West & Fratello Ready For New Season
Memphis, Tenn. Jerry West is very optimistic for the upcoming 05'06 season. In a interview yesterday he could not help but show his excitement for this upcoming season."I feel we have added alot of nice pieces to this puzzle, Eddie Jones and Bobby Jackson will be key to us this season and their defense and intensity is what we need to improve on last season. Hakim should see minutes this year, we drafted him for his athleticism and ability to block and rebound. We are pleased to have him a part of our franchise and see him being here for a while" When asked about player movement he was not about to shy away from the truth."We will remain active throughout the first half of the season, as we speak I am looking at ways to improve the team and if there is a deal on the table in our favour, I wont hesitate to pull the trigger. I am not going to get any player in return, I want team players, hustle players, players who are role models and overall outstanding people and teamates. My job is to get all the right pieces together for Mike and to put this team in the top tier of NBA and I wont stop till we are."
Image

Mike Fratello talked about his tactics and gameplans for this season."We will be focusing on defence this season, I feel if we slow down and can stop teams in the half court the wins will come easier because I dont have any doubt that we can score whether it be running or in sets I believe we can go along way. We brought in players who can play defence and our known for that. On the offensive side we also can spread the floor with our shooters and go inside to for a good in and out offence. When asked about the vacancies in coaching and scouting positions he had this to say"We are still going through the process of that we have alot of applicants to go through, what we are looking for is experience and defence minded coaches. It is still up in the air right now but it wont be long to we come to a final conclusion." Mike Fratello has nothing but high expectations for this ball club and is setting high goals for his team."I want us to be one of the top 5 defensive teams in the league, I want to keep teams to a respectable fg% and not allow teams over 100. I believe we can do this and we will be working hard to achieve these goals. I am not really focusing on our win loss, I just want to make sure we play harder than any team we face and never let up on any play. If we do that the W's will be there."

TRAINING CAMP DONE, READY FOR SEASON
The Grizzlies have returned from Tampa, Fl, after a gruelling training camp the players are ready for to implement there new look gameplan and tactics. The week long training, mainly focused on defence and conditioning. New assitant coach Theobold Ranks was busy implementing the new defensive tactics and Rasheed Byars was doing individual workouts with all the players. Mike Fratello was very pleased with how things went in Tampa. "Things went smoothly this week. We got in everything we wanted and more which I was very pleased about. Theobold and Rasheed got on very well with all the players and staff and all players have bought into their systems and everything is right on track."

Even the players came out of this week with all smiles and positivity. Shane Battier is excited about the new defensive look of the team."I cant wait for this season. I pride myself on my defence and now that we are all focused on shutting teams down. I am glad to be here and am pleased in where this franchise is headed and believe that we can go along way this season."Even newcomers on this team are looking foward to this year. Eddie Jones after practice said"I'm glad to be here and hope things continue in this direction, I'm at a good place right now with a great support system and teamates and just ready to start playing." Hakim Warrick was very impressed with his first glimpse at life in the NBA" All I can say that this place is run the way it should be it's extremely professional in every way. Great people are around me and all I want to do is help this team win in anyway possible." The grizzlies open their season at Miami on the 2nd of November.

MIAMI TOO CLUTCH FOR GRIZZ

Image87 Image80

Nov, 2. The Heat executed when it counted down the stretch abling them to pull away for a seven point victory. Wade was crucial in the 4th with 12 of his 24 points coming in the last. The game was a see-saw back and forth the lead went all game. Memphis attacked the rim strong and were able to get Shaq in early foul trouble.

The second half was a defensive display by both teams only allowing a total of 68 points in the half. The Grizz were able to stay in the game due to their defence even thought they shot poorly in the second half.

Newcomers Jones(13,4-7,1-2,3 ast,3stl) and Jackson(8,3-5,2-2,5ast) had solid debuts respectively. On the other side of the ball Posey(13, 5-12,1-3, 4reb) and Williams(16,6-16,1-6,5ast) had a good showing against their former team. Rookie Warrick had 3 points and boards in 12 minutes.

After a impressive start, Damon Stoudamire left the game in the 3rd with a sprained ankle and will be ok for Fridays game against Orlando. Scores were level with 4:43 left in the 4th. After a contraversial no call which lead to a 3 point play by Shaq, the Heat got the swing in momentum and after two Grizz turnovers were able to hold on for the W.

ORLANDO OUTGUNNED
Image91Image102

Fri, 4 Nov. Orlando were never in it tonight coming out the gate slow and were down 12 at quarter time, thanks to the shooting of miller(11pts) and jones(15pts). Magic shot terribly and were forced to put up shots they didn't want thanks to the tremendous Grizzlies defence.

It was an even 2nd quarter and at the half the lead was 15. Dwight Howard (18pts) and Grant Hill(g22pts) fought hard to keep the lead from going out to 20. Memphis' defence didn't let up and the Magic were again throwing up shots and turning the ball over.

Gasol(19pts) and Stoudamire(13pts) scored in bunches in the 4th to blow the lead out to 21 with 8:09 left. With that the bench was checked in and was solid till they let the magic go on a 13-3 run to close out the game.

MEMPHIS WIN CLOSE ONE

Image83 Image86

Memphis, TENN. In what was a neck and neck battle all the way through, the Grizzlies were able to hold on for a 3 point win over the Cavs. The largest lead of the game was 5 points, and with 0:11 seconds left Mike Miller(12pts) hit a deep two off the dribble to put the Grizz up 3. Rookie Hakim Warrick(6pts) came up with a huge play to seal the victory, with 11 seconds left Cavs inbounded the ball to Snow(11pts) who kicked it on to Lebron(13pts). James dribbled past half court and was double teamed by Warrick who came up with the game winning steal and was able to run out the clock.

The Cavs played well and had a huge display by Big Z(14pts, 16reb) and Gooden(24pts, 13rebs) who both scored nearly all the Cavs points in the last quarter. Memphis had a good showing from Gasol(17pts) and Jones(14pts). Stoudamire(4pts) was held in check by Snow and was outplayed for minutes by Bobby Jackson(12pts).

The Grizz played strong defence and only allowed the Cavs to shoot 38% from the field and forced 20 Cav turnovers.
