June 28, 2005

NBA 2005 Draft Night

“It’s your night BABY!” said Mike Bulba but we called him Bubbles. Bubbles was Elijah Cocobee’s new agent. “We are going to make history tonight!” he yelled in the restaurant. Elijah, his father, Coach Capel, and Bubbles were having dinner at PF Changs just two hours before the 2005 NBA draft. The plan was to eat dinner and go back to Coach Capel’s house and watch what number Elijah was going to get drafted tonight.
Elijah is not your normal draftee. He’s a 6’4” point man. The last three years he’s been the talk of Richmond, Virginia leading the Virginia Commonwealth Rams to arguably three of there best seasons in school history. The last three years included two NCAA tournament invitations and one post season N.I.T. appearance. Elijah was a home grown product from Virginia Beach, Virginia. He was a part of the infamous four horsemen group at Tallwood High School that won 2 State Championships and was ranked number one in the country there senior year. The four horsemen were Jaryl Campos, Toussaint Manley, Jay Cruz, and Elijah Cocobee. The four are still the best of friends but all went there separate ways after high school. Jaryl went to become a North Carolina Tarheel. Toussaint got a basketball/volleyball scholarship to play at Ohio State University. Jay Cruz went to play basketball for the University of Hawaii. Elijah was not highly recruited as many scouts questioned his ability. He chose Virginia Commonwealth University because Coach Capel made him feel like he could play and make an impact on his team. Plus Eli wanted to be close to his dad.

The men are back from dinner and are watching the draft at Coach Capel’s house. They watch as they hear David Stern say “with the number one pick, the Milwaukee Bucks select Andrew Bogut from the University of Utah”. Coach Capel makes a comment “that kid is good, but I would’ve picked Williams”. The papers all said Cocobee would be late first round at the highest but ESPN had Elijah going mid first round on there website.

Elijah is a special case, if drafted he would be the first ever Filipino to make the NBA. His impact on the Asian community in the States and Asia would be overwhelming, so overwhelming that Nike signed him to a shoe deal just days before. His VCU jersey has sold more than a two million all over the world. He has done basketball camps in San Diego, Virginia Beach and Seattle. Those three cities have the largest population of Filipinos in the United States. Isaiah Thomas, VP of the New York Knicks, was once quoted as saying “when young players at the high school and college level say they want to play and be like Eli Coco, then you got some serious game”. Elijah knows the pressure of a nation on his back to be a good citizen and more importantly a better basketball player.

Hour and a half later:

David Stern says “with the 30th pick in the 2005 draft, the New York Knicks select David Lee from the University of Florida, this concludes the first round”.
Elijah’s palms are sweaty and he starts to pace the room. His father offers a few kind words and Bubbles tells him “keep your head up; we still can go in the second round…”
Elijah nods his head and says “I thought I did everything right”. The second round begins; Russ Granik starts it off by announcing “with the 31rst pick in the 2005 NBA draft, the Atlanta Hawks select Salim Stoudamire from the University of Arizona”. What feels like a lifetime later, Granik is heard in the background “with the 45th pick in the 2005 NBA Draft the Philadelphia 76ers selects Louis Williams from South Gwinnett High School...”
Elijah bolts out of the room and tells everyone he wants to be alone. He goes to the backyard and turns his IPod to his favorite song. The song that has always helped him through hard times. As Jay Z’s “Lucky me” comes on Elijah remembers what a long journey he has taken so far. He remembers after his mother’s death, his father pulled him aside and told him that it was just the two of them now. Eli remembers how his father retired from the Navy and had to look for odd jobs so that Elijah had nice things that other kids had. How his father got fired from being a security guard at the mall because he wanted to be there for Elijah’s final home game in high school. How he got injured that game and as he was being helped off the court, he watched as his father was cheering the loudest. He remembers his father holding his hand till the anesthesia sank in before his shoulder surgery. He remembers the ODU coach telling him that he should be thankful that they are offering him a scholarship and that he should sit for four years and get a degree and “start your life”. He remembers Coach Capel coming to the house and telling him he would be a star. He remembers those nights his dad was alone with a stack of bills but always had a smile when he was in the room. During VCU’s CAA title run in 2003, he remembers rushing to his father after he hit the game winning shot to beat JMU in the finals. He remembers the last game of this past season; he tore a muscle on a drive to the basket—he remembers looking for his dad. He remembers seeing his dad in tears as he was being helped off the court. He remembers signing that Nike contract and all the exceptions, like if he was picked in the first round he would get $850K plus the $250K signing bonus. But, if he was picked in the second round it turned into $400K and the signing bonus. If he didn’t get drafted, it would have been $150K and the signing bonus and the deal became for only 2 years. He remembers making his mother’s dream come true by getting his degree in three years. He remembers the individual work outs before the draft and Chicago. He remembers Daniel Ewing and how he lit him up all game in Chicago. Bubbles told him New York and LA were very interested and will take you in the first round. He remembers how he told his father he was going pro and his father told him he was old enough to make that decision. He remembers his father not even asking for a cent after he signed the Nike contract. But he remembers how happy his father was when Elijah came home from the bank and all his father’s debts were paid. The look on his fathers face after he bought him a 2005 Toyota Tundra.
Coach Capel comes out “Eli, don’t worry son: I know people. You’ll get your shot somewhere. You might need to play ball in Europe or the NBDL, but you’ll be playing ball next year” “Just keep your head up. Eli answered “I know coach, thanks” I might get my Masters degree and move back to Virginia Beach.”
Bubbles rushes outside “ELI YOU’VE BEEN DRAFTED!”Elijah and Coach Capel stood there in disbelief. Elijah’s father came running outside with a huge smile on his face. Elijah yelled “WHO DRAFTED ME?” Bubbles screamed “PACK YOUR BAGS, WERE GOING TO……………”
