100-pound woman eats 26 grilled cheeses in New York City contest

NEW YORK - A 100-pound woman ate 26 grilled cheese sandwiches in 10 minutes at a New York restaurant, winning the World Grilled Cheese Eating Championship.

Sonya Thomas won $8,000 US for the contest at the Planet Hollywood restaurant in Times Square on Wednesday but said she was disappointed in her performance.

"I could have done better," she said, adding that she was aiming for 30 sandwiches.

Thomas said she had to catch a train shortly after the contest to make her shift at a Burger King on Andrews Air Force Base in Maryland, where she is a manager.

She said she has a naturally big stomach capacity and heavily soaked her sandwiches in water to make them easier to swallow. She said to train she drinks large amounts of water to expand her stomach capacity and practises relaxing her throat.

Thomas, whose normal weight is about 100 pounds, estimated she gained 10 pounds during Wednesday"s contest.

It was a close win. Her nearest competitor, Joey Chestnut, ate 25 1/2 sandwiches.

On the eating contest circuit, Thomas is known as the "Black Widow," apparently because she has defeated so many larger men.

She holds numerous world eating records, including 46 dozen oysters in 10 minutes, five kilograms (11 pounds) of cheesecake in nine minutes, 48 chicken tacos in 11 minutes, 37 hot dogs and buns in 12 minutes and 56 hamburgers in eight minutes.

The event was organized by GoldenPalace.com, an Internet casino and poker room.

Braces Become Teen Fashion Fad in Thailand

Thailand authorities to fine or possibly imprison anyone caught wearing fake braces.

BANGKOK, Thailand - Health authorities are clamping down on a Thai teen fashion fad — wearing fake orthodontic braces.

Officials said Thursday they plan to target those who sell and make the pseudo dental gear with steep fines and prison time.

Girls flashing multicolored metallic grins are regularly featured in teen magazines as braces have become more common in Thailand, transforming the dental gear into a fashion statement.

Rather than getting fitted for the real and expensive option, teens have been buying do-it-yourself kits in stores and selecting colored rubber bands to match their outfits or moods.

Rasamee Vistaveth, secretary-general of the Consumer Protection Board, said the agency was planning to sign an order Thursday punishing sellers of fake braces with six months in prison or a $1,300 fine.

Importers and producers could face up to one year behind bars and a $2,600 fine.

Haha what a coincidence, I am gettin' braces today.

Braces suck :x But they work  (Y)

Tue Feb 07, 2006 3:17 am

I really think that is dumb. Braces are a nuisance, why would anyone want them?

Tue Feb 07, 2006 3:19 am

Braces sure work, but the secret to alleviating the pain is simply to take care of them. Floss, brush, and it'll cut down your braces wearing in half. They told me I would have to wear mine for two years (back in jr. high) and it came off in only a year.

As for the news, that's amazing. I can't even eat five hamburgers in 12 minutes, and she can take 56? Wow.

Dog, 22, on 10 cigs a day

The Austrian owner of a 22-year-old Dachshund says the secret of his dog"s long life is cigarettes.

Wolfgang Treitler, from Graz, says his dog General Edi has been munching his way through 10 cigarettes a day for years.

Treitler said: "His old owner abandoned him and so we took him in 17 years ago, and noticed straight away that he was in the habit of eating cigarettes.

"He eats the tobacco and the paper, and then chews a while on the filter before spitting it out.

"On average he eats about 10 cigarettes a day, but all of his teeth are fine and he is as fit as a puppy, even though he turned 22 this week."

Local vet Harald Mayr said: "Nicotine normally leads to poisoning in dogs, but in this case the animal has obviously become addicted to it which has increased its level of tolerance."

Tue Feb 07, 2006 8:07 am

I wonder if that dog smokes bongs too

Tue Feb 07, 2006 8:10 am

Now that dog needs some Nicobate.

That's strange. That's like saying we should take 5 shots of whiskey a day for 20 years and it should actually give us seven additional years of our life?
