Nuggets to a 2-0 Start

Image
Andrew Bynum scores his first NBA points

The Los Angeles Lakers had every opportunity to beat the Denver Nuggets in their season opener last night at the Pepsi Center, but failed to capitalise on opportunities, going down by seventeen points.

The encounter was close for the first three quarters, but the Lakers let Kenyon Martin run all over them in the paint, and the game broke open.

There was no coming back for the Lakers despite their best efforts, the huge margin allowing Andrew Bynum and Von Wafer some court time in the last minute. Wafer failed to register a point, while Bynum scored his first NBA points with a thunderous dunk.

The Lakers have to regroup quickly, with a game against the Suns at Staple Center tonight. Denver host Portland on Friday.[/i]

Odomination at Staples

Image
Kobe Bryant posterizes Shawn Marion

51 points from the Lakers' Lamar Odom helped them secure victory over the Phoenix Suns last night at Staples Center.

Running a simple double screen play for Odom most of the night worked wonders, as the Lakers ran set play after set play to completely negate the running game of the Suns.

The Lakers dominated early, but when Kobe Bryant left in foul trouble in the second, the Suns quickly closed the gap.

A timeout from Phil Jackson set up the play, and the Lakers ran the Suns off the floor with it all night.

Lakers over Nuggets
Image
Andrew Bogut
The LA Lakers started quick out of the block and never looked back, crushing the Denver Nuggets by fourteen points last night at Staples Center.

The two teams met just a week ago at the Pepsi Center, a game the Lakers lost by seventeen.

The game was close at three quarter time, but Kobe Bryant opened it up in the final term.

The Nuggets started to close the gap in the final minutes but the Lakers held on for the win.

Lakers Get First Road Victory

Image
Joe Johnson tried his hardest, but the Lakers came out on top

The Los Angeles Lakers acheived their forst road victory of the season last night, defeating the Atlanta Hawks by eight points.

Joe Johnson and Tyronn Lue drained three consecutive triples between them in the last minute, but the Lakers held fast and secured the game from the free-throw line.

The loss is not the only bad news, with Al Harrington likely to miss games with a back injury.

Although the Lakers won the game, Lamar Odom's free-throw shooting was a concern down the stretch, missing clutch free-throws to let the Hawks back into the contest.

Andrew Bogut got into foul trouble early, which escalated when he was called on to replace an injured Chris Mihm.

Mihm was able to return to the contest, and will be at full fitness for the next game.

Bogut, despite being the number one draft pick, and in the Lakers' starting five, still has a long way to go before he is able to become the lynchpin of a team's offence.

The Lakers are sticking with an outside-based offensive strategy, coupled with a fast running game, until Bogut shows enough improvement for the low post to become the focal point of their offense.

They have shown that they can deviate from this plan of attack, as against the Suns, but will only slow it down if the running game plays into their opponent's hands.

Bogut had promising stats of 25 points, five blocks and ten rebounds in 33 minutes, but will need to work on his ballhandling to decrease his turnovers, and will need to decrease his fouls.

The Lakers are putting him through a strict training process over the next three weeks, with assistant coaches Horatio Toomey and Alan Westcott.

The Lakers play Minnesota at the Target Center tonight.

Andrew Bogut Q&A

Andrew Bogut started his NBA career in a wave of cotroversy, verbally attcking fellow Australian and former NBA player Luc Longley, then current teammate Kobe Bryant. LA Baller catches up with the rookie from Australia.

Obviously, there's a question mark over whether you and Kobe Bryant can co-exist on the basketball court, after your comments about him pre-season. How do you two get on on and off the court?
Those comments, as I've said before, were taken out of context. The press does that, whether knowigly or not, and it creates misunderstanding. Phil (Jackson), Kobe and I all sat down after I got traded and had a talk. Phil's good at that sort of thing. He's had problems like this in the past, we're all fine about it now.
Speaking of Phil Jackson, it must be great to be playing under one of the all-time greatest coaches in your rookie season.
Yeah, it's good. He's a great guy. He understands that playing ball isn't just about the on court stuff. He works with us heaps on the off-court side of things as well. For example, on all the road trips he gives us all a book to read, which he thinks relates to our careers, as well as our lives in general. And believe me, on the most part, he's right.
You must admit though, Kobe's style of play is sometimes difficult to get used to, especially for newer players to the league.
Well, it certainly is when you're on the other team trying to stop him. Offensively, we have a gameplan, we stick to it. Everybody's happy, especially since it's a running game, so people get tired and the bench players get minutes.
You've still got a way to go by the sound of it, but Jackson said you may become the focal point of the offense?
Possibly. We're not ruling it out, but I've got a long way to improve until that happens.
Or maybe hope for Kobe to retire?
I hope you were only joking. If Kobe were to retire now, I might become the focal point, but it ain't happening.
In the pre-season you were ejected from a game after someone fouled you too hard and you got in their face. What dd you think of that?
I thought it little harsh, to be honest. All I did was get in his face, I mean, if i back off, I get labelled weak and targeted thereafter. Of course I was going to stand up for myself. If they'd given me a tech (technical foul) then yeah, maybe. But ejection? Sorry, but I don't agree.
The Lakers suffered a minor hccup early with the loss to Denver, but since then have won three straight. What do you expect from the Lakers this season?
Oh, I dunno. We take it one game at a time, we'll see what happens. If we don't make the playoffs I'll be extremely dissappointed, put it that way.
