What day is today again?

BLACK HISTORY MONTH, BITCHES :!:

It's time for us to celebrate, to rejoice, to recognize and represent. To remember the dreams we had, to remember the history. Don't turn this thread into a racist joke thread, please.

Black History Month started out as just one week in 1926. African-American scholar Dr. Carter Godwin Woodson created Negro History Week to educate people about the important contributions that Africans and African Americans have made to the world. He chose February because that's when the former slave and abolitionist, Frederick Douglass, and the president who ended slavery, Abraham Lincoln, were both born. February became Black History Month in 1976.

Feel free to celebrate, rejoice, and pass on (preferably positive) African American facts!

Is there a Woman's History Month? What about a Mexican History Month? Asian History Month? Turkish History Month?

Thu Feb 02, 2006 8:41 am

Mmm... history month.

Thu Feb 02, 2006 8:41 am

I completely forgot about that. Where was I?

There's a Cinco de Mayo for Hispanics, but we were the largest group of Minorities until the Mexicans started coming over. Still, how much does Mexican, Asian, and Turkish history stack up in the US to black history?

I do fear that one day(or month) the Mexican's will have a Mexican History month and we'll be left with Cinco de Negro. :(

Women, I cant really argue there, besides the fact that they're kinda intertwined with all of these months, but imagine how bad that could turn out!?
:o

Yeah, isn't March Women's month?

You must not know what Cinco de Mayo is.

Read this.

March sounds just about right - fertility month.

I don't know too much about black history month, but three cheers to Martin Luther King and Malcolm X! Hip hip horraay! Hip hip horraay! Hip hip horraay!

It doesn't matter, it's Black History Month and that's the only thing that needs to be talked about in this thread! I have a project due next week that has to deal with Black History Month.

Also, R.I.P. Coretta Scott King (Dr. Martin Luther King's wife). She died a day before Black History Month.

Yea I know what it is, I had 5 years of Spanish. But still, it's almost thought of in the ways we look at July 4th here. Anyway, of all people to bring it up...

Thu Feb 02, 2006 9:04 am

Yeah I know, when I was reading that I was like, "Wait, what?"

Thu Feb 02, 2006 9:27 am

What? I honestly don't care about Mexicans having their own month or day, I was just simply saying.

Yay for black people! Without them, we wouldn't have the NBA.

Yea we would, it just would be...different! Let's imagine...

No dunk contest. Just 3 point shoot out and a Lay-Up contest.
Everybody would still be wearing booty shorts
Bruno Sundov would be the face of Nike
Luke Longly would probably be a hall of famer
NBA Jerseys would be made by American Eagle
This would be the hottest shoe in the NBA
Assist numbers would be up probably :D
The NBA would probably be higher scoring due to the surplus in 3 point shots
David Stern might've banned Abercrombie and Fitch from being worn before and after games
Led Zeppelin would be played in all of the arenas
But the ASW Half time show would remain the same. :|

Um... I'd say black history would pale in comparison, but even still. I wouldn't give them a history month either. Who needs to encourage Turkish people? Seriously.

Edit: Nevermind, I missed the "in the US" bit.

Yeah we would, only it'd be based around fundamentals and skill as opposed to athletisism and marketing.

I believe all you wrote exists except for Turkish History Month. Every month some spam mail arrives in my mail box referring to one of those.

Really? Man, I must be out of the "loop" on these things.

So how does this work in the US...? What makes this month different from others, other than the fact that there's an actual theme for February. Do you guys get educated about black history? Do they try to promote black artists, actors, etc.?

I don't know, to me it is a pretty stupid concept. We should celebrate Martin Luther King and other important black (and any other race, for that matter) person. I just think it is a stupid thing to have. That's like saying December is the only time we should remember Jesus.

No, we have Easter too:lol: But the reason why Black History Month is celebrated is because of the struggle and the things black leaders had to go through during the 1950's. It doesn't really have to do with all the slavery and things like that IMO, it really is a month to show respect to all the black leaders that have accomplished things in their life such as George Washington Carver making the peanut or what Rosa Parks did in 1955 by not giving up her seat. It's just that blacks have been through so much during that time period and even before, and this month basically symbolizes that. The reason why its more a month than a day because I don't think you can celebrate everything that blacks from a long time ago did for hundreds of generations.

Thu Feb 02, 2006 12:38 pm

Mafia, what I'm saying is we should celebrate those people 12 months out of the year. What is the point in assigning a month for a certain minority group? It just seems pointless, to me.

Thu Feb 02, 2006 12:39 pm

Indeed its black history month bitches..reprizentin the struggles the black man have been induring for 5 hundreds years...still the minority but still making our presense known in the world...beit negative or postive. :bday: :applaud: :chug:

now thats a nice lol for me  /me hi-fives you

I don't think there should be a set month for celebration either... it makes it sound as though we are excluding certain groups' histories (such as hispanic, turkish, caucasian, etc) and I don't think there should be any more tension amongst races.

But I do think it would be funny to celebrate it in a nearly all white school like the one I go to. Go to school dressed like Bob Marley in celebration... heh heh 8-)

When I went to my old school which was literally all-white (except me), I wore a shirt with this picture on it on February 1st and got suspended for a week. I found it amusing
