Game #29:

ImageImage

Orlando Magic (82)
@
Cleveland Cavaliers 103)

---

The Cavaliers ended the regular season on a high-note, as LeBron James inspired his team to their 20th victory of the season. King James had a double-double of 36 points and 12 assists, whilst three other Cavaliers made it into double digits. The Magic were led by Steve Francis, who had 20 points, and Dwight Howard who had an 11-11 (Points-Rebounds) Double-Double.

Cleveland outscored the Magic in every quarter, with different players taking charge in each. Drew Gooden scored 10 of his points in the first quarter, Michael Redd scored 10 in the 2nd, and Zydrunas Ilgauskas broke into double-digits in the third. The most impressive was the explosion by LeBron James in the 4th. As Orlando were coming off a 6-0 push, King James took over and put up 22 points in the final quarter.

Head Coach Mike Brown has used roughly the same rotation method when it comes to bench players all season. He mixed it up tonight, as both Dan Gadzuric and Donyell Marshall were given the night off. Consequently, Anderson Varejao picked up more minutes, and both Stephen Graham and Luke Jackson played for the first time in a while.

The Cavaliers clinched the Central Divison with this victory, and go into the playoffs as the 2nd seed in the East. They will meet the Indiana Pacers in the first Best-of-Seven Round, and will hold home court advantage.

The Cleveland Cavaliers end the regular season with a 20-9 record.

2005/06 Playoffs - 1st Round
Game #1:

ImageImage

Indiana Pacers (71)
@
Cleveland Cavaliers (86)

---

A great team peformance gave the Cleveland Cavaliers victory in Game of the 1st Round of the Playoffs. LeBron James led the team with 26 points and 5 assists, while Drew Gooden had a double-double of 13 ponits and 10 rebounds. Other than this, the game was rather lackluster.

Zydrunas Ilgauskas had 12 points and 4 blocks, in what he would consider a quiet night. Michael Redd was ice cold on shooting, going 1-8 for 2 points. The bench players combined for 24 ponits, with Damon Jones leading the way with 7 points.

One pundit said that the Cavaliers were in a mirror world tonight. For the first half of the season, Cleveland were an effective offensive force but had struggled with their defence. Towards the end of the season they manged to find a balance between the two. Tonight, they defended like champions but were shooting like an expansion team.

Head Coach Mike Brown was delighted with the victory, and said that if his team could win playoff games with poor offence, then he couldn't wait to see them at the top of their game.

2005/06 Playoffs - 1st Round
Game #2:

ImageImage

Indiana Pacers (82)
@
Cleveland Cavaliers (93)

---

A third quarter surge led by LeBron James took the Cavaliers to 2-0 in the first round of the playoffs against the Pacers. Cleveland saw their narrow lead cut and then overtaken, until James returned to the floor in the third and took charge. He finished with 24 points, 10 assists and 4 steals. He was assisted in the scoring department by Michael Redd (20) and Drew Gooden (14). Damon Jones also sank three consecutive treys in the third quarter to establish the Cavs' superiority.

For the first time in a while, the Cavaliers opted for an 8-man rotation system with Dan Gadzuric and Aleksandar Pavlovic being rested. It proved effective as Cleveland were able to have more of their heavy hitters on the court at the same time for longer periods.

One note of concern for Cleveland and Head Coach Mike Brown has to be their inability to rebound. The Pacers had twice as many rebounds as the Cavaliers, who have suffered in past games because of this problem. While Drew Gooden averages 7+ per game, and both Gadzuric and Anderson Varejao put up good bench numbers, the other forwards aren't rebounding as much. Both LeBron James and Zydrunas Ilgauskass' rebound averages are lower than usual. Hopefully it is something that can be addressed and rectified in training.

Game #3:

ImageImage

Cleveland Cavaliers (85)
@
Indiana Pacers (94)

---

Indiana pegged the Cavaliers back to 2-1 in the first round with a home victory. Cleveland were outscored in the first three quarters and entered the fourth quarter trailing by 10. They rallied through Michael Redd, who led the team with 25 points, and cut the gap to as little as two before having to resort to fouls. Indiana didn't miss a beat as they increased the gap to nine points to restore some parity to the series.

LeBron James left the court at the end of the third after picking up a slight knock. He will return for the next game and will hope to increase the Cavs lead. He finished the night with 21 points, adding 7 assists and 5 steals. The rebounding problems of the Cavaliers were rectified somewhat as both Zydrunas Ilgauskas and Drew Gooden grabbed 7 boards apiece. Ilgauskas had come under criticism for his low rebounding average as a centre, but he did his reputation good tonight. The pair added 12 and 14 points respectively.

Some of the Cleveland bench players are out of contract at the end of the season. A lot of them are currently playing for new contracts and will hope that their contributions this season will be enough. One of these players is Dan Gadzuric, acquired from Milwaukee with Michael Redd at the start of the season. He has proven to be an effective back-up for the Cavaliers all season, and he returned to the rotation system tonight. Although he didn't get much playing time, Gadzuric (Along with the other bench players) hopes that he will be given his time to contribute.

