I'm white. Am I scared of all black people? Hell no. Sure, if I was walking in some dark back alley by myself and a group of angry looking black people approached me, I'd be scared, even if it was a group of white people I would still be scared.

I'm not more scared of an average black guy then an average white guy or average chinese, japanese, east indian, native, asians, mexican, etc. The color of someones skin doesn't make them more scary then someone of equal build, look or whatever that happens to be a different color.

Racial prejudice and stereotypes probably do make a lot of white people fearful of black people. Consider the stuck in an elevator with black celebrity urban legend. I don't consider myself one of their number, though. Some people do live up to stereotypes of course but I don't immediately jump to that conclusion.

Are white people afraid of black people?

Why only white people? I'm sure even black people are afraid of black people. Remy, aren't you afraid of Michael Jackson?

I rest my case.

Jae wrote:I'm not afraid of black people but I can see why some people would be in general... like young-ish black guys dressed up like gangstas and whatever.

They bring it on themselves entirely. You only have to look at something like SLAM magazine... 99.9% of the black players they feature are standing there with their heads tilted looking like they've had the worst day of their entire lives and they want to hurt someone, this however in their minds is "cool". The white players, some of them pose like idiots but others just smile. (Some) Young black kids like projecting the image that they're mean and tough and people should be scared of them.

I remember when I was in LA I walked past some guy who looked about 19, dressed like your a-typical gangsta rapper and he gave me this really weird stare, I didn't know whether he was checking me out or trying to telepathically tell me to keep away from him because he'd kick my ass. What's the point of this? Apart from trying to look tough. If there's any fear directed at black people (young black people mostly) it's not ignorance or racism, how would you feel if people WANTED you to be scared of them? I think regular everyday black teenagers probably suffer because certain others in their age group want to be seen as gangbangers or whatever.

very good points made....but I will bring attention to the passage that I have highlighted in bold....I was just in LA, and the sense of racism there is definitely a lot higher than Australia and NZ (where there is obvioulsy racism to certain ethnicities)....I was strolling down the stretch and passed these 3 black guys who eyeballed me....didn't scare me in the slightest, I just thought they were punks....it seemed like the majority of black guys that I saw eyeballed me....it did not matter if I was wearing sunnies or not....

but then it occurred to me that they were probably eye-balling me because I was a white guy walking on my own in a not-so-safe area....who knows....

did get a chance to go through South Central and Downtown LA which was good on a hostel tour I went on....got to see where parts of Boyz n the Hood was filmed, where the LA Riots started....was quite interesting that here we were, a mini-van full of white tourists getting eye-balled by everyone we drove by....tour driver said it's because we're not suppose to be there or something....good experience though....also caught metro and was only white person on train....all latinos and blacks....felt a bit strange with the shoe being on the other foot....

I've gone off on my tangent, but definitely some good points made there Jae....

as for me....am I afraid of blacks....no....would I be afraid if I was approached by a group of blacks....I wouldn't lie so the answer would be yes....society has imparted all of us, regardless of colour, certain pre-conceived thoughts....last time I was in a fight when a group of 5 young blacks came from behind and attacked my mate and I....we were so drunk....was funny....they all went after my other mate, and I was like "come on guys, no need for this" so 3 of them start throwing haymakers at me and I'm just blocking them and saying "I don't want to fight guys, I'm really not in the mood"....was wierd....came out of that with a broken button on my shirt and a scratch on my head after having 3 of them going at me, they couldn't touch me....gotta luv the grog  that was a couple years back now....

enough babble....continue the discussion....

in australia (where i live anyway) its more the asian gangs that im scared of, the black population isnt very big (non-existent). its mainly indians and asians, and the asian gangs are pretty hardcore (hardcore in the sence they are in groups of 10 -but more where that came from- and all carry knives...)

Mon Jan 09, 2006 11:00 pm

you guys are thinking about this to hard, no whites arent afraid any different then blacks are of white.
i look pretty white and i go to the hood all of the time and dont feel threarened, and i grew up with starbucks on every corner and a silver spoon in my mouth.

BhZmAFiA knows what hes talking about and i totally aggree

As a black man..like andrew said...i myself am afraid of some black people. Living in the streets of the bronx like i do..you gotta watch your back 24/7. I come off very intimidating myself...cause i look like a line backer..so people dont fuck with me..never have since highschool. I've done some crap in my youth also that might have a couple white people scared of me (anyone for that matter)...so it's all relative.

Mon Jan 09, 2006 11:13 pm

Actually Bhzmafia is a good example, I don't think he was smiling in ANY of the pics he's posted of himself. Why this constant need for (mostly blacks, and some white American teens) to try and look "cool" or gangsta all the time.

Mon Jan 09, 2006 11:15 pm

Cause looking at acting soft will get you your ass kicked out here. Not to mention most are homophobic.

Mon Jan 09, 2006 11:22 pm

Well yeah, but you're hardly going to get your ass kicked on an internet message board for smiling in a photo.

Mon Jan 09, 2006 11:23 pm

Thats where the homophobia comes in. We dont wanna come off as gay lookin or metro-sexual.

Mon Jan 09, 2006 11:29 pm

How come black guys always go out in big groups of guys.... just because you call it a gang doesn't make it less homosexual.

Mon Jan 09, 2006 11:40 pm

Yea, cause a bunch of friends, clique or "gang" is distinctly homosexual.

Mon Jan 09, 2006 11:47 pm

No less homosexual than smiling in a photo  :P

Tue Jan 10, 2006 12:17 am

True...but im only trying to explain the mindset (y)

i`m not afraid from black people, even how they dress, i`m more afriad from those russian gipsy....

Tue Jan 10, 2006 4:28 am

On a more serious note, I'm not scared of black people. I've lived around black people for most of my life, I see no reason to be afraid of them.

If something is supposed to happen, it'll happen. White, black, yellow, red or brown...if it's supposed to happen, it will.

If you're living with a sense of fear within you, you aren't doing much living.

That's correct. You never know when or where it's coming. just be prepared for anything , everytime, everywhere. Just like David Schwimmer said: "UNAGHI!"

Jackal wrote:Why only white people? I'm sure even black people are afraid of black people. Remy, aren't you afraid of Michael Jackson?

He's not black. :D

But yes, sometimes. When you're like me, growing up with white people around all of the time you sometimes kinda start thinking like them I guess. I mean just because I grew up around all these white people doesn't make me rich or any better educated(well, maybe :P Compare school books in Compton to school books in a pretty much all white city) or anything. But still, I was raised like any other lower class black person was, on chicken, grits, and foodstamps.

So after being around white people and their culture for so long, sometimes I'll be walking in a mall and see a couple intimidating black guys. Then I just have to remember I'm just like them, so I don't worry about it.

Everybody, whether they're white or black or whatever color, I don't make my judgment on someone by placing a stereotype on them. Stereotypes are often times misleading and I refuse to use them. I make my judgments on people after I've been around them for at least a couple days.

For some reason, some unknown reason, I get along with black people a lot easier than I do anyone else. I'm not a huge fan of rap/hip hop unless it's Tupac or some of the older stuff, and I usually don't associate with rap music as I listen to alternative rock or hard rock, but yeah I can put up with some rap music. I've also noticed a lot more black women are attracted to me than white women, not sure why. I won't place a stereotype on you, I'll be the judge after I've spent some time around you and I've gotten to know you.

Oh, I don't like stereotypes.

The the black kids in highschool.. they try to act all gangster and "hard".

Tue Jan 10, 2006 8:08 am

He's not black.

Ofcourse he is, just because he changed it doesn't mean he isn't black. :P
