Ever wonder what's on others people's minds? Well, of course you do, and I think we can help. Listed below is a brief 2 day log file history, from March 6-8, of two hundred or so user search engine queries (each from a unique visitor IP) that resulted in a hit on our page.
Okay, so what does that mean?
Notice for Newbies: When you go to a search engine, like Google, and type in a keyword or keywords, such as "Kodak+film" for instance, and click on a search result (let's say you opted to visit the kodak.com homepage) your unique visit to the Kodak site, along with a time stamp, your IP, and what keywords you typed in the Google search window can be viewed by the Kodak webmaster via a raw weblog file.
Same deal here. These are keywords that browsers around the world typed in searching for something, that lead them to our website, Smooth Operator. The vast majority of queries utilized Google USA, UK and Canada, and to a far lesser degree, Yahoo search, MSN search and Alta Vista, along with a smattering of less popular others.
Of course, the user query keywords (or part(s) of them) correspond to keywords in our stories, although some seem to offer no resemblance at all. We have about 800 stories posted on our site with an eclectic mix of subjects, and our search engine relevance is very high. Smooth Operator search results normally appear on the first page or two of the search engine result listing for many popular subjects, especially on Google. (Don't ask us how we do it, cuz we ain't tellin'!)
Keep in mind that these are keywords that resulted in a click to our site only, as that is the extent of our administrative access regarding public search engine queries. Some of them are obvious, others are confusing, all are listed in no particular order or relevance, entirely unedited, exact duplicates omitted (we've gotten about ten zillion requests for American Idol), but all are intriguing and entertaining. You might even recognize one of your own. Enjoy!