Game #4:

Cleveland Cavaliers (100)

Indiana Pacers (94)

---

The Cavaliers established a foothold in the series with a victory over Indiana that gives them a 3-1 advantage. LeBron James led the team with 31 points, 9 assists and 8 steals, whilst Drew Gooden contributed a double-double of 14 points and 12 rebounds. Michael Redd also chipped in with 19 points.

Zydrunas Ilgauskas has struggled somewhat throughout the playoffs and despite having 14 points and 4 blocks, he found himself in foul trouble. Dan Gadzuric stepped up off the bench as he had 5 points, 6 rebounds and 1 block. The other notable contribution from the bench was Damon Jones, who had 4 points and 5 assists.

Cleveland's all-around game was superb tonight as they opened up an early lead. Indiana clawed their way back and took a lead but they were eventually overwhelmed by the Cavaliers. Cleveland's team rebounding and assists were up, and there were no real complaints at all from Mike Brown after the game. The Cavaliers can win the series and move on into the second round if they win their next game.

From the Western Conference, the San Antonio Spurs were the first team to advance as they swept the Portland Trailblazers in 4 straight games. In the Eastern Conference, both the Philadelphia 76ers and Detroit Pistons advanced in 4 straight games over the Boston Celtics and the New Jersey Nets respectively.

Game #5:

Indiana Pacers (103)

The Cavaliers booked their place in the second round with a thrilling win over the Pacers. LeBron James led the team with 31 points, 7 assists amd 8 steals. Drew Gooden (13), Michael Redd (13) and Zydrunas Ilgauskas (15) all broke into double figures. Ilgauskas added a team-high 7 rebounds and 2 blocks.

Cleveland altered their bench again and seemed to find a system that fit them. Donyell Marshall and Aleksandar Pavlovic were replaced in rotation by Luke Jackson and Steven Graham, both of whom got their first playoff playing time. The bench combined for 30 points - Graham and Damon Jones both had 8, while Anderson Varejao chipped in 6 points, 3 boards and 2 blocks.

The Cavs are the third Eastern Conference team to qualify and will play either the Miami Heat or the Toronto Raptors in the second round. In the Western Conference, both the Minnesota Timberwolves and the Phoenix Suns advanced with respective 4-1 victories.

2005/06 Playoffs - 2nd Round
Game #1:

ImageImage

Miami Heat (111)
@
Cleveland Cavaliers (115)

---

The Cavaliers produced a massive 3rd quarter turnaround to take a 1-0 advantage over the Heat in the 2nd round series. Cleveland trailed by as many as 21 at the half, but a 41 point third quarter brought them to within two. The final quarter was a back-and-forth shoot-out, with the Cavs managing to have the final say. With the scores deadlocked at 109-109 with 40 seconds to play, LeBron James rebounded a Dwyane Wade three-pointer and ran down the other end to connect on a three-point play. Drew Gooden then split a pair of free throws, and James Posey sunk two of his own, before LeBron James sunk a further two free throws for a 115-111 win.

King James led his team with 40 ponits and 10 assists, adding 5 boards and 4 steals in arguably his best performance of the season. Zydrunas Ilgauskas chipped in with 16 points and 8 rebounds, while both Drew Gooden 918) and Michael Redd (15) broke into double figures. Dan Gadzuric had the most notable contribution off the bench with 7 points, 3 rebounds and 3 blocks.

The Cavaliers' game plan was interrupted in the opening minutes as Drew Gooden suffered an injury while grabbing an offensive board. Anderson Varejao replaced him temporarily, although Gooden returned for the second half. Cleveland couldn't settle their defence for the rest of the half and this led to the Heat having 62 points by halftime.

Theird third quarter surge was a great team performance, as both the starters and bench contributed for the best quarter of basketball the team has played all season. Victory in this first game will give the Cavaliers some confidence, but they will also realise that Miami will not want to go 2 down when the teams meet again.

Game #2:

Miami Heat (98)

Cleveland Cavaliers (93)

---

The Miami Heat pegged back the Cavaliers to 1-1 all in the best-of-seven series. Dwyane Wade had a game-high 31 points in leading them to victory in another close fought contest. LeBron James led the Cavaliers again with 27 points and 7 assists, whilst Zydrunas Ilgauskas had a dissapointingly low team-high 4 boards.

Ilgauskas also contributed 14 ponints, and Michael Redd added an impressive 21 but it was not enough for the Cavs. They found out only hours beforehand that Drew Gooden would not be fit for tonight's game because of the injury suffered in the last meeting. He was replaced by Donyell Marshall who had a quiet game with only 6 points and 2 rebounds. Cleveland's bench was led by Anderson Varejao, with 10 points, and Damon Jones (8) who contributed two vital three-pointers.

Cleveland were let down again by a shaky defence and faiulre to rebound, allowign the Heat at one point to lead by as many as 18. Remarkably, they got the difference down to as little as 2 thanks to a 4th quarter surge, but they were unable to eclipse their opponents. The Cavaliers will be back to full strength for the next game and will try to win the first game in what is essentially now a best-of-five series.

