Clippers Fall; Miller Makes Shots (88-77 Nuggets*)

Nuggets Boxscore
Clippers Boxscore

Andre Miller, who spent one season with the Clippers, stepped it up at both ends of the court after a brief wakeup call during a timeout in the fourth quarter. Andre Miller led the team by scoring 13 of his 22 points in the fourth quarter to go along with 5 assists and 6 rebounds. Kenyon Martin also provided a generous 18 point, 9 rebound performance, while shooting nearly 75% from the field. Carmelo Anthony finished with 14 points and 6 rebounds, but struggled shooting the basketball (5 for 15 from the field).

"We would not have pulled this this off without Miller," said Anthony. "When we struggled to create on offence, he would always be there trying to get us going. When most of us still struggled to hit shots, he put us on our backs and took matters into his own hands. You can tell that he decided to play with a chip on his shoulder in the fourth quarter."

Bobby Simmons led the Clippers in scoring with 20 points, while also limiting Carmelo Anthony to only 33% shooting. High school point guard Shaun Livingston showed some remarkable flashes of what was to come in the future with an amazing 14 point, 12 rebound and 6 assist performance. The Clipper's leading scorer and rebounder Elton Brand was another victim of Kenyon Martin's vicious interior defence, as he was limited to only 12 points and 6 rebounds.

Denver started off the game absolutely blazing from the field. They made 9 of their firt 10 attempts and shot 70% in the first quarter. Denver slowed down a great deal afterward. The Nuggets allowed the Clippers to go on an 8-0 run to close out the first quarter. Los Angeles' momentum on defence carried on to the second quarter as they allowed Denver to score only 10 points in the second quarter and limited them to a disappointing 17% from the field. Luckily, the Nuggets caught a break and the Clippers also only scored 13 points, allowing Denver to retain a 39-33 halftime lead.

Things started to go from bad to worse when the lead was chipped down to two points numerous times. It got even worse when Andre Miller picked up his fourth foul during the beginning of the third quarter. This meant that Miller had to sit out on the bench and watch the lead nearly slip away. With the score at 68-66 with 5 minutes left in the fourth quarter, Andre Miller was finally subbed in and began to redeem himself. Miller led the team to two consecutive 8-0 scoring runs and the Clippers eventually saw their chances of winning slip away.

Carmelo didn't score much, but he had a few nice jumpers

Thanks for the suggestion. He was of no need for my team anyway.

He looks like a nazi, good thing you released him.

 Yeah, he was a created player, so he looked really wierd.

he looks so sad...well thats life...good luck next game

They always look sad..... But hey, it's Mark Pope!

Well... maybe another team sign him... IMO you should take Jerome Moise or Lonny Baxter dude...
Also, I wish you a good luck in the next game.

I'm leaning towards Jerome too. He did shit for the Raptors, but I always like long athletic dudes with potential.

Denver Uses Roster Spot to Sign Parker

ImageS. Parker

The Denver Nuggets have announced today that they have contacted and come to terms with free agent guard William "Smush" Parker. A few days after the release of veteran big man Mark Pope, the Nuggets hoped to aquire a cheap free agent that could either help bolster their frontcourt, or sign a third-string point guard to back up Andre Miller and Earl Boykins. General manager Kiki Vandewegh was also close to consider signing Lonny Baxter, Jerome Moiso, Shammond Williams and Joseph Forte.

"We think that Smush belongs in the NBA," said Vandewegh. "We really needed this signing because of our lack of depth at the one spot. Smush has exellent point guard skills but can also play the shooting guard position. He'll be a great insurance in case Earl Boykins or Andre Miller are hurt. He might not be getting any big minutes now but I think that Smush Parker is young and talented enough to make an impact in this league."

"Whatever the coach wants, I'll do it," says Parker. "That's the type of attitude I'm going to bring to this team, and it doesn't matter if I get 2 minutes or 40 minutes, I'm going to play accept my role because I'm grateful to be here. I'm glad that a team, especially of Denver's caliber, has finally recognized me and is accepting me to be a part of their team."

The 6'4 Parker played college basketball at Fordham University and went undrafted. Parker signed a contract with the Cleveland Cavaliers in the 2002-2003 season. He averaged a solid 6.2 points per game and 2.5 assists per game in only 16.7 minutes, but Cleveland decided not to re-sign him. He was later signed by Atlanta, but did not play a single game there. Smush was recently playing the NBDL for the Florida Flame, where he averaged a team-high 19 points per game, 9.1 assists per game and 3 steals per game and was the first player in NBDL history to record a triple double.

