes like the others did.."

After that.. I was calmed.. But shocked too since I didn't know it was the raptors GM.. I said.. "You have to make the Raptors a contender this year.. I love that team and i really want them to win a championship this year."

He said.."I do too but the problem is the team owner wants the team to be composed of only rookies and sophomores.."

I said.."What? Why would he want that?"

He said.."Because he thinks the franchise should aim for the rookies and sophomores this NBA League Draft and never change the rosters again after that so that they'll be a solid team after a few years to be able to get a championship."

All i could say was.."I think so too.."

The tall man asked me my name and gave me his business card. He told me to come by tomorrow to his office and he might have something for me.

Come nightime.. I couldn't sleep at all.. The only thing present in my mind was tomorrow.. I kept on thinking.. What would he want from a student like me.. I played NBA Live 07 on my PS2 because i couldn't sleep.. So i decided to play until tomorrow...

DAY TWO:

I woke up and surprised that i fell asleep.. I looked at the screen on my TV and the 1st quarter of the game ended with my team scoring zero.. And thought to myself.. Holy Sh*t.. I fell asleep just the 1st quarter of the game..

I took a shower and changed to my casual attire since i didn't have school today and i was planning to buy snacks since my frig is out of Lays and cokes already.. As i reached for my wallet in my other pants which i used yesterday.. I grabbed hold of a business card.. Oh! I almost forgot about this..

I immediately ran to my car.. Which was an assembled 1995 Wrangler Jeep without paint on it.. I started the car and took off to the office of the GM..

As i reached his office.. I asked the secretary and he phoned in to her boss and told me to go in..

The GM said to me.."Yken.. thats you're name right?"

I said.."Yes..My name is Yken Ong..I'm from the Philippines and I flew here to study college.."

He told me to just relax and don't be tensed.. He stood up from his managerial leather rotating chair and walked to the overlooking on his right side window..And said.."Do you like the Raptors?"

I immediately answered.."Yes..They're my favorite team.."

He looked at me eye to eye and said.."How'd you like to be a GM?"

I hesitated and asked.."I'd love to but I dunno how.."

And he smiled and said.."When i began my career as a GM..I also didn't know how to become one..As the years gone by i slowly became a GM both in mind and looks..Now i'm giving you an opportunity to become one has only dreamt of becoming..Do you accept it?"

I frowned and thought to myself..Why the heck would he want me to be a GM..It's his job and I dunno sh*t about being a GM.."

And he leaned closer..And said.."Cmon kid..The clocks ticking..."

I thought to myself..This is a great oppurtunity..I'd be able to buy myself a new car..new clothes..work a white collar job..and answered..."Yes..I accept..But first you have to tell me why you picked me.."

He stood up and said.."The moment i saw you outside that gym.. My instincts told me that this is the guy i leave my job with.."

I asked.."Why would you wanna leave you're job..It's a good job and it has a lot of benefits and advantages..I mean..You could see the players each and every game...Get to talk to them..Take pictures with them..Hang out with them..Make them you're friends..And many more..Why would you wanna leave this job..?"

He turned around and looked at the window again.."I'm not.."

I asked.."What do you mean I'm not..?"

He turned towards me and leaned forward.."I'm not leaving my job..You see..I got an offer from a team in Europe and they want me to be their GM..As much as i want too..I couldn't because of the contract i made with the raptors..The Euro team had offered me a lot of cash for it and they don't mind if i'm working for two teams as long as i do my job well..

Now..I already accepted their offer for me as long as they keep it on discreet..so i have no problem with them..But the Raptors wouldn't want me to work in another job other than this..Soo..I'm giving you my salary and you will be working as a GM but not on paper contract..What i mean is..The Raptors shouldn't know that you're doing my job..I already asked the Raptors if i could add an assistant GM and they said yes..Soo..I'm thought of hiring you..

Now I won't be doing anything with the Raptors..It's all up to you now..Just don't tell them about the European Team I'm gonna be working on..I always dreamt of becoming a GM for a Euro Team..So this is my calling..I'm only helping you as much as you're helping me okay..?"

And he shook my hand and said.."So..Is it a deal..?"

And i immediately answered.."Yes sir it is.."

And he gave me a credit card and told me that it was named after him and i was the extension..And gave me some papers which he said was from the bank and it was named after me and that the bank account had $20M in it..

