Once again Videnov wasn't enough

Dream Team rolls past Team Bulgaria
by Alexander Sotirov, BulgarianBasket.com
Team USA overcomed Bulgaria with a 21-point margin - 102:81, in one really attractive and uptempo game. In front of 17.500 spectators, coach Larry Brown started the game with Allen, Iverson, Dwyane Wade, Richard Jefferson, Amare Stoudermire and Tim Duncan. His opponent Rosen Barchovski, relied on guards Filip Videnov and Yordan Bozov, forwards Todor Stoykov and Boyko Mladenov and center Tencho Banev. Boyko Mladenov stepped out after 4 minutes of play with a sprained ankle, and Dimitar Anguelov, who is only 202-cm tall stepped up as a power forward for the rest of the game. The best player on the floor for the Bulgarian team once again was Filip Videnov. The former WK Hilltoper scored a team-high of 29 points. Tencho Banev and Todor Stoykov both had 10 points, as the 210-cm tall center, added 6 rebounds. The starting PG Yordan Bozov scored 15 points and dished off 6 assists, and Dimitar Anguelov had 13 points off the bench. For USA RJ scored a game-high of 32 points, and Dwyane Wade was the game's disappointment scoring only 8 points.

Filip Videnov : "I saw the real thing in Real Madrid"
by Alexander Sotirov, BulgarianBasket.Com

How are you, how are you feeling in the National team, after you haven’t been together since last September?
-Actually I feel really nice. I’m always very happy when it comes time for a training camp with the National team. We know each other real good with all the boys, we’re friends.Maybe in one week it’ll be different, we’ll converse harder, because everyone will feel dully from the fatigue and the boredom here. On the first camp in Albena we emphasized physical training. We play more basketball, and the athletic training is less now. We spend more time in the gym.

How do you estimate the new guys on the team?
-We’re nearly the same guys from last year. New face is only Hristo Nikolov. Asen Velikov will join us later.

What should we expect from the National team in the qualifications?
-It’s obligatory for us to win the games at home, and also the most away matches. We have bigger and better chances compared to last year. It will be a retreat if we not qualify.

Is the National team better since the participation in Eurobasket 2005 in Serbia?
-I personally think that we are better. Many of the boys went to play abroad, and performed good. Those who stayed in Bulgaria, also showed some great stuff with their teams. The fact that we played in a European Championship, gives us better self-confidence. I think that we have a good feature ahead of us.

And do you feel yourself better?
-Definitely. Maybe not in physical, but in mental aspect.

Your summer had a tempestuous start for you. The great start of the season in Turkey was followed by a transfer in Real Madrid. You’re a free agent now. Is it hard now, when you don’t have a team?
-Of course it’s hard. I feel worried. The question is not if I’ll find a new club – I have no doubt about that. I hope to get into a team, who should respond to my requests. But I think that this fact is motivating me additionally for the qualifications.
I had a chance to stay with Tekelspor, but I decided to leave, because this team is not coinciding with my ambitions.
I’m talking to my manager all the time. He’s looking for a new team for me now. That isn’t an obstacle for my preparation with the National team. Our goal is to qualify for Eurobasket 2007 in Spain. Our rivals in the group are Poland, Sweden and Ukraine. We can do this. I don’t think that it will be any heroism. I can feel, that I’m currently away from the limit of my potential. I hope to get in one good team next year, where I could still learn some things. My stay in Real Madrid wasn’t bad at all. You know, I saw the real thing in Madrid, I felt what it is to be in a really great team.

How’s your wife Ina doing?
-She’s doing good, thanks. Now she’s in Ruse, finishing her university studies. We talk all the time. I’m very grateful to her, for all the support, for everything she does for me. Everything’s easier with her support.

Since when have you been together?
-We’ve been together for 8 years now. We married in December 2004. We met in high school in Ruse, and we live together from almost then. When we are in Ruse we are with her parents, and when we are in Kozloduy, we are with my parents. We’re not rushing to buy our own home, because we’re abroad all the time. I haven’t thought were I could lay down…maybe in Ruse.

Are you thinking about children?
-We aren’t, but if it happens, It’ll be ok.

Isn’t Ina disappointed, from the fact that you are not going on a holiday, but on a camp?
-It’s like that for third summer in a row now. We got used to it. For me with the hard work, every day passes fast. It must be a little bit harder for her.

You are a well-known name, but in Bulgaria there still is lack of information about you. What kind of a person Filip Videnov is?
-A person who seese life in the real way. I’m very calm, I don’t like arguing. I definitely have not accustomed to be center of the media attention

How do you relax?
-Like every young person – I go to the disco, when I have spare time, I read books, I watch movies. I prefer comedies.

Who’s your closest friend on the team?
-All of the guys are my friends. Only Mitko Angelov isn’t because…(“Because I beat him 1 on 1” says Angelov, who passes by) I’m joking of course.

The season in the NBA ended with a less unexpected champion – Miami Heat. Was that a surprise for you?
-Actually yes, even that I was for Miami in the finals. I expected more from Detroit, because they played really nice during the season. I expected that Dallas will win the final, but Miami showed up as the better team. As a fan, I’m glad that Miami won.

It seems like the popularity of the NBA in Europe has decreased in the last few years. Is the NBA going through a crisis?
- The drop isn’t because NBA is going through hard times, it’s simply that the European club basketball is getting more popular every year. You see that in the clubs are coming a lot of very strong players, such as Americans, and many others. The championships are interesting and it’s normal that the people are more interested in their local championship than in the NBA. In the NBA before the Playoffs the season is honestly boring.
