Battle of the big men in Dallas, Mavericks prevail

November 25th, 2005

Boxscores
Indiana Pacers | Dallas Mavericks

Dallas, TX (Ticker) Drew Gooden made his debut with 9 points and 4 rebounds for the Pacers but a strong first half by the Mavericks led by Dirk Nowitzki saw the Mavericks pull out of this game the victors. The first quarter saw Dirk shoot 5-7 and grapped 4 boards as he helped his team to a 32-26 start. Much of the same continued in the 2nd quarter as most things went the Mavericks' way. Jermaine O'Neal decided to step up late in the quarter, grabbing 5 rebounds (2 offensive boards) and scored 12 points to bring his team within 9 points at the break.

The 3rd quarter was an up and down battle, at one point, the Pacers looked to be close to taking the lead but Jason Terry denied them, who scored 24 of his own points. Then the Mavericks would go out to a double-digit lead but the Pacers saw Fred Jones help his team stay within 9 points at the break. The fourth quarter saw the Pacers struggle to get a shot in as the Mavericks looked to have this game in the bag. Jermaine O'Neal had fouled out and Ron Artest was struggling, who only scored 5 points. Danny Granger and Stephen Jackson stepped up their game and got their team to within 3 points with 4 minutes left in the game but poor shooting once again led to a demolishing of their chances to win. Sarunas Jasikevicius hit a few clutch points and steals but it was not enough as the Mavericks took the game 113-104. Jermaine O'Neal scored 32 points, grabbed 10 boards and dished out 5 assists. Dirk Nowitzki scored 35 points, grabbed 13 boards and recorded 2 in Assists, steals and blocks respectively.

Top Left: Dirk knows the rim. Top Right: So does Jermaine O'Neal.
Middle Left: Gooden had an okay debut. Middle Right: Jason Terry shoots the ball over Granger.
Bottom Left: Diop battles Gooden for position. Bottom Right: Rick Carlisle may have some thinking to do.

Danny Granger, "Well we tried our best, but I'm sure Ron Artest didn't."
Ron Artest, "Yeah I did, you didn't!"
Danny Granger, "Stats, dawg."
Ron Artest, "I'm leaving, *leaves*"

The Pacers move to 7-3 for the year, despite losing the past two games, they are doing quite well. There has also been another rumour involving Golden State and Indiana making a possible trade.

(I swear, that'll be the only trade until when I decide to trade RonRon or not)

Another Pacers trade, Pacers welcome Derek Fisher

November 26th, 2005

Indianapolis, IN - The Pacers have made another change to their roster, sending veteran Center Jeff Foster along with Point Guard Eddie Gill to Golden State in exchange for veteran point guard Derek Fisher.

The Pacers felt they needed some NBA experience and talent for the Point guard spot, which is occupied by rookie Sarunas Jasikevicius. Derek Fisher will most likely be sixth man off the bench.

Image
Above: Derek Fisher will wear the number 4 for the Pacers

Jeff Foster will serve as a back-up Center behind sophomore Andris Bierdrins and Eddie Gill will help out in the Warriors backcourt if Baron Davis gets injured.

Derek Fisher, "I'm glad that I'm coming to a team which will allow me to reign the court because of the security of Jermaine O'Neal, Drew Gooden and Danny Granger manning the middle."

First Power Rankings of the Season.

November 27th, 2005

Today, on www.nba.com, the official NBA Power Rankings have been released.

Image

As you can see, Yao Ming and Tracy MacGrady are leading their team to an outstanding start, the best since the Olajuwon days. The Rockets went 12-0 in November, despite T-Mac's injury. David Wesley has contributed well to the team with his shooting.

No surprises seeing Detroit second, the runner-ups had an 11-1 record during the month of November. Indiana have been playing great this month as well, having a stella start as most of their games were on the road but have slipped the last 2 games.

The shock slackers were Seattle as they've been playing terrible after their many offseason player losses. Hurricane strickened Hornets are in last place with only 1 win this year.

This is in bold because Jugs has decided to add a new feature.
I will now be adding Power Rankings to the first page so you guys can have an idea on how well each team is doing. The picture is not totally accurate so thats why i'll be doing an article about it every Sunday(in game).

The month that was November

November 31st, 2005

The first month of the league has FINALLY finished. There have been a few surprises, a few declines and a few consistent performances.

Players of the month were announced and as follows:

West Player of the month

Image

What a surprise, Andrei Kirilenko, who has been battling injuries in the past, has definitely improved his game to another level. Unfortunately, his team record does not show this. He's locked in Utah and seems to like it there, but is the Utah management doing enough to surround Andrei Kirilenko with the correct players?

East Player of the month

Image

After a terrible team start, Vince Carter has helped his team get back to 0.500 and thus being deserving of the East player of the month card. He turned his game around against the Pacers and helped his team shoot themselves back into play-off contention.

