Listen Up! With Charles Barkley

For those overseas or wherever who do not get to see and hear from Charles Barkley, Kenny Smith, Magic Johnson and Ernie Johnson during the pregame and the postgame.

Charles Barkley (who is never right, he picked Sacramento over Dallas even without Webber, he picked the Lakers to win everything, over and over, saying every game, that Shaq and Kobe will do it) wore a fishing hat before game 5 at San Antonio, this coming from a running joke/graphic that Kenny Smith made up about players going fishing now that they have been knocked off.

Charles wore this fishing hat and Dallas won, then Dirk Nowitzki was quoted as saying "What a moron" about Barkley. Barkley on the air said "I like Dirk, but he's pissed me off, so if he doesn't shut up, I am going to go down there and kick a mudhole in his ass."

Dallas quickly made shirts for game 6 stating "We don't Fish"

Barkley who I actually believe is the greatest power forward statistical of all-time, he shot better and rebounded better than Karl Malone, played less years, games. Barkley wanted to run for a position in government in the state of Alabama, but was informed that he would be paid around $50,000 and that he would have to put aside his conflicting interests, such as gaming investments, gambling and strip clubs, he said he was no longer interested. Why would he believe he could win anyway.
He brings nothing to the world of thinking basketball anaylists, nothing, he never adds a single intelligent comment, a hint of insight or a prediction that holds any value. He just blurts out one ignorant thing after another.

For the record, I agree with Nowitzki.

IMO the tbs/tnt team of barkley, smith, magic, and EJ provide the best/most entertaining coverage of the NBA. yeh, barkley may be a moron at times, that's part of chuckster's personality. but he's not afraid to say what's on his mind... anyway, those guys IMO provide great insight of the game and are entertaining at the same time.

as for the ABC/espn coverage- they feature Bill walton as the #1 color commentator. enough said.

if jesse ventura can win governor if minnesota anything is possible when it comes to athletes running for government positions....

paul, while i can understand where you come from, i agree with limp. the mound is entertaining to me, not because i think he's some kind of genius, but because even when he's saying something stupid (which he does and has done for as long as i've known of him) you know he's saying exactly what he's thinking. no political correctness, no kissing ass, no diplomacy.

if i'm watching basketball, give me marv and the czar callin the games (walton is cool too) and give me charles and anyone at half time. i think it might be one of those things like with AI, i suspect half the reason i like him so much is that my bigot of a father hates him. thats a digression, i'm not suggesting you are a racist, paul. i guess my point is that people like me (if there's such a thing) will tolerate the less capable as long as they aren't so damn status quo.

This has nothing to do with race, Barkley is just stupid and people like you guys say it's neat.

Most entertainment (i.e. Snoop Doggy Dogg, Eminem, Next Friday, Dog Eat Dog Television, the Bachlor and so forth) foams at the mouth with ignorance and controversy. This doesn't mean it offers any quality whatsoever.

Speaking of ESPN, Tom Tolbert is another complete idiot, he fights with Bill Walton about everything. Walton, one of basketball's great players, leaders and a hall of famer both in college and the NBA should not have some jerkoff who didn't a thing at Arizona nor in the NBA, telling anyone Walton is wrong. Although Walton is overtop and loud at times, I believe he is possess both knowledge and sincere insight.

Also the guy that yells "Right between the Eyes" is a fake and is a loud jackass as well.

Marv, Mike and Jeff combination is currently the best, too bad they are done. I hope the entire finals is Sean Elliott, Bill Walton and Brent Musberger.

It's my opinion on these guys, especially Barkley.

True, would you like to see those 2 agreeing in everything?, I don't think that would be good in any case, since there's (wrong-right, true-false, funny-boring), why would the TV pay 2 people who have the same opinion?, that would be stupid.

The fact that MJ was so good playing Basketball doesn't mean his comments are always right. Whatever Walton did during his career as a basketball player has nothing to do with being a commentator. Plus, when someone tells Walton he's wrong, that person is not disrespecting the accomplishments Walton did while he was a player. True, that other guy came out of nowhere to sit there and talk shit, but in some way both of them suck as commentators.

I hope the entire finals is Sean Elliott, Bill Walton and Brent Musberger.

Sean Elliott: Another one, this one is worst, he has a good comment for every player, Shaq is hitting free throws "Well, Shaq is already a good free throw shooter". Claxton is giving some assists "hmmm, Claxton might be one of the top Guards of the league next year".

I really don't care who they put there as commentators, but a Showtime by guys who are having some fun or make you laugh a little, I don't think is for complaining. I really would shut down the TV if they put those you mentioned there running the Halftime/Post game show.

Nothing will beat "The Fiftiest Most Beautiful People List" quote from Magic Johnson. You can just sit and ponder how the logic of that works...as though they took the beautiful people on earth and found the ones who had the most to do with the number 50 or something. Classic...

I don't mind a little bit of Sir Charles, now and back in the day. But I find sometimes he goes a little too far. I think it's because he has a reputation of being outspoken, he tries to maintain that reputation by going overboard with his comments. Barkley has always been capable of telling like it is, and making a good quip here and there. Unfortunately, sometimes you have to sift through some brash comments (and sometimes downright stupid ones) to appreciate his humour.

I do think he should tone it down sometimes. Anyone else remember his comment back in the Philly days, where he said after a victory of New Jersey it was a game that if you lost, you'd "go home and beat your wife and kids"? There was also the time he tried to spit on a racist fan and hit an 8 year old girl - a couple of incidents that other players might have avoided.

I remember back in the 1993 Finals, after Barkley was called for a foul, he said (quite clearly) "Fuck, fuck, fuck!" then looked straight into a camera and screamed "This is bullshit!" Most any other player would have been T'd up for that kind of outburst, but Sir Charles is notoriously open and outspoken, so the refs let it slide.

And I think that's just the way it is with Charles Barkley. He's not going to stop saying whatever he wants, so you either find him funny or find him irritating. Until he goes way out of bounds with his comments, he'll have a vehicle to showcase his antics.

i think the basic vibe here is that barkley is. love him, hate him, rarely will you fall in the middle. i love the mofo, and while i don't claim that he's a nobel laureate, i take some exception to the assertion that he is 'just stupid'. take, for example, his piercing analysis of the minnesota timberwolves mental block against beating the lakers in a playoff series:

'the only people who believe (the timberwolves) can win are their wives and girlfriends.'

now, not only do i find that profoundly insightful, but it is the kind of comment that the vast majority of commentators, for fear of sounding sexist or disrespectful or whatevah, wouldn't even have the balls to re-word.

i also believe that barkley is being exactly who turner broadcasting wants him to be.
