The 2.17 million is only in cap space, not for hiring assistants, but hopefully I'll get around 2 mill. :P

Good luck with this dynasty

Damn, exams suck, especially since mine is on a saturday. :(

Good luck, I enjoyed your Live 05 Raptors dynasty.

Thanks a lot. From what I've seen you also had a pretty good 05 dynasty as well (although the team that you used slipped my mind for the moment).

Thanks a lot.

Nuggets Hire New Coaching Staff

View Leon Camby's Profile (Assistant Coach)
View Declan Ellison's Profile (Head Scout)
View Oba Billup's Profile (Trainer)
View Liu Wong's Profile (Second Scout)

Realizing that they needed an upgrade in their staff and personel, the Denver Nuggets' general manager Kiki Vandeweghe had fired almost all of their staff and has been recently seen spending $2.08 million for a brand new coaching staff, trainers, and scout for the team. The only staff member that was retained from this suprising outburst was head coach George Karl. Karl helped turned the Nuggets around during the middle of the 2004-2005 season and led the Nuggets to their second consecutive post-season appearance, where they fell to to the championship San Antonio Spurs in the first round.

"I feel like it was time to move on, and I think that there are plenty of outstanding coaches in the market right now that we can acquire," said Vandeweghe. "With a brand new coaching staff, we'll get a fresh start to the season and we're planning on bringing in some more specialized assistant coaches to help develop our younger players."

"It was definitely a strange move, but I'm backing Kiki 100 percent," Karl had said. "I think we needed a change, and I think it's a better time to do it now than later on in the season or before training camp comes along."

The first coach to be hired was Leon Camby. Camby is a 51 year old assistant coach that specialized in running offensive and defensive plays, while also showing a talent for working well with players who needs to work on their jump shooting. Camby was elated to hear that he was selected as the new coaching assistant. "I've been working in a lot of different basketball camps and programs, so this will definitely be a gigantic leap upwards for me." said Leon Camby, who was clearly brimming with excitment. "I feel like I can really help get this team going and I'm definitely interested in working with the players on the team."

Declan Ellison was the second new staff member that was acquired. This 48 year old scout was very good at searching for defensive talent, and has always had a knack for finding gritty and hard-nosed defensive players with tons of offensive potential. Declan Ellison does not have much experience at the professional level, but he has earned a reputation for making quality scouting reports everywhere he has worked. "I've worked for the Detriot Pistons as sort of a guy behind the curtains, but I think I've done some good work there, and I'm hoping to do the same here in Denver," boasted Ellison.

Other staff members include rookie trainer Oba Billups and Liu Wong, an up-and-coming scout. Both Billups and Wong are new to the NBA, but Kiki Vandeweghe was clearly pleased with their work. "Both guys are very hard-working and know how to get the job done," said Vandeweghe. "They are both individuals that know the game of basketball well and their lack of experience isn't going to bother me at all."

Denver Training Camp

Image
This was the training program that was set up by Leon Camby to help the Nuggets polish their offensive game while also working a bit on their defence.

With training camp underway, that meant a fresh new start and beginning for the Denver Nuggets. Denver had a terrible start to the 2005-2006 season, which eventually resulted in the firing of their head coach and the hiring of current head coach George Karl. With a brand new training staff and their core group of players from last season intact, the Denver Nuggets would try to avoid their past mistakes and start off the season full of momentum that will hopefully carry them into the playoffs.

"I'm just trying to see what works with the team and how the new guys are going to fit into our system," said Karl. "We lost Voshon Lenard, who is a very instrumental player on our team for almost a whole year last season. I think it was one of the main reasons why Denver got off to such a terrible start; Lenard's perimeter shooting is a valuable asset to this team and is a very key offensive player. If we can keep him healthy than I think that we'll do very well."

One of the main people in charge of maintaining Lenard's physical fitness is Oba Billups, the team trainer. Oba is a brand new face to to the team, but he is inexperienced and this is his very first NBA team that he has been on. Leon Camby is another brand new staff member on the Nuggets and will be an assistant coach alongside George Karl. Camby was busily preparing the players and helping each player individually work on different aspects of the game. "Every player on this team is different," said Camby. "In my first day with them I was a bit lost, but George Karl and the rest of the players were very understanding and helped me fit in perfectly."