Smush Parker is an exellent playmaking combo guard, but don't expect him to be getting any big minutes soon.

Denver Nuggets (2-1) vs Chicago Bulls (2-0)

Starting Lineups

Bulls Burned by Nugget's Role Players (94-78 Nuggets*)

Nuggets Boxscore
Bulls Boxscore

The Bulls had everything going their way until a few very unlikely heroes managed to rise to the occasion in the fourth quarter. Dermarr Johnson, Voshon Lenard and Wesley Person were all candidates for the starting shooting guard spot, but all of them knocked down shots down the stretch to eventually help Denver come out with a blow out win. Person, Johnson and Lenard all scored 8 points in the final quarter to account for nearly half the points that quarter. Other notable players were Earl Boykins, Nene and Marcus Camby, who was one point shy of a double-double. Nene has barely in scored in the first two games, but had finished with a productive 7 points and 8 rebounds, while the 5'5 Earl Boykins managed to cover for Andre Miller's offensive struggle with 9 points.

"We all were pushing each other really hard," said Lenard. "The three of us (Wesley Person, Dermarr Johnson, and Lenard), are always trying to beat each other out for the starting spot, so we bring out the best in each other." He later added "before, me and Person didn't really step it up and we were left on the bench, but after this game, I think we might have given Dermarr a little more competition. But there is no bad blood between us. All three of us are just here to compete and have fun, and we'll give props to whoever comes out as the starting shooting guard."

The Bulls have lost their first game of the season after losing key youngsters Eddy Curry and Luol Deng to injuries. The veteran big man Antonio Davis stepped it up greatly in the absence of Curry, and finished with 24 points and 11 rebounds. Othella Harrington also put in 8 points and 13 rebounds, while Kirk Hinrich had 14 points and 6 assists and rookie guards Ben Gordon and Chris Duhon also finished with 10 points each.

Denver made quick 6-0 run to start off the game, but the score would remain close for nearly the rest of the game. Ben Gordon scored all 10 of his points in less than 3 minutes during the first quarter of the game; showing everyone that he can put up large numbers in a hurry. Both teams tightened up their defence later on in the second quarter. Nobody shot over 40%, and the game quickly turned into a physical and instense game down low. Chicago finally took a 37-34 lead at the end of the first half when Chris Duhon hit a three pointer just before the buzzer sounded.

The third quarter spelled trouble for the Nuggets, when the game started off with an 11-2 run by the Bulls. The Bulls got a 57-47 lead in the middle of the third quarter, which was their first and only double-digit lead of the game. However, the Bulls experienced a sudden collapse right in the beginning of the fourth quarter, when the Nuggets went on a 6-0 run to close the game back to two points. Denver shot 73% in the fourth quarter and outscored the Bulls 39-15. The Nuggets managed to take the lead after a Wesley Person three pointer and never relinquished the lead. Both teams went back and worth on tiny scoring spurts, but the Nuggets knocked down some timely three pointers (all of them from Lenard, Johnson and Person) and Denver pulled away with an 89-78 lead with almost one and a half minutes remaining.

"Carmelo picked up some early foul trouble so coach Karl asked me to come in," said Wesley Person. "I played some really good defence, and I didn't score, but coach told that if I keep doing what I was doing that I would get some more minutes. During the final stretch, I knew it was my time to go in there and hit some big shots for the team."

In Game Pictures

Davis only had one block, but it was definitely a nasty one
Martin was pleading his case to the referees
Carmelo with the nice tomahawk
Davis looked like a super star with some of the moves he pulled on K-Mart.
Dermarr puts Chandler on his new poster

Wesley Person didn't look like he wants to be out of the rotation.
Nocioni tries to boxout Anthony
Kenyon Martin gives Davis the "I told you so" look after dunking on him in the final seconds of the game
Andre Miller had an off-night and was constantly watched over (even triple teamed at times!)

*Note:
I just wanted to know if you guys even spend the time to read the recaps that I put up? They can be pretty vague and repititive, and I'm looking for some constructive critiscm on my writing, so if you want to point out anything that doesn't really go well with you, please let me know and I'll try to improve my dynasty to the best of my ability.

Denver Nuggets (3-1) vs Minnesota Timberwolves (4-0)

Starting Lineups

Wolves Slaughter the Nuggets (99-81 Wolves*)

Denver Boxscore
Wolves Boxscore

On paper, it seemed that the trio of Kevin Garnett, Latrell Sprewell and Sam Cassell were a far more superior trio than Kenyon Martin, Carmelo Anthony and Andre Miller, and they definitely showed it this game. The "three headed monster" of Garnett, Sprewell and Cassell combined for more than half of the team's points. Kevin Garnett was absolutely unstoppable as he knocked down 11/18 shots for 24 points and 9 rebounds. Sam Cassell also had 23 points and 8 assists and sank 5 of 9 three pointers en-route for this blow out win. Latrell Spreewell also did a little bit of everything, getting 14 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists.