West Rookie of the month

Image

The only good thing coming out of the Hornets, Chris Paul has been having a stellar season and is definitely one of the best draftees, maybe second only to the player who received East player of the month.

East Rookie of the month

Image

Fans should be bowing down to Rob Babcock, Joey Graham has been an absolute STEAL in his first month in the NBA. By far the best performing rookie so far.

Now we come to the players who are in early MVP discussions.

Image

Number 1 is Andrei Kirilenko and his stats show that he can do it all. If his team record was better, he would be a shoe in for the MVP, thats the only downside and reason why he won't end up holding the MVP crown. Second is East player of the month, Vince Carter, his having a fine season too.

Third is Allen Iverson who is continuing his consistent 30ppg seasons and leading his team to the top of the Atlantic division. Fourth is the injured Tracy McGrady who has been behind the success of the Houston Rockets, despite being injured, he is still averaging a Small Forward version of Wilt Chamberlain type numbers. Fifth is LeBron James, the number 1 draft pick of 2003. He, of course, has improved his game heaps and trying to fulfill his huge potential.

Standings

Here are the standings for each division.

Image

Surprise leaders, the 76ers are doing well but Boston and New Jersey are close up their ass. Toronto are doing well to stay around 0.500 and the Knicks have been disappointing.

Image

No surprise as the Detroit Pistons are leading the Central division with their defence. Surprise close seconds are the Cleveland Cavaliers and Indiana Pacers, who are only on 3 losses each. Milwaukee are doing quite well compared to last season with new additions Andrew Bogut (draft), Jamal Magloire (trade) and TJ Ford(return from injury). The only downside to the division are the Chicago Bulls, they're full of young talent and were a surprise play-off entry last season but just haven't seemed to get their act together.

Image

This division is pretty weak but the Heat have managed to have a good season with their multiple new additions. Atlanta have been a surprise performer. Charlotte, Orlando and Washington can't seem to get a few wins going in a row.

Image

Another weak division, the surprise performance and continuing development of Zach Randolph (averaging 29+ppg and 11+rpg) has helped his team to a 6-5 record and the Northwest lead. Denver had a poor start but look to be coming back. Seattle, Utah and Minnesota have all been dissapointing, but their stars seem to be performing great though.

Image

Kobe is trying his best to prove his haters wrong by leading his team to number 1 in the Pacific. This division is weak as well, as the other four teams are below 0.500 but only 1 to 1.5 games behind the leaders. Amare's injury has hurt the Suns.

Image

Definitely the strongest division in the West, Houston are having a stellar start, San Antonio continue to quietly make a move to the play-offs. Memphis and Dallas are going strongly but the Hornets have been disappointing.

Standings for each conference.

Image

The top 9 are all above 0.500 and the Eastern Conference are currently looking stronger than the West. The only dissappointments are the bottom four, all lottery bound. Cleveland look to be heading to the finals for the first time with LeBron James which is great for the kid's future.

Image

Only seven teams above 0.500, including one 0.500 as a division leader, the Western conference looks very weak, except Houston, Memphis, San Antonio and Portland :D

Image

It is dissappointing to see that the 3rd seed in the west is ranked 16th out of 30 in the league and teams like San Antonio and Houston have to face each other in the 2nd round.

pacers.com Indiana Pacers stats as of November 30th

Image

Jermaine O'Neal continues to lead his team, he's so loyal to the team, it is unbelievable.

Pacers among league leaders

Jermaine O'Neal: 18th in Points Per Game; 23ppg. 10th in Field Goal Per Centage; 0.605. Equal 3rd in Blocks; 25. Equal 3rd in Blocks Per Game; 2.50bpg.

Pacers lose to Timberwolves in overtime.

December 1st, 2005

Boxscores
Indiana Pacers | Minnesota Timberwolves

Indianapolis, IN (Ticker) - Both Jermaine O'Neal and Drew Gooden scored in the 20's but were fouled off as they couldn't help their team win the game in overtime against the Timberwolves. The first half was dominated by the Pacers backcourt as they seemed to be having a wonderful game. Drew Gooden also strutted his stuff in the rebounding area of the match. But the Timberwolves wouldn't budge as they had 3 players with double-digits in rebounding.

The second half saw the big men begin dominating as many rebounds were taken by the Timberwolves in the half. They managed to have a strong scoring quarter in the fourth and got to within 4 points of the Pacers with 3 minutes left in the game. Some poor decision making led to some missed shots and errored passes and the T-Wolves managed to even the scores with 40 seconds left in the game. Ron Artest missed the shot and Kevin Garnett missed the 3-pointer and then the game was taken to overtime. In overtime, the Timberwolves just dominated everywhere as the Pacers could not hit a shot. This eventually led to games end with the Timberwolves taking this game 127-117. Kevin Garnett was easily named player of the game with 26 points, 11 rebounds, 6 assists and 4 blocks. Wally Szczerbiak also had a great shooting game with 26 points from 8-14 from the field including 9-9 free throws.

