Martin Luther King Jr. day

Tue Jan 17, 2006 4:45 am

Today, January 16, is a national holiday in America, celebrating the birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr. For those of you who don't know, he was the leader of the Civil Rights movement in the 1960s that fought (nonviolently) for equal rights for African-Americans and other "minorities" in the United States. Although best know for his political speach "I Have a Dream," delivered in Washington D.C. in front of 1,000,000 people,

King was a preacher first and foremost. Here are links to some of his best sermons. I highly recommend taking some time to read a couple, they are so inspirational, wholesome, and just a dose of reality. (I'll put a  next to my favorites)

His main message was that love beats hate. And so he said that the best way for African-Americans to gain equality was not to match the physical violence they were recieving from whites with more violence in retaliation, but to "fight physical force with soul force." He believed in nonviolent direct action like that practiced by Ghandi in India. For this message he was constantly beraded by just about everyone, including fellow African-Americans who wanted to fight.

He was jailed dozens of times, stabbed once, his house was bombed 3 times, he recieved countless death threats and hate messages, and was finally shot to death on April 4, 1968. Here's his gravestone:

Happy MLK Jr. Day, I feel like I owe him thanks as a hispanic , because not all hispanics have light skin . I have a brown skin tone , so I would've been discriminated against as well . Plus this man brought all races together .

Happy MLK Day. It's hard to describe how much he did for African Americans and America itself. He really didn't just change the way people look at Blacks, but the way people looked at anybody of different race. The fact that he did all these things without any type of violent behavior made him even more heroic because I know if I were to recieve death threats and things of that nature, I wouldn't be able to control my composure. THANKS DR. KING!

One of the few peopel in history who actually got a glimpse of Heaven while still on this earth. And as his peers before him, he was dejected and scorned for this enlightenment. May his memory carry on among th eliving, Rest In Peace. (Y)

I got it totally, that's the kind of tone I was trying to set with the "W00t Mart :chug:" thing.

It looks like a milestone thread, so we approached it like that.

Jae's was just more accentuated.