And he said.."Hey Kid!! Don't forget to go to the practice tomorrow night and introduce yourself..You're office is right on the across mine so get the hell outta here and do your job..I have faith in ya kid.."

I answered..."Sir yes sir!!"

And he said.."Hey Kid..Tomorrow morning i'll be intoducing you to the staff...So don't forget..Before you go..Call me Bryan..Bryan Colangelo..Congatulations on your new job mister assistant GM.."

As i got outside his office i saw her secretary picking up the phone and talking to the GM on the other line.. After a few seconds before i reached the door knob on what is going to be my office.. The secretary smiled and said.."Mr.Ong..I'm gonna be your secretary now and here's you're schedule..Call me in the intercom whenever you need anything..What kind of coffee would it be..?

And i got that puzzled look on my face and thought to myself..Hey..I'm an assistant GM now and i have a secretary..And now i can finally say..How good it is to be me!!!..And i answered.."I don't drink coffee why..?"

She said.."Oh..I didn't know that..Soo..What would it be..? And how do you like your eggs..?

I looked down and said.."I like them better when they don't sag.."

And she giggled.."Cmon stop with the jokes sir you're making me look goofy..The eggs and coffee i meant were for breakfast..."

And my eyes widened..And i blushed and said in the quickest way possible.."A glass of milk and over easy eggs please thank you.."

And i eventually opened the door to my office and shut it and locked it..

Then my eyes grew even bigger when i saw my office..

It had a managerial desk and leather rotating seat with a sony vaio desktop computer on with a 20inch thin LCD and a sony vaio laptop beside it too..

And a Raptor Red Treo on the desk

A wood finished shiny wall with white leather trimmings...

A white leather cleopatra couch beside the overlooking windoe which dwarfed me when i stood beside it..

A beige carpet on..

A 60inch wall mounted LCD with ESPN2 showing in it..

A White leather couch, coffee table and chair set in front of the LCD..

And then i thought to myself again..It sure is great to be me..

After a while of reviewing my schedule..I noticed that the draft was going to be the day after tomorrow and tomorrow would be the selection of lottery numbers for each team..

As i was reading the schedules..Bryan called and said he was leaving for Italy tomorrow morning so he can't intoduce me to the other staff..And he said that there was no need for the introduction anyways..And told me to just shop for everything i need in the morning and not to bother going to the team practice since they're all gonna be dealt away in the lottery anyways..

So i went out the office building and proceeded to go to my car..As i was on my way to my car..A black bald bulky guy at about 6'6'' and 260lbs in a tux approached me and said.."Hi sir! I'm you're new bodyguard and driver..My name is Harris..Mr.Colangelo told me to drive you wherever you wanna go and to protect you in any ways possible..Mr.Colangelo told me you could use his limo..Soo..What do you plan on doing..?"

I said.."Umm..Okay..Let's head to the best restaurant in the city.."

DAY THREE:

I woke up early and prepared for a long day.. Wore my casual clothes.. And watched NBA TV on my 20" China branded TV.. After a few minutes.. Harris came and knocked on the door and said he'd be waiting in the car and to get in the car if it was time to leave..

I put on my almost empty Hugo Boss Cologne and went to the limo...

I asked Harris to drive me to the office..

I booted up the desktop PC and started looking in Amazon.com for some formal clothes and shoes i could buy so i'd look pleasing in the upcoming draft night..

I got myself a pinstripe coat and a red longleeved polo under it with a matchin blakc pinstripe tie and pants from ralph lauren.. And got a shiny black leather shoes..And a new Hugo Boss Cologne too..

And i added my schedules from the Raptors folder to my PDA..

And i slept in the office for a couple of hours..

And then the PDA Alarmed for the draft lottery number picking..

I went to the meeting.. Saw Stern and a lot of other GMs i could only see in TV..

Stern gave us the lottery number box and asked each one of us to get a number..

And not to tell the other GMs what number you got so that it'll add more thrill to the draft for tomorrow...

I didn't look at the number i got until i got to the car since i thought it would be good luck.. And yes!! It was... I got th enumber 2 lottery pick order.. I'm gonna be the second one to pick.. I sure am glad it's happenin..

DAY FOUR:

I couldn't sleep with the number two draft order number i got..

Who was i gonna pick first.. Morrison.. Gay.. Roy.. Foye.. Bargnani.. I got a lot in my mind.. I felt like my head was going to explode with all the choices..

