Pistons basketball player dies during game
AUBURN HILLS, Mich. -- NBA center Elden Campbell of the Detroit Pistons died of heat stroke early Wednesday, the team said.
The 7-foot-0, 279-pound Campbell, 38, died at a park near his house, playing some street basketball with his friends.
"Elden was a blue-collar type of player who led by example with his tenacity on the court. I will always remember him sitting in the corner of the locker room after the game, spent, because he always had given it all he had. Because of that, the players respected him immensely. I will miss his friendship," Pistons player Chauncey Billups said.
His death came as dangerously hot weather continued to pose a problem for the central United States. Temperatures were expected to reach as high as 100 degrees in Detroit yesterday.
"I am deeply saddened by the news of Elden's passing. He had a profound impact on the landscape of professional basketball as a player. He also was a great teammate as well as a great friend. All the members of the Pistons family mourn his passing, and my heartfelt condolences go out to the entire Campbell family," Ben Wallace added.
In the 2004-05 season, Campbell played 40 games with New Jersey and Detroit, averaging 3.0 points and 2.3 rebounds.
He averaged 10.3 points, 5.9 rebounds and 1.1 assists in a 15-year career, with the Los Angeles Lakers, Charlotte Hornets, New Orleans Hornets, Seattle SuperSonics, New Jersey Nets and the Detroit Pistons.
"I'm very sorry to hear that Elden passed away. I've always had nothing but the utmost respect for him. My sympathies and condolences go out to his family. He will be greatly missed," Rip Hamilton said.
Rasheed Wallace said: "Elden was a loyal friend, an unselfish teammate and a quality human being. His strength and dedication lay at the core of our team. He was like a brother to me."