Denver's trio on the other hand, struggled mightly, and as a result, the Nugget's three game winning streak was snapped. The Nuggets shot below 40% for threee consecutive quarters and never led by a single point during this game. Carmelo Anthony seemed to be doing all the work as he managed to accumulate 24 points and 8 rebounds. Kenyon Martin had 14 points and shot a mediocre 39% from the field, but he contributed 9 rebounds. Andre Miller was solid offensively with 14 points and 5 assists, but Cassell walked all over him on defence. Both teams relied heavily on their big three, since no other player had scored double figures in the game other than Garnett, Sprewell, Cassell, Anthony, Martin and Miller.

"What can I say? We played terrible offence and defence," said head coach George Karl. "It's games like these that make coaching so stressful, but we just have to suck this one up, watch some film, get some practice, and be ready for the next game."

The first quarter was a sign of what was to come throughout the whole game. Denver trailed 28-17 after a dismal first quarter and Sam Cassell and Kevin Garnett already combined for 20 of the Wolves' 28 points. The Wolves were contained to only 16 points by the Nuggets in the second quarter, and they managed to make a dent into Minnesota's lead and trailed by 8 points during halftime.

A quick 10-2 scoring run during the middle of the third quarter by the Wolves quickly erased any hopes for the Nuggets, and the Nuggets found themselves in yet again, another tough 69-59 hole. Sam Cassell scored 12 points by himself this quarter and was the one responsible for triggering the run. The fourth quarter was basically a back and fourth affair, and the Nuggets eventually gave in to the Wolves to help them remain undefeated.

"He showed them why he was named the MVP before," Latrell Sprewell said of Garnett. "When Cassell and Garnett get hot, there's almost no other deadly inside/outside combination that can stop them."

Andre Miller made some successful post-up attempts on Troy Hudson

I think it's all very good here.

The recaps are good, the screens catch the best of the action and it all looks very clear. I usually like to read recaps but I skip them if I realize there's like five new ones. Then again if you want to play then you must post because it's no use having three recaps waiting.

Denver's 5 Game Report Card

Some of you might remember from my '05 Raptors dynasty that I had a monthly report card and I would hand out grades to each player based on their performance to help people catch up on what's going on. Well, I've decided to implement it into this dynasty except I'll be doing it every 5 games, mainly because some months like January have like two games while other months like December have like 9 games, so I think that 5 games is a decent stretch of time that I can write about. And so.....

5 Game Recap
Overall Record: 3-2
Teams played: Spurs (L), Pacers (W), Clippers (W), Bulls (W), Timberwolves (L)
Overall Grade: B

Overall, Denver has made a pretty decent start, beating the teams that they should be beating (Indiana, Los Angeles Clips, Chicago), but lost by a large margin to top playoff caliber teams (San Antonio, Minnesota). This isn't really a bad sign, but if they are planning on doing something big in the future, then they'll have to grab some wins against the top-tier teams.

The Nuggets started the season with a pretty bad loss to the Spurs. Kenyon Martin scored 20 points and also showed some great interior defence on Tim Duncan by locking him down to only 4 points, but Tony Parker and Manu Ginobili managed to make-up for it.

The Nuggets stayed positive though, and they immediately bounced back with a hard-earned 4 point win over the Pacers. Reggie Miller and Stephen Jackson knocked down some huge shots down the stretch, but Dermarr Johnson surprised a lot of people and came up big with a 17 point performance in that game, and Marcus Camby nailed the game winning free-throws to finish the game. Carmelo Anthony also played an instrumental role by answering many of Stephen Jackson and Reggie Miller's jumpers.

Andre Miller came in the next game against the Clippers with an explosion; he scored 13 points in the fourth quarter and led the Nuggets with a 22 point, 5 assist and 6 rebound performace to prevent the Clippers from ever making a comeback. Kenyon Martin continued his strong defensive play by limiting Elton Brand to 12 points, while also scoring 18 points on almost 75% shooting from the field.

Denver also had a very tough time against the Bulls for three quarters, and even though they were without Eddy Curry and Luol Deng, Antonio Davis stepped it up for Chicago by giving them a monster 24 point 11 rebound effort. That effort was in vain though, as shooting guards Wesley Person, Voshon Lenard and Dermarr Johnson all came up huge in the fourth quarter by knocking down three point shots and Denver outscored the Bulls 39-15 in the final quarter for a surprising blowout win.