Ron Artest, "I had a better game today, I WAS TRYING HARD! *looks at Danny Granger*"
Nikoloz Tskitishvili, "I got 5 minutes of playing time :headbang: "

The Pacers have now lost 4 games in a row and look to be pretenders rather than contenders, but they're are still above 0.500. Their next game is at home against division rivals, Chicago Bulls.

Pacers first win of December against Bulls

December 3rd, 2005

Boxscores
Indiana Pacers | Chicago Bulls

Indianapolis, IN (Ticker) - The Pacers finally managed to get a win together after 3 losses in a row. The first quarter saw the Pacers come out, fired up and ready to take a win from their division rivals. Artest was in rebounding and scoring form. scoring 7 and grabbing 4 boards. The Bulls managed to pick-up their offensive backed by Ben Gordon and Luol Deng and managed to make the differntial more feasible.

The third quarter saw more strong play from the Bulls as they managed to finish the quarter tied with the Pacers with help from Chris Duhon off the bench, who scored a buzzer-beating fade away at the three quarter siren. The fourth quarter saw the Pacers take the early two point advantage and both team's big men were exchanging dunks and lay-ups. This eventually led to some great scoring from Ron Artest and Derek Fisher who helped their teams cross the line at the end, winning 111-101. Tyson Chandler, "Well, I get paid well, so I played well tonight. Definitely a disappointing loss but we've got things to improve and we're not quite ready yet to be a superstar team in the league."

The Pacers now improve to an 8-4 record and look to be in a nice shape again, with the new additions settling in nicely.

Weekly Power Rankings #2

December 4th, 2005

Week 2 of nba.com's Weekly Power Rankings have been released this week.

Image

The top 5 stay the same, as all 5 teams have been having stellar seasons. Cleveland were the big movers, moving up 8 spots to 6th place. Golden State moved down 4 spots with an 6-8 record and the Blazers moved up 4 spots with 3 great wins. New Jersey were also big movers as Vince Carter is helping his team and the Kings are big losers, moving down heaps of spots. Seattle and New York are trying to gain respect but the New Orleans Hornets are stuck on the bottom.

Richard Hamilton set to return, but injury not gone

December 4th, 2005

Richard Hamilton, despite wearing a mask, broke his nose a couple of weeks ago. It has now come to the stage where he CAN wear a mask, and play to his full ability. Expect to see him back into the starting line-up for the Detroit Pistons, who are doing quite well this season.

Jermaine O'Neal almost triple doubles as the Pacers win easily against Raptors

December 5th, 2005

Boxscores
Indiana Pacers | Toronto Raptors

Indianapolis, IN (Ticker) Jermaine O'Neal got player of the game winners with 31 points, 9 rebounds and 8 assists as he led his team to their 2nd victory in 4 days. The first half was embarrassing for the visitors as none of their players managed to score in double-digits before the halftime break. Jermaine O'Neal was focusing on helping out his teammates with great passes but decided to still go on scoring sprees himself.

The 3rd quarter got even worse for the visitors as the Pacers put the lead out to 40+ points at the break. Jermaine O'Neal was continuing his dominance and was searching for that triple double. The fourth quarter was just terrible for the Pacers, the struggling Raptors outscored them by 15 to finish the game with some respect. Chris Bosh and Joey Graham were the Raptors' only highlights.

Middle Left: Morris Peterson makes the tough shot plus the extra 1. Middle Right: Fred Jones gets double-teamed.
Bottom Left: Chris Bosh demands the ball. Bottom Right: Jermaine O'Neal at his powerful best, almost triple double.

Chris Bosh, "Why weren't they passing me the ball? I think at the end, we were great but our poor start was the X factor in tonight's loss."
Rick Carlisle, "Damn, that was just a horrible ending to a great offensive and defensive game by us. Just terrible. Good to see Jermaine O'Neal in form."
Larry Bird, "I love my team so much  "

Cavalier Damon Jones sprains foot, out for at least 3 weeks.

December 6th, 2005

Damon Jones, who was acquired through the offseason, has injured his sprained foot in an 102-63 win over the Clippers. This was probably the only setback in the terrific match by the Cavaliers. Damon Jones was going for a shot clock beating jumpshot but got his footing wrong and ending up spraining his ankle when he jumped up. He fell awkwardly and you could tell that he was in pain. He was immediately taken to the change rooms and was diagnosed with the sprainage. Eric Snow will most likely be the main back-up point guard of Jamal Tinsley.
