yea man i watched the game... it was horrible. Yi played subpar and Sun was just horrible. I did see Yao and Wang laughing their asses off on the bench earlier in the game.

Chen though showed promise, earlier in the game he got inside the lane with no problem and had a couple sick layups

Yeh man! The Chen dude is only 17... showing quite a lot of promise... PGs like him are rare in Asia... bet he probably streetballs heaps lol... how quick is he?

And sucks Yao and Wang wasnt there... still... the aim is to win a medal in beijing.. i will be content if China makes the Top 16.. anything else is a bonus!

Watching highlights of China-USA... well.. if only the chinese didnt fall over as much. With the Brazil-USA game.. shows how much the rest of the world is actually getting at bball... to only lose by 4 to a full strength USA team is quite impressive and the knockout stage of the WC is definitely gonna be hell exciting! (Y)

Oh yeah... im a bit pissed to see Melo go down injurewd.. hope its not serious... i love how hes playing for USA and i got my money on him as USA top scorer. Anyways... USA struggled without him and that should show people why and how much of an important and good player he is. :)

Chinese Upset Lithuania in Double Overtime
China Advances At Expense of Sarunas-less Lithuania

CHN: 21 - 21 - 20 - 22 - 12 - 18 - 114
LIT: 19 - 24 - 14 - 27 - 12 - 11 - 107

JAPAN (AP) -- In a thrilling match up between Asian Champions China and European powerhouse Lithuania, the game lasted to double overtime with the Chinese summoning the energy to outlast their opponents in the end.

C Yao Ming led his team with 38 points (18-26 FG, 2-8 FT), 20 rebounds (6 of them offensive), 7 assists and 5 blocks. C Wang Zhizhi’s returned to national duty by starting the game and giving China a boost in the two overtime periods. The big man scored 20 points (9-28 FG), 14 rebounds and 7 assists and was inspirational to the team after scoring three straight buckets in the second overtime. The two big men were supported by PF Yi Jianlan coming off the bench to score 18 points and 7 rebounds and PG Wei Liu who finished with 16 points and 7 assists.

PG Vidas Ginevicius led Lithuania with 30 points, 11 rebounds while SG Ramunas Siskauskas added 25 points. The two gave the Chinese a lot of problems with their shooting and quickness. The Chinese guards couldn’t keep up on defence nor could the big men stop them from getting around them for lay ups and passes. In the paint, PF Robertas Javtokas grabbed 14 rebounds and helped play great defence on China’s Zhizhi. NBA player Darius Songaila stepped up in overtime to score 10 of his 16 points. He also had 9 rebounds and 5 assists.

The Chinese played impressively although they only showed patches of good promising play while also playing some stretches without much motivation or hunger. Jonas Kazlauskas, coach of China, wasn’t impressed with his team as they showed more poor basketball than good throughout the game.

The former Lithuania Coach was happy about knocking off his home-country but later conceded that China may not have deserved to win when looking back at the start of the game, “We played very poorly in the beginning. Maybe we’re not meant to be winning and Lithuania should have gone thorough. But Wang Zhizhi and Yao Ming helped us get it done in the overtime and that’s what counts.”

China and Lithuania kept it close for the first half with China going to Yao Ming down low in the post. The Houston Rockets big man scored 14 of his 38 points in the first half. Siskauskas led Lithuania with 15 at the break and with Lithuania ahead by 1.

After a long talk in the dressing rooms, China came back out pumped. Lithuania decided to double team Yao Ming and Ming played a great game of passing out to his perimeter shooters. The Chinese took advantage of their open shots, especially SG Li Nan who scored all of his 8 points at the start of the quarter. Li scored back to back three pointers while Yao racked up 4 assists in just 5 minutes as China took the lead of the game.

China stayed ahead for much of the quarter and then building the margin up to 13 points before they began complacent. A handful of treys from Ginevicius and Lithuania were back in it with just under a minute to go. Ginevicius made a driving lay up to put his team up by two before Yao slammed a shot home. Yao then swatted a shot attempt by Javtokas but Wang Zhizhi missed an open layup and Sun Yue’s shot was waved off by the match official.

Overtime began with Songaila making two floaters in the lane and China struggling. After falling behind by 6 points, China called a time out to fix the problem. With that, they went to Yao who scored on a finger-roll, then blocked a shot on the other end leading to a fast break. Yao got the ball from Sun Yue for the dunk and Yao later scored another close shot to tie the score.

The first overtime period cumulated with China edging in front of the Lithuanians after a Wang Zhizhi put back with 36 seconds left. Lithuania ran the clock out before Siskasukas went for a shot. His missed but Javtokas grabbed the rebound and passed it to Songaila who hit the game tying shot as time expired.

The second overtime was then evenly matched by both teams but then with 3 minutes left, Wang Zhizhi showed people why Coach Kazlauskas had kept him in the game. The 7’1” giant went on a tear as he scored 7 straight points. 4 off the fast break and a three pointer and along with a Yao Ming dunk, China got away with the win.

Wang who is concerned about his immediate club future was extremely happy, “I’m not sure if I will play in the CBA or maybe somewhere else but all I’m hoping for now is that I play well.” Coach Kazlauskas was pleased with Wang, “For his first game back, he was rusty but I was happy he could help win the game at the end.”

Two More Through, Two More Beaten
One Major Upset as Nigeria Steals the Limelight!

