LOS ANGELES, Calif. (AP) -- Kurt Rambis is calling it a problem. Many would call it a disaster. The story of the Lakers’ on-going injuries keeps getting deeper as Lamar Odom and Smush Parker were the latest players to join the long list of sick players.
Parker was injured early in the third quarter and Odom went out exactly 10 minutes later; both of them being diagnosed with hyper-extended elbows. “This is not good,” Aaron Mckie stated, “Everyone is hurt in the camp. I’m battling one myself but because of all the guys slowly going out, I’m playing hurt.”
With star player Kobe Bryant not looking like he will be ready until at least the season opener, the loss of Odom and Parker hits the team hard. In addition to this, Chris Mihm, Kwame Brown and Von Wafer are going to be staying out until after the regular season starts. Sasha Vujacic has only just returned to training while Shammond Williams is also on the mend.
“It’s an absolute nightmare,” Assistant Brian Shaw said, “Who would have thought this would happen?”
The loss of two more players only dampened the atmosphere even more as the Phoenix Suns ran away with an easy win in which they led the whole way through from the start. The Suns opened strong and led by 26 at half time. A Lakers’ come back was cut short after they had gone on a 12-0 tear. That was when Parker was injured and all momentum was lost by the Lakers who allowed the Suns to rebuild their big lead and get in front by as much as 20 points.
Shawn Marion led the way with 19 points, 20 rebounds and 4 assists while Kurt Thomas came off the bench to register 18 points and 23 rebounds. Steve Nash was strong as ever with 19 points but failed to register more than 1 assist in 24 minutes. Marcus Banks proved he was a great acquisition for the team as he chipped in 17 points, Boris Diaw added 16 while Amare Stoudmire was solid as he finished with 10 and 12 in 15 minutes.
Lamar Odom had a terrible scoring night shooting just 3 for 15 from the field and finishing with just 6 points. He found other ways in helping the home side and grabbed 13 rebounds and handing out 7 assists. Vladimir Radmanovic led the team in scoring with 19 points. Luke Walton and Maurice Evans both impressed the Lakers. Walton scored 12 points, 6 rebounds and 3 assists while leading the team on the floor. Evans had 17 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists as he held Raja Bell to 1 of 10 shooting.
“Evans was great tonight,” Kobe Bryant said, “I think that he can start at guard for a while and he will do a great job in it!”
Game Notes
Andrew Bynum was solid grabbing 10 rebounds and blocking 4 shots; his mentor Kareem Abdul-Jabbar had recently said, “He (Bynum) need so play defence, it’s his job.” It seems that the soon-to-be 19 year old is beginning to do the job… Phil Jackson has stated he should return to the sidelines soon… Kobe Bryant has yet to make a decision on when he will play… The only 100% healthy players for the Lakers are Andrew Bynum, Brian Cook, Ronny Turiaf, Luke Walton, Maurice Evans and Jordan Farmar…

Otherwise, good presentation again. Those injuries were deffinately unfortunate, but hey, makes the game more challenging.

Yeah, it was sorta half my fault cause I missed shots on purpose to not let the score infalte itself... I'm gonna play less minutes even if it screws up the stats... And yeah man, I will turn lighting up a bit more next game

LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- In an abrupt announcement, Aaron McKie retired from the NBA after 12 years of service. The veteran combo guard has had a tough time returning from an injury that ruled him out of most of last season. Despite saying he would play hurt to keep the injury-ridden Lakers, McKie decided to quit so that he could help both sides.
“I thought about it (retiring) and I thought that for my body’s sake, I should just hang up the jersey,” McKie addressed a modest number of journalists, “I think it is the best thing for both myself and the (Lakers) organisation. Now they can go out and pursue a player who can really step in and help out more than I could.”
A native of Philadelphia, it is expected that he will be offered a job by the Lakers to join the coaching staff. General Manager Mitch Kupchak hinted at this, “We would like Aaron to be able to work with the young guards on our team as they all need a bit of direction with playing their position. Aaron was a great influence in our locker room and it was a shame that injury has cut his career short.”
McKie was a high school star for Simon Gratz High School in Philadelphia where he led his team to the Public League championship while averaging 19 points per game, 10 rebounds per game and 7.7 assists per game. He later played for Temple and is tied sixth on the school’s all-time scoring list.
He was later drafted as the 17th overall draft pick by the Portland Trailblazers in the 1994 NBA Draft. McKie is more famous for his playing days in his hometown of Philadelphia where he was an important part of their run to the NBA Finals in the 2000-01 NBA season. McKie often backed up Allen Iverson and Eric Snow at both guard positions and won the NBA Sixth Man of the Year award that season.
After joining the Lakers last season, he came down with injury and sat out most the season. This preseason, he is averaging 4.5 points, 2 rebounds and 11 minutes in 2 games played.

