Washington, DC – The Wizards gave their fans all they expected after beating the Spurs on the road. Although Washington managed to defeat the Heat already in the preseason, this time they totally destroyed the Miami Heat, that is 0-2 due to a loss at Chicago on the opening night.
The Wizards came out big, shooting 80% for the first few minutes. After 2.30 of play Washington already had a comfortable 10-0 lead. The Heat managed to score a few after that as Shaquille O'Neal posted 6 points and 3 rebounds. The Wizards were led by their backcourt. Arenas scored 7, Butler 5 and both of them dished out 2 assists. Posey and Jeffries had a little competition going late in the period, as they scored all the points in the last two minutes. Jeffries had 6 and Posey 5 points as the Wizards closed out the quarter with a 28-13 lead.
The game slowed down and the difference stayed around 15 points. Jamison and O'Neal led their teams in scoring, both dominating down low. Washington fell asleep due to the slow tempo and Miami got the best out of it. Led by Walker's and Haslem's 5 points the Heat finished the half with an amazing 12-0 run. The Wizards held a close 44-40 lead. Jamison and O'Neal were the key players at the half, Antawn with 10 points, 6 rebounds and 2 assists, Shaq with 14 points and 7 boards.
Although the Heat tied the game at 46 they never managed to get the lead. Washington pushed the tempo and managed to go ahead by ten. Gilbert Arenas was running the forces: He scored 8 points and dished out 7 assists in the period. Jared Jeffries supported him with 6 points. Guards Gary Payton and Dwyane Wade led their team with 6 and 5 points as the Heat fell behind 72-60.
The trio of Arenas, Butler and Jamison withered Miami's attempts of a comeback in the last quarter. They combined for 23 of the teams' 31 fourth-quarter points and outran the Heat, although Wade and O'Neal gave their best to stop them. The Wizards were 10/11 from the freetrow line in the final period and deserved the 103-80 victory.
Arenas was once again the player of the game with 23 points, 12 assists and 2 steals as Jamison and Butler supported him with 20 points each. Jamison added 10 rebounds, while 9 of those were offensive. Although scoring just 4 points Brendan Haywood did a great job in the paint defensively – he grabbed 7 defensive boards and swatted 7 shots. Shaquille O'Neal ended up with 24 points and 12 rebounds as he was the best player for Miami.
GAME NOTES:
- Brendan Haywood swatted away 7 shots, most of them in the third.
