Mystery NBA arcade game

Postby thamfactor on Wed Feb 22, 2006 1:17 am

Hallo, so there's thing thats been bugging me as of late...I remember way back in early to mid 1990's there was a game JUST like NBA Jam. It was only coin operated, but it seemed to have all the stars in it, even the ones NBA Jam couldn't didn't have the licences for. I remember distictively using Shaquille O'Neal. Does neone kno of this arcade game

Btw. i'm pretty sure it wasn't NBA T.E, coz i remember it appeared to be older then NBA Jam, with players on their previous teams and whatnot.

So yeah, anyone whu can point me in the right direction, id appreciate it

It sounds really familiar...I know there was a Magic Johnson endorsed game back in the day but I don't think that's the one you're thinking of.

Nope, none of the above. Im certain Shaq, and fairly sure Barkley was in it. It's really bothering me, i hope i haven't made up a memory lol. I remember the gameplay was very similar to NBA Jam. Anyone kno if ay forgein versions of JAM had O'Neal in it?

As far as I know, all versions had the same rosters. Shaq didn't play in the series until Jam went five-on-five in 98/99. That was the one of the selling points of NBA Live 97 actually: "NBA LIVE has SHAQ!", since that was the only game at the time with his likeness rights. And by likeness I mean portrait, name and "kind of looks like him", because that was before cyberfaces.

Lol yeah, i remember buying 97 because A) They went 3-D, and B) Shaw was on the back cover

But Yeah, im certain i played an arcade game similar to NBA Jam, def. with shaq. Im also fairly sure the magic jerseys actually had pinstripes on them, unlike JAM

GameFAQs has an "NBA Showtime" listed over in their Arcade section. The only others are the ones in Acclaim/Midway's NBA Jam/Jam TE/Jam Extreme/Hang Time series.

There is an early beta version of NBA Jam that had Shaq in it. Here it is.

Although BETA is meant to mean an unrefined, early version, with Shaq, it actually is beta then the later releases lol. The picture of Shaq on nba live looks like a screen dump of a rom, anyone kno where i can find the BETA version of NBA Jam, with Shaq in it?

Barkley wasn't in the final release, not sure about the beta, but he did have his own game back in the 90s ("Barkley's Shut Up and Jam").

It was definitely the peak of the original NBA Jam series, no question. NBA Hangtime on the N64 was cool and all, but all the codes for NBA Jam TE made two player games a lot of fun...especially the "dunk from anywhere" code.