By WILL SIT, AP Writer
August 27, 2006

JAPAN (AP) -- Nigeria are set to play Greece in the next round after upsetting European power Germany in a 90-86 upset. NBA star Dirk Nowitzki played a horrible game finishing with just 12 points and 9 rebounds. His mistakes on offence cost the Germans dearly as he misfired on 4 for 11 shooting. His biggest mistake was taking a three pointer with three Nigerian players on him with his team mates open under the hoop.

Nowitzki left the stadium quickly, refusing to speak to reporters but the German players were more than happy to share their feelings and emotions. C Patrick Femerling scored 20 points and grabbed 6 rebounds. He said, after the game, “I don’t know if playing in the NBA does this to you but he is a lot cockier than last year we played together. I feel like he doesn’t trust us (team mates) any more.”

PG Pascal Roller scored 16 points, 3 rebounds and 5 assists was also disappointed with his German team mate Nowitzki. “I remember when we won silver (at the Eurobasket) last year and it was a great feeling. He (Nowitzki) was a leader but now he isn’t. I don’t know what happened.”

Nigeria certainly put in a team effort as they were led by PG Kingsley Ogwudire’s 20 points and 7 assists. All of their starting five scored in double figures. The Nigerian coach was very pleased with the result, “We are just happy to be here. We beat Germany so that is a very good result.”

PF Ekene Ibekwe, who plays college basketball for Maryland in the NCAA, chipped in an impressive 12 points from off the bench. He was happy to help his team win, “Germany are a very good team. They have a NBA star and a lot of good players. We were very fortunate to beat them and also maybe very lucky to catch Dirk Nowtizki on a bad shooting day.”

The Germans and Nigerians kept level for much of the game before Nigeria took advantage of the slow pace to set up a small lead. With 45 seconds left in the game, Ogwudire dished off a nice pass inside to Ibekwe who put the ball in softly to create a slim 2 point lead. Nigeria sent an aggressive triple team at Dirk Nowitzki down in the corner of the court. The German threw up an ill advised shot and the ball didn’t even touch the rim. With that, Nowitzki walked off the court, calling his own substation before the Nigerians’ SF Awojobi made a shot to ice the game with 7.4 seconds left. Germany’s Roller then missed a shot at the buzzer.

Nigeria now advances to play Greece.

Greece 93, Puerto Rico 82

PF Sharif Fajardo scored 20 points and C Peter John Ramos added 17 points, 8 rebounds and 5 assists as their Puerto Rican side fell victim to Greece. NBA PG Carlos Arroyo struggled on 3 for 11 shooting and finished on 9 points and 2 assists. SG Nikolaos Chatzivrettas led Greece with 23 points, 5 rebounds and 3 steals. PF Antonis Fotsis added 20 points and 8 rebounds for Greece in a game where they led from start to finish.

Two Come From Behind Wins Excite Crowd
Azzurri and Tall Blacks Win Thrillers

By WILL SIT, AP Writer
August 28, 2006

JAPAN (AP) -- Italy made the next round after coming back from 13 points behind to win against South American force Brazil. As big as that upset win was, it was New Zealand who took FIBA fans back to their 2002 campaign as they upset Tony Parker and France.

To the delight of fans, the ‘Tall Blacks’ won on a last second three point shot from star guard Kirk Penny. The Maccabi Tel Aviv player redeemed himself after missing a long jumper that would have tied the game with 11.6 seconds left. Tony Parker got the ball and dribbled up the court before Penney stopped him at half way. The New Zealander then quickly hit the ball out of Parker’s reach before the New Zealand players came quickly back down the court.

Sean Marks failed to get an open look and desperately passed the ball out to Penney who went up for the shot at the edge of the perimeter. The ball swished in with just 0.7 seconds left on the clock to the loud cheer of the New Zealand-pro crowd.

Penney pointed to the sky as his team mates lifted him up as the French left the court.

Penney scored 16 points and had 6 assists while NBA player Sean Marks top scored with 22 points. Pero Cameron made himself useful in the paint by grabbing 13 rebounds and Mark Dickel added 18 points and 2 steals.

The French were indeed shocked after having led for most of the game. Tony Parker played terribly as he finished with just 7 points on 2 for 14 shooting. Captain Boris Diaw also played poorly as he finished with 11 points and 4 rebounds. The French team was led by Mickael Pietrus’ defence and 14 points and 8 rebounds. His older brother Florent led France’s scoring with 19 points.

Coach Baldwin of New Zealand was wary of their next opponent in Italy, “They (Italy) will be just as good as France were tonight. We need to be very careful against them.”

Back home in New Zealand, there were at least two very ecstatic fans. The first was Mark Moore who bet his life savings on the game and was on the local news station saying, “If Tony Parker screws up, I’m loaded.” The local betting agency refused to pay Moore the money he won so he attacked the other patrons in the building. In (not-so) nearby Brisbane, Australia Andrew Watson has decided to take the whole week off work after the Kiwi win. He later told Reuters, “I’m pretty stoked we won. Now I can get a few cold beers and relax.” When asked about his work he said, “The boss told me to stay away for as long as I want and said that he wasn’t leaving my place for me at the firm!”

That result just brought a big smile to my face, as that's exactly how I foresee NZ's tournament going (although Sean Marks won't be there to pass the ball) :P