After three straight games of winning success, the Nuggets were ready to take on the powerhouse Minnesota Timberwolves, but they were easily taken out of the game and struggled mightily from the field. The three headed monster of Kevin Garnett, Sam Cassell and Latrell Sprewell proved to be too much for the Nuggets to handle as they were the only players on the Wolves who scored in double figures. Cassell had 23 points and 8 assists while Kevin Garnett had 24 points and 9 rebounds.

The Grades

A: An extremely good player; this player is making a big difference whenever he's out there on the court. He's is playing at a very high level and has been playing almost flawlessly.

B: A good player; this player is playing well and is making a fairly large contribution to the team, but this player can make tiny improvements in some areas and step it up to take it to the next level.

C: A slightly below average player; this player isn't really focused or into it. He has some noticeable areas where he needs to work on, but it isn't a big deal, and hopefully he should return to a B type caliber player.

D: A bad player; this player is playing some pretty sloppy basketball and he really needs to snap out of it. He has been playing vastly underachieving basketball and definitely could use some improvement.

F: An NBDL scrub-type player. You should be asking yourselves why this player is even on an NBA roster (getting an F can be quite rare).

Players

Marcus Camby: C+ For the most part, Marcus Camby has played slightly below his normal stats, especially blocks, which are his forte. Camby has also yet to post a double-double either. This doesn't look like a bad sign though, since it's still very early in the season and Camby is probably just shaking off the off-season rust.

Kenyon Martin: B Kenyon has had some decent offensive games, but nothing special. Martin is currently second on the team in scoring (16ppg) and first in rebounding and blocks (9rpg, 2.2bpg). K-Mart is also making more than half of his shots (54%). Martin has basically mimicked his final year at New Jersey, but that doesn't really say much for a player that's getting paid a max contract.......

Carmelo Anthony: B+ Carmelo has continued to display his offensive talents and is the leading the Nuggets in scoring with 20.2 a night. His rebounding stats aren't too shabby either (6.2rpg). One thing that really stands out for Melo is his greatly improved shot selection (51% from the field and 47% from three). Carmelo could turn up his defence up a notch or three, because he's clearly letting opposing players get away with way too much scoring. Melo also needs to pass the ball some more for more assists, because he barely averages 2 assists per game.

Dermarr Johnson: B- Dermarr has had some ok games so far. His three point shooting is looking real sharp (50%), but he only averages 1.6 assists and 2.6 rebounds. He'll need to use his jumping ability and 6'9 frame a little more and try to get some rebounds. Johnson also needs to get more consistent and focused, because that 17 performance is still in the back of everybody's heads and won't be there for long.

Andre Miller: B+ Miller has been making this team run from behind the curtains. Carmelo and K-Mart are clearly the first offensive options, but Miller has been doing almost all of the decisions and play making. Miller has a fantastic 13 point-4 rebound-6 assist statline and is shooting 46% from the field. Very underrated. Very Andre Miller-esque.

NeNe: D NeNe has yet to prove that he can play behind Kenyon Martin and Marcus Camby. He has been getting some pretty good minutes off the bench, but he has a horrific 3.4 points per game and only shoots 42% from the field. NeNe also averages 5 rebounds a night, but it clearly isn't enough to beat out Martin or Camby and win the coach over.

Early Boykins: C+ The little 5'5 point guard has been providing a lot of energy off the bench, but his 6.4 ppg and 37% field goal percentage is something that definitely needs some improvement. It also wouldn't hurt if Boykins bumped his assist average up, because he only averages 2.2.

Voshon Lenard: C- Voshon Lenard has been beaten out of the starting lineup and is shooting an attrocious percentage. 29% from three just won't cut it, and getting 1 rebound per game is just awful. Lenard does look like he's slowly getting back into shape though, and his stroke looks like it's coming back to him.

Wesley Person: C Person missed the first two games of the season, but he was instrumental in his second game against the Bulls. Person still needs to shoot a little more effectively though, (29% from the field, 33% from three) to get some big time minutes.

The Question Marks

These players have yet to play a game or even touch the court for that matter, so we can not properly give them grades. They'll just have to sit this one out like they always do.

Smush Parker, Bryon Russell, Eduardo Najera, Greg Buckner, Luis Flores, Francisco Elson.

Well, that's when my idea, the player report card, comes in. If you miss any recaps or skipped any of them because they are too long, then you can just briefly read up on what happened so far (the games are divided into short paragraphs so you don't really have to read the whole 5 game recap).
