Celtics Hire New General Manager
August 10 2005 - Today the Boston Celtics announced they have signed new General Manager, Shaun Callahan. Previous GM Danny Ainge now moved to the Team Owner. Mr. Callahan told us, after he had been signed that he was excited and couldnt wait for the season to start. Later on that day, Kenny Smith talked to Shaun Callahan about becoming the Celtics new GM. Heres a look at the Chat Transcript:
Kenny Smith:Welcome Mr. Callahan how are you doing today?
GM Shaun Callahan:Im doing good, really good.
KS:We found out today that the Celtics Organization, mostly Danny Ainge who is now the Team Owner, that you are there new General Manager. I know you were the Assistant Coach of the BC Eagle. But an you tell me how this even started out?
SC:Yea, acually its rather odd. Ive been working with the Boston College Eagles for sometime now. Probally 3 years. And The Celtics accually were looking to somehow draft Jared Dudley. So Danny was talking to me about Jared, and I told him he has potential to be a great, great player. So Danny acually called me the next day, and he was talking to BCs Head Coach, and they told Danny how dedicated I was, and how I did all the right things. So the previous Celtics owner, said he was thinking of selling the team. Danny bought the team and asked me to be the new General Manager.
KS:That is an interesting story. What was going through your mind at that point?
SC:What was I thinking at that time? So many things. The first thing was, ARE YOU SERIOUS?! In my mind I shouted. Then I asked him, are you sure, I mean I want to take the job for sure. So he told me, Im sure, I think you sound like someone who is dedicated to their job, and thats what we need. So I was siked.
KS: What do you think this Celtics team needs to improve on the most?
SC: A few things. Not much, its their age thats holding them back. If they had all togeather about 2 or 3 more years togeather, they would be a good team for sure. Other than that, I think is staying in front with the lead. But those are all things that are changeable
KS: Have you and Doc sat down and talked yet?
SC: Quickly. He welcomed me, and he told me he heard great things about me so, I was really happy.
KS:One last question before we let you go, do you have any plans right now for the team? A trade? Something like that?
SC: Im not sure. Theres a few things I have in mind, mostly trying to get the Celtics more involved by getting billboards, and small things like that. But other than that, I guess you'll just have to wait.
KS: Alright Shaun Congradulations on being the new Boston Celtics General Manager.
SC: Thanks alot.
