The Roman Catholic Church of old just made it to December 25 to make it easier to the pagan converts then. December 25 was the day they celebrate/worship some sort of sun god, I think. (I think it was) Emperor Constantine made the shift to December 25 so the new converts wouldn't be confused anymore with the date of the joyous celebration.