I received an email from Bryan and he asked the number i got so he could be able to report to the team owner.. I gave him the info he needed.. And he said.. "I knew you were gonna be great with this...Good Luck!!"

It was draft night in Madison Square Garden... Harris and i were dropped off by the team driver since he said he won't be able to park the car if he drove it with all the crowd and everything.. It was my 1st time in Madison Square and in NY.. And it was huuuugee.... The crowd was goin crazy.. There were a lot of people.. I was nervous as hell when a fan yelled.. Raptors pick Roy!! And i eventually thought to myself.. God damn.. I almost forgot about the pick.. Who am i gonna pick!!

After the draft.. I had my first ever talk with an NBA player.. I talked with one of the players i have drafted.. I talked to Chris Paul.. And told him that it's good to have him on the team and i was lookin forward for him to be the playmaker for the raptors..

I also talked to the other players in the team.. I told them that the raptors love to have each of them on the team and there will be an immediate scrimmage the day after tomorrow to be able to see who gets the starting spots..

I slept well knowing that i got the players that the team owner wanted to.. And Bryan Colangelo also phoned in to congratulate me for drafting only rookies and sophomores for the team..

DAY FIVE:

Its staff hiring week and i have to find the best staff for the team because it also relies on them to train and develop the players especially now that the team is the youngest among the league and need mentors to guide them through their careers..

The first one i looked for was a good assistant who can be able to teach the players good offense and defense.. i got what i wanted with J. Carmona whose specialty is shooting and that really helps the team a lot.. then i wanted to looked for an assistant coach who has a league insider specialty so i would know the rumors around the NBA in the quickest possible way..

Here's the team staff:

Head Coach - Sam Mitchell

Assistant Head Coach:
Wilt Lawrence - League Insider - A-

Assistant:
Jose Carmona - Shooting Specialist - A+

Trainer:
Antonio Ribiero - F

Scout:
Alvin Soler - D

After I picked the team staff for the Raptors. The Team owner emailed me a message congratulating me for hiring a complete staff and wished me luck for the upcoming seasons.

After a few hours or so, Bryan Colangelo emailed me that i will be coaching the team. So i emailed him back and asked where Sam Mitchell was at. And all he said was I'm making you in charge of the whole Raptors Squad and I fired Sam because he didn't like to coach the team because it was a very very young team and he doubted that it was gonna make the playoffs.

After the emailing and organizing what I'm going to do for the next day, I asked Harris to drive me over to my house where i could get some rest and prepare the gym for the scrimmage the day after tomorrow.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

THE COMPLETE ROSTERS:
(Projected Starting Lineup. May change after the practices)

C - Andrew Bogut
PF - Andrea Bargnani
SF - Rudy Gay
SG - Adam Morrison
PG - Chris Paul

BENCH

C - Hilton Armstrong
SF - Rodney Carney
PG - Brandon Roy
SG - JJ Redick
PF - Tyrus Thomas
SF - Ronnie Brewer
PF - Renaldo Balkman

After i finalized the lineup. I phoned my secretary and asked her to send over some of the utility guys and make the gym as clean as possible and to put some trampolines on the gym with the new guys and their faces all over it for welcoming purposes. And as soon as i was done with all the work, i went to bed.

DAY SIX:

After i took a bath, I phoned each and every Raptor if they could all be at the practice later in the evening. All said yes and i was happy to have heard their answers. Out of curiousity, I phoned Bryan and asked him where the players would be sleeping since they didn't have any house here in Toronto. He told me that they were gonna be staying in a hotel until their newly constructed houses are done. Well.. That put me at rest..

I headed to the gym five hours before the practice.. I went early because i had to find a Raptors basketball gear for myself since i had none.. I went over to the gymkeeper Bobby Chase and asked him if something would fit me.. Luckily he had the perfect size for me.. It was a red raptors sweatshirt and matching sweatpants.. I took my white nike shox R4 from my car and suit up for the session.

I practiced a bit myself before the players came. I went jogging outside the gym and then proceeded to do some stretching. But as i was going to enter the gym.. I heard a ball bouncing and swishing through the net. The gym was pretty silent and you could almost here a pin drop. As i looked over, I saw Chris Paul doing some practice shots wearing the same sweatshirt as i was but he was wearing black nike reversible basketball shorts.

He spotted me and said.."Hey kid! Wanna help me with my practice shots? Go get me some more balls."