The Cavaliers failed to take advantage in this 2nd round playoff game. Dwyane Wade again led his team to victory (2-1 in series) with 25 points, while Antoine Walker put up 8 rebounds and Jason Williams added 10 assists. Cleveland rallied behind LeBron James who had a 24/4/8/5 statline. Drew Gooden added 16 points while Zydrunas Ilgauskas contributed 12 points, 6 rebounds and 5 blocks.

The game was neck-and-neck up until the final few minutes, where Miami opened up a 5-point lead in under a minute. Cleveland had been able to find an answer for every question the Heat asked all night, but were left stumped on a Shaq dunk and subsequent Wade 3-pointer. They kept plugging away and went on a 6-0 run to take a 1-point lead, but they coludn't hold onto it. With time winding down, the Cavs resorted to fouling but Miami hit 4 straight free throws to take the W and a crucial advantage in the series.

The Cavaliers evened the series at 2-2 with this hard fought victory at the American Airlines Arena. LeBron James posted 28 points and 8 assists, while Drew Gooden and Michael Redd contributed 15 and 16 respectively. Zydrunas Ilgauskas had an off-night and only managed two points - they came off a pair of free throws in the closing moments.

Miami's two all-stars Dwyane Wade and Shaquille O'Neal also had off nights, with Wade sitting out the final quarter because of his poor performance. Cleveland started slow but finally found their feet in the second half as they managed to overtake the Heat. Miami battled back but were unable to catch the Cavs, who sunk 8 consecutive free throws in the last two minutes to take the victory.

2005/06 Playoffs - 2nd Round
Game #5:

Miami Heat (87)
@
Cleveland Cavaliers (88)

---

LeBron James delivered a buzzer-beater to give the Cavs a 3-2 lead in the series. King James led his team with 28 points and 6 assists but watched as all their good work seemed to collapse in the 4th. Cleveland led for the majority of the game but were unable to put the game to bed in the 4th. Dwyane Wade rallied his troops to a 1-point lead but James stepped up to hit the clutch shot as time expired.

Cleveland had four starters in double figures but again suffered with rebounding. Zydrunas Ilgauskas and Drew Gooden had a joint team-high 4 rebounds, which at this level is unacceptable. Ilgauskas had another off-night as he commited the most turnovers (5) and shot the pporest FG%. The Cavaliers got help from their bench in the shape of Dan Gadzuric 98 points, 2 blocks) and Anderson Varejao (4 points, 3 rebounds).

The teams overall play improved from the last few games and it was enough to give them the advantage at a crucial stage in this series.

Game #6:

There will be a Game 7. Miami beat the Cavaliers to level the score at 3-3 in the series, meaning that there will be a deciding game at Cleveland. The Heat were led by Dwyane Wade (33 points) and Shaquille O'Neal (11), while Cleveland again had four scorers in double figures. LeBron James had 24 points and 6 assists and Zydrunas Ilgauskas had 10 points, 7 rebounds and 6 blocks! Drew Gooden (19) and Michael Redd (16) were the other two Cavaliers to score in double digits.

Cleveland opened the game strongly with some impressive offence and tight-fisted defence. Ilgauskas had three of his six blocks in the opening quarter, and both he and Gooden had 3 boards each in the opening period. The early scoring was handled by James and Redd, who again formed a deadly partnership. The 2nd and 3rd quarters saw a new rotation system where James and Redd were rested at the same time and Gooden and Ilgauskas were rested at the same time. This worked for a while but ultimately the change from inside to outside, and vice versa, eventually limited the Cavs' offensive ability.

The four were re-united in the fourth quarter and pulled to within 2 points but the Heat found an extra gear to take the victory. The Cavs have home court advantage for the final game and will be at full strength for what will be the biggest game in their recent history.

The winner of the series will complete the two Conference final brackets - playing the Detroit Pistons in the Eastern Conference finals. The Houston Rockets upset the San Antonio Spurs in a 6-game series and will meet the Phoenix Suns in the Western Conference finals.

WOW. It took two periods of over-time but the Cavaliers were finally sunk by the Heat. The decisive Game 7 surpassed it's own hype with one of the best playoff games ever. The two teams were never more than 4 points apart for the entire game and the 1-point difference in the final score shows the equality of both teams. LeBron James put up a heroic effort as he had 35 points and an amazing 15 assists, as well as being joined in double digits by three team mates. Zydrunas Ilgauskas contributed 18 points and 3 blocks, Drew Gooden had 15 points and 6 rebounds, and Michael Redd had 20 points.

The Cleveland bench did their bit as they displayed some great teamwork and defensive mentality. The 5 bench players combined for 24 points, led by Dan Gadzuric who had 6 points, 5 rebounds and 1 block. He and Anderson Varejao efficiently displayed their 'Substitue Twin Towers' method of defence throughout the game.

Head Coach Mike Brown admitted to being dissapointed with the loss but refused to blame his players - "My guys gave it their all tonight. They played with determination and heart and I can't fault any of them. I'm confident that we'll be back here next year."

The Eastern Conference finals will pit the Detroit Pistons against the Miami Heat, whilst the Western Conference final will pit the Phoenix Suns against the Houston Rockets.