Focus your attention on Bynum, make him the real next Shaq, I think you should keep the core of Bynum, Odom, Kobe and Jordan Farmar. Those are the only players i would keep on this team, build off them. But its up to you. Make Bynum a star!

Maybe... injuries crippled him when he was with the Lakers and at the end of his run with Philly he was already slowing down quickly... but his leadership off the court has helped LA keep him in real life until now...

I don't think much of Bynum yet and Farmar either... the focus is on making the role players play well... and Odom and Kobe co-existing... Odom scoring points, Kwame and Mihm playing good defence and rebounding and stuff while Walton plays awesome

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- The crippled Los Angeles Lakers take on a full strength outfit in the Sacramento Kings at home tonight. The Lakers are missing several players including last season's top three scorers; Kobe Bryant, Lamar Odom and Smush Parker.
In their fourth preseason game, the Lakers will be playing a 7 man roster after Aaron Mckie recently annoucned his retirement. Vladimir Radmanovic also has a minor injury to his hand but will play due to the lack of numbers for the Lakers. It is expected that the Lakers will play their young players and rookie Jordan Farmar in particular.
The Kings remain unbeaten after a big win over the Golden State Warriors in Oakland and are looking to continue that with their visit to California. Ron Artest has led the Kings admirably by putting in the extra work on both ends of the floor. His tenacious defence held Jason Richardson to just 12 points and he was just as good on attack with 24 points in 30 minutes.
The Lakers are coming off their second straight loss in which they fell to the Phoenix Suns. Odom and Parker were both injured in the encounter. For many young Lakers though, it has given them the chance to woo the the coaching staff. It is expected that this game will allow Luke Walton the chance to keep the starting small forward spot off Radmanovic while Farmar will be attempting to prove that he deserves to stay in the rotation for the regular season.

LOS ANGELES, Calif. (AP) -- Sasha Vujacic was a game day decision and the reward for allowing him to play was greater than expected for the Los Angeles Lakers. As the other Lakers swingmen struggled, Vujacic lent a hot hand in carrying the Lakers from behind and cementing their position in front of their opponents.
Vujacic scored 18 of his game high 31 points in the first quarter including three straight treys just minutes after coming off the bench. The Lakers took a commanding 12 point lead at the end of the first quarter before expanding that lead to 20 points midway through the second period. The Sacramento Kings kept fighting back but their runs were always cut by Lakers three pointers as the home side shot 13 for 18 from long range.
“Our long range shooting definitely won us the game,” Kurt Rambis said, “We did really well considering the circumstances this team is in. The Kings are always tough to beat and a big win shows that we have a lot of heart.”
The Lakers have six players on the injured list; more than they can handle. Kobe Bryant was rumoured to be able to play but it was confirmed that the superstar Laker wasn’t ready. “I will most probably be playing by the season opener but I wouldn’t count on it,” Bryant told media as he watched his team mates.
Six Lakers scored in double figures and apart from Vujacic, it was the front court of Ronny Turiaf and Andrew Bynum who impressed coaches the most. Turiaf finished with 10 points and 14 rebounds while Bynum finished with 12 and 10. Luke Walton was held to 5 for 14 shooting by Ron Artest but still had 14 points and 7 assists. Rookie Jordan Farmar made a strong bid for a starting spot on the team with 12 points and 7 assists.