I took out a bag of balls and started giving it to him helping him practice his shots. After about 20 shots, Harris came in and said.."Boss, Mr. Colangelo is on the phone you wanna answer it.." I told him to hand me the phone and i talked to Bryan and he told me to welcome the players as nice as i could and to wosh me luck with the coaching.. And after i put down my phone, CP came over and asked me.."Why does that guy call you boss..?" And all i could say was.."I'm the assistant GM and your new coach" He blushed and immediately apologized about what he did earlier.. And i just told him that i was the coach so helping you practice is my job.. We just sat there laughing and telling jokes about each other while practicing shots..

After a few hours, a few others arrived.. Hilton Armstrong.. Adam Morrison.. JJ Redick and the others too..

I introduced myself and they responded well.. I began with a couple of stretching and jogging and eventually started a 5 on 5 scrimmage..

TEAM A (Red Practice Jersey)

C - Hilton Armstrong
PF - Andrea Bargnani
SF - Rodney Carney
SG - Adam Morrison
PG - JJ Redick

BENCH - SF - Renaldo Balkman

TEAM B (White Practice Jersey)

C - Andrew Bogut
PF - Tyrus Thomas
SF - Rudy Gay
SG - Brandon Roy
PG - Chris Paul

BENCH - SG - Ronnie Brewer

TEAM A won during the 8 minutes per quarter scrimmage with 45-40. Adam Morrison proved to be a solid scorer hitting from everywhere on the floor. JJ Redick also was a solid outside provider hitting jumpers but lacked a lot on defense. Andrea Bargnani also proved his worth with the help of his shooting touch hitting close range shots. The three white boy shooters were a good triangle offense. Rodney Carney also hit shots from beyond the arc but i wanted to see him drive more to the basket. And Hilton Armstrong was a good defender but lacked offense. Renaldo Balkman helped TEAM A with his outstanding hustle and rebounding skills.

While on the other hand, TEAM B was also a great team. Chris Paul was their floor leader and was very effective playing his role. He didn't put up many shots though but instead gave the others good assists. But every shot he chucked up went down. He only attempted about six shots. Andrew Bogut was a great provider for TEAM B. I was surprised to see his aggressiveness.. It was a different Andrew Bogut i've seen since last season. He did putback jams instead of offensive rebound tip ins. I loved the aggressiveness he showed me. Tyrus Thomas was a great pick too. I picked him over LaMarcus Aldridge and it showed that he wanted to be drafted higher. He did all the necessaries for TEAM B. Grabbing rebounds, defending, dunking, shooting, and hustle. He knew where to be positioned in the offensive and defensive sets. Brandon Roy played like he wanted to win the rookie of the year award. He did what he was supposed to do, defended well and he scored a lot of shots but lacked the extra pass.

Rudy Gay became my favorite because he showed me his athleticism and explosiveness at the right time. Whenever he was open, he would windmill it. Whenever he was closely guarded he would pass the ball and look for an open spot. He blocked a lot of Armstrong's shots and showed potential to be an effective inside defender. Ronnie Brewer burned, he didn't hit open shots, tended to fade away from a defender and force hard shots. But I see potential in him.. He just needs to improve his work ethic.

Before the practice was over, i asked my chef (my mom) to make pizza and pasta for the players.. They enjoyed the pasta and pizza and they told me it was rare that a coach would treat them that well.. I just told them that i was different and i'm 20 years old same as them so i know what they want and have the same ideas as them for fun too.. They all just laughed and told jokes and we all ended up laughing our a**ess off for three hours or so..

Before we parted ways.. Ronnie Brewer came and talked to me as i was on my way to the limo.. He said "Coach..I'm sorry i couldn't perform well today..I hope you don't loose trust in me..It's just that i'm not consistent enough..Sometimes i play well and sometimes i don't..I hope you could still give me a chance.."

I pitied the guy and said.."you know what "RB", I didn't loose trust in you..I have faith in ya and i know that you'll do everything you can to help the team..Just don't worry about anything and try to practice more to improve your consistency okay..You're one of my go to guys in the team.."

He answered.."Thanks coach..I didn't really expect that but thanks..You really warmed my heart.."

After i got home, i phoned my secretary and told her to release to the press that the assistant GM of the Raptors guaranteed that they are gonna go to the playoffs..

The list of rosters i asked from my secretary were really useful since it is where i should base my practices from. I told my assistant to practice them on defense and athleticism this pre season because offense will come in later when the defense is established well already..Everybody in the team can shoot well so there's no problem with offense..They just need to get along with each other for their offense to work..Touch ups are needed for some of my players' shooting and court poitioning but it was easy when they already bond with each other..