Image
With most of their players from last season coming back, Carmelo Anthony hopes to continue to build on his promising career and is currently working on sharpening his defensive skills

When asked about his training schedule, Leon replied "I'm basically trying to reinforce George Karl's coaching philosphy while also spending time on the side with each player individually, particularly the younger players and rookies. I think I'm getting a lot of progress from Julius Hodge, and I think I've helped him improve the perimeter aspect of his game." Julius Hodge is the Nugget's rookie that was drafted out of North Carolina State as the 20th pick of the draft. The 6'7 guard was well known for his versatility, but his mediore athleticism and perimeter shooting are things that Hodge definitely needed work on.

Julius Hodge wasn't the only new face to arrive in training camp. Lithuanian rookie Linas Kleiza and veteran point guard Earl Watson also joined the Nuggets. Kleiza was also drafted in the first round in the 2005 draft, but was originally drafted by Portland and was dealt for the Nugget's 16th pick, Jarrett Jack. Earl Watson was a free agent that signed with Denver during the off-season after doing a fantastic job as a back-up point guard, but the Nuggets already have point guard vets Earl Boykins and Andre Miller going on a solid rotation, so one would wonder where Watson fits in.

"I'm not here to worry about minutes, I'm here to help my team win," said Watson. "I signed with the Nuggets because I want to have the opportunity to win and get far in the playoffs. I have a feeling in my gut that this team is going to win a lot of games this season."

Nuggets Pounded By Pistons in Opener (108-95 Pistons)

Nuggets Boxscore
Pistons Boxscore

The Denver Nuggets were hoping to avoid a slow start, but it was the Pistons who were rolling on all cylinders. Both teams made their season debut but it was Detroit who walked out of the Pepsi Center with a win. Detriot outrebounded Denver 54-41, including 22 offensive boards. The Pistons starting frontcourt of Ben Wallace, Rasheed Wallace and Tayshaun Prince each combined for 14 offensive boards, which was how many offensive rebounds the Nuggets had in total. As a result, 5 Pistons scored in double figures, led by Rasheed Wallace and Chauncey Billups who had 21 and 19 points respectively.

Carmelo Anthony paced the Nuggets with 22 points and a career high 5 steals. Marcus Camby followed closely with 19 points on 8 of 10 shooting. Denver also got a double-double of 10 points and 12 assists from Earl Boykins off the bench and he commited only one of the Nuggets 23 turnovers, which was a startling contrast to starting point guard Andre Miller, who was completely out of synch and had 9 turnovers and only 3 assists. "I feel like I am to blame for our loss," said Miller after the game. "I made a lot of stupid turnovers that I normally wouldn't make."

"This was an ugly game for both teams," said George Karl, the Nuggets head coach. "Both teams turned the ball over a lot and we let the Pistons knock us around in the paint. It was an inexcusable effort from Marcus Camby and Kenyon Martin."

Coach Karl was nothing short from the truth, as Detriot already grabbed 8 offensive rebounds in the first quarter with minimal effort. The Pistons also uncharacteristically ran the fastbreak exceptionally well while building up a 20-6 lead and holding the Nuggets to 14% shooting. After Andre Miller was benched early for his erratic play, Karl inserted Boykins and rookie Julius Hodge into the lineup to drastically change the tempo to Denver's favour and even up the score 26-26 by the end of the first quarter. However, Detriot pulled away in the second quarter by causing Andre Miller to commit 5 early turnovers and pulling away with a 12-2 run, which resulted in a 56-45 halftime lead. The Pistons' signature defence also suffocated Denver to shooting only 33% and scoring only 19 points in the quarter.

The second half consisted mainly of scoring from each team's bigmen. Marcus Camby scored 10 points to match Rasheed Wallace's 9 points in the third quarter. Denver cut the lead to 6 points after a Voshon Lenard three pointer, but the Pistons managed to recover by dominating the inside and outmuscling the Nuggets in the paint. Antonio Mcdyess helped keep an 82-69 lead for the Pistons by scoring 6 of his 10 points while also grabbing all 4 of his offensive rebounds in the third quarter. Both teams struggled in the final quarter, but the Pistons would eventually lead 100-80 after a pretty alley-oop dunk by Tayshaun Prince during the 3 minute mark of the fourth quarter and was the exclamation point on the Pistons' dominate win.