From the list i saw, i was shocked because we were the underdogs of the league..But we also had an advantage since the other teams don't know what my players were capable of doing since they haven't played in the NBA yet other than Andrew and CP..So they don't know what we were capable of doing..

After an hour of reviewing the roster lists and scheduling the practices the team will be doing..I received an email from Bryan saying that he has scheduled me for an interview with Vito Lazatin from Solar Sports..It was a sports channel in the Philippines and i was glad to do it..and after that was an interview with Ahmad Rashad of NBA TV..

I suit up for the interview wearing a blue long sleeved polo and black slack pants with bright yellow tie and formal shoes to go with it..i also put on a Toronto Raptors pin emblem in my right chest to resemble the raptors..

As they arrived in the office..I let them sat down and we talked about the questions they were gonna ask me and what questions they wouldn't ask me..I just told them to turn on the camera and ask all the questions they wanted to since i don't like scripted interviews..

Vito asked me about the comment i made earlier that we were gonna be in the playoffs..

I answered.."Yes, i believe we have all the right tools to ensure a playoff spot..The players are looking good and the staff is doing well so there's no problem with the team.."

Vito: What do you think about this new system of the NBA

ME: I think it's great..It's a challenge for both the players and the teams..but the downside is that it's like gambling and you don't know what's going to happen next..

Vito: What do you think about the draft?

ME: We were lucky that we get to be the second in the draft order because we were really in need for fresh and talented guys for the team..

Vito: A lot of fans were furious because of the choices you made..why did you choose Chris Paul as the 2nd pick instead of Lebron or Wade...?

ME: I did what i was told to do..the association wanted younger players and a fresh team..

Vito: Now that your coaching them what do you think of the players you acquired..?

ME: CP has been their leader..They all respect him as their captain and floor general..Andrew Bogut has made some good changes..The rooks played well..They gave me more than i expected..And i really think we have a shot at the playoffs..Thank You..

NBA TV Interview:

NBATV: So do you really think the Raptors can ensure a playoff spot?

ME: I do..We all do..The players are improving and are already ready for the NBA..All the teams are rebuilding so all the teams are at par this season..

NBA TV: What type of offense does the new Raptors play in..?

ME: The Raptors now play at a very uptempo game..They have youth and speed..They're all quick and i think we are gonna be playing a rocket fuel game..

NBATV: So you plan to run and gun?

ME: We plan to run gun and defend the basket at the same time..Like i said..We have the quickness and the speed to do everything we want to..We just need to start to gel with each other and i think we already have progress at that..

NBATV: What are your future plans for the Raptors?

ME: If the owner permits it..I'm planning on renaming the team as The Toronto Turbines..It resembles their offense, defense, and their personalities on the court..I'm also planning to change their uniforms before the season starts to warn the opposing teams that this team is not the same raptors team before but is a new team now..

NBATV: That's all..Thank You

ME: Thanks..

I forgot to say, great writeup, interesting that you have no players with more than 1 year of experience, and only 2 at that. All of these guys have potential to be very good though.

Flite23:
yup..i really wanted to have a team where all the players would be rooks and sophs who were gonna try to take a shot at winning the championship if they get along with each other..its kinda interesting to see how things are gonna go..thanks for the comment bro.

23Lebron:
thanks for the comment bro..ey you guys think i shouldve picked aldridge over tyrus thomas?

Jing:
No waay man..Sit was way way better than me..I followed his dynasty in 06 and it was off the hook..I just created this out of imagination..I don't have a script..I just sit in my computer and write them down based on the games the team plays..thanks for the comment..

I don't know why, but as many times as I tried the fantasy draft on 07, every time Kobe was in the same team with Nash, I see it's the same on your dynasty...

Those are excellent.. Thanks for lookin out bro.. Those are really amazing.. I thought the original colors would be better too.. Thanks a lot bro.. And the logos are nice but can i suggest u make the logo more like turbines.. Like the "TR" Logo of the Raptors but the designs of the pistons logo before.. Kinda like mufflers of a chopper bike.. Oh bro.. Where can i download this anyways.. Theyre soo amazing..

Zoom
Thanks bro.. I'll be updating it as soon as I get the jerseys from Fransmansr.. So i can continue with the screens and photos..