Nuggets Seal the Deal on Jazz (85-78 Denver)

Nuggets Boxscore
Jazz Boxscore

After a disappointing start to the season by losing to the eastern conference champion Detriot Pistons, the Denver Nuggets knew that they had to bounce back and the perfect way to do it was against the Utah Jazz. Carmelo Anthony once again led Denver with 23 points and 12 rebounds. Kenyon Martin also bounced back from a mediocre game to absolute destroy the Jazz inside by scoring 19 points and grabbing 19 rebounds; 11 of which were from the offensive end. Denver also got a large amount of production off the bench. Swingmen Dermarr Johnson and Julius Hodge both had 10 points off the bench and Nene continued his stellar rebounding by adding 12 boards. The Nuggets shot a terrible 32% from the field, but the bigmen trio of Nene, Marcus Camby and Kenyon Martin combined for 45 of the Nuggets' stellar 69 rebounds and 19 of the Nuggets' 27 offensive boards.

"Our rebounding kept us in the game, we got a lot of second chance opportunities and that really helped us during the last few minutes of the game," said Kenyon Martin. "We just have to limit the other team's offensive rebounding. They caught up in to us near the end of the game because of that. We have to learn how to communicate better with each other defensively and chase after every loose ball."

Utah losses its first game of the season, but had a stellar performance by point guard Keith McLeod. McLeod suprised a lot of people with a 20 point, 5 rebound and 7 assist effort. Andrei Kirilenko, the teams best offensive player and shut down defender was ironically held to 7 of 18 shooting by Carmelo Anthony. Front court players Memhet Okur and Greg Ostertag matched Denver's frontcourt in terms of rebounding, but they played attrocious defence and let the Nuggets literally walk inside the paint. "Okur and Ostertag really let us down defensively," said an obviously furious Jerry Sloan. "They were obviously fired up and tried to win this game, and we let them walk all over us on the boards and on offence. They made Kenyon Martin look like Shaquille O'Neal. We also gave them 32 trips to the free throw line, and thank goodness they weren't making them tonight, because we would have been practically blown out."

Utah had it going early on in the game, knocking down their first three 3 point attempts, and held Denver to 10 consecutive missed shots. The Nuggets continued to fight and were agressively drawing fouls. This allowed the Nuggets to get a 21-19 lead after the first quarter despite shooting 35%. Andre Miller picked up three fouls immediately at the start of the second quarter, but instead of playing the usual backup Earl Boykins, Denver head coach George Karl suprisingly put rookie Julius Hodge to man the point. This led to good results, as Hodge quickly racked up 4 assists, but the Jazz re-took the lead after a Deron Williams jumper to make the score 34-32 and give Utah a brief lead. There was a tight battle between Carmelo Anthony and Andrei Kirilenko during the end of the quarter. Both players went head to head and Melo managed to score 8 points and AK-47 scored 6. Carmelo finished with 13 points and 6 rebounds by the end of the first half to help preserve a 42-40 halftime lead for the Nuggets.

Keith McLeod began to heat it up in the third quarter, scoring 9 points in quick succession. Both teams went back and forth and the pacing of the game escalated into a fast break frenzy. It wasn't until late into the fourth quarter when the Jazz took a short 74-72 lead, but it was all Denver afterwards. A steal and a dunk by Melo was quickly followed by another steal and a layup by Dermarr Johnson. Gordon Giricek hit two freethrows, but it was immediately answered by a nasty power dunk by K-Mart over Ostertag. A final floater by Carmelo Anthony put the lid on the Jazz, but Utah grew desperate and began to intentionally foul, sending Marcus Camby, Nene, and Carmelo Anthony to the line. Anthony and Nene missed a total of three freethrows, but the Jazz still were not able to convert those misses into points on the other end. McLeod made a meaningless jumper with 0.6 seconds left and the final score was 85-78.

K-Mart had a huge double-double tonight.

Carmelo Anthony was guarded agressively by Kirilenko....
but it was Anthony with the last laugh and the big shot to seal the game.
Giricek missed a ton of opportuities in crunch time.
Julius Hodge's agressiveness going to the rim impressed George Karl.
Dermarr Johnson with the sweet reverse lay-in.
McLeod scored from everywhere and did it all this game.
Andre Miller took much better care of the ball this game.
Nene continues his dominating rebounding off the bench.
Ostertag got tired of being dunked on and rejects Martin.
