Adidas to buy Reebok

Thu Aug 04, 2005 2:55 am

German sports goods firm Adidas-Salomon says it has struck an agreement to buy US rival Reebok for 3.1bn euros ($3.8bn; £2.1bn).

Rest of the story

well, that is interesting. and i just bought some reebok shoes.

The takeover still needs to be approved by Reebok shareholders and competition authorities. If cleared, the deal should be completed in early 2006.

If that deal goes through, that'll be one hell of a merger. Reebok appeared to be declining with less ads and popularity, imo, but I have no idea if they were losing profit internationally, though.

Thu Aug 04, 2005 3:21 am

abok or reedidas?

Thu Aug 04, 2005 3:26 am

Probably one of the combinations of Adidas-Salomon-Reebok. Personally, I like Adeedok.

Wow,nice two sucky brands merge into one weak ass brand.

Thu Aug 04, 2005 4:10 am

Nike should merge with the Salvation Army and appoint them head shoe designer. At least then they'd have an excuse for their new shoes looking so shit.

omg i almost pissed my pants that was so funny.
you rock man.

imo adidas is the best brand because of there quality, looks and feel.nike on the other hand have good looks, not comfortable, and fall apart easy. i know from experience because i buy lots of shoes. the only reason why adidas is buying shitty reebok is because the sell to a larger market of poorer people. they arent changing the names i dont think but it will give adidas more money.

On the contrary, Adidas just bought up a piece of the shoe market. It was a good move for them marketwise, they broadend their horizons whereas Nike is stuck right where it was on the European market.

It's quite simple in fact.

Nike dominates the US market. Adidas was there, but not as dominant. Reebok was a minor player amongst these two.

Adidas dominates the European market. Nike is there, but not as dominant albeit they are trying by sponsoring a lot of soccer clubs. Reebok was non exsistant.

By buying up Reebok, they've taken a part of the NBA's market. This way they got a bit ahead of Nike.

Expect a move from Nike in the near future.

nike has a pretty big part of the european market too, they may not sponsor as much soccer teams, but look at the casual shoes.
i dont think adidas+reebok sells more than nike does with the air force 1's, shox, dunks and converses
and when i look at bball shoes, nike is more dominant too in europe but and1 rules the market with all the wanksters around here.

Very interesting deal. Sort of like a bigger, better counter-move after Nike bought Converse.
By the way, Reebok will still be Reebok for years to come; they'll just operate under the watchful eye of Adidas (just like Converse and Nike).

I don't understand how Nike still has such a strangehold on the shoe market. Their products have been below sub standard for a while now. For some reason putting something that looks like a kitchen curtain from the 1950's on a strap across the middle of the shoe is "fashionable". It's rubbish, bring back the 90's (N)

Thu Aug 04, 2005 7:17 am

Well having the top performing athletic shoes on the market works wonders (even if their overpriced).
Also that they have most of the retro market in a tight grip isn't too shabby.

But LeBron is signed for them! And he can jump rrreally high! That makes them great.

I hate it when companies endorse sub-standard products using athletes and morons buy it. Yuk.

I liked Adidas but I hate Reebok everything. It seems it's made even more cheap than Nike!!! (N)

I like Nike and Adidas but like Jackal said, expect a move from Nike in the near future because this is a big move for Adidas.

Only recently have the soccer players been wearing Nike. It was Adidas all the way before that. It was on the news today, you might've picked it up at 6 or 8, if you watch the news that is.

They used Germany vs Holland as examples.

Nike has their share of shoes that look like a pile of vomit, but they still have some pretty sick-looking shoes (I've had my eye on the Shox Bombers even though they're so expensive). And they always have creative ads with premiere athletes to star in them. I don't care what you say, LeBron's shoes look very appealing to buyr when you see LeBron in them dunking left and right in a commerical. And people are always going to buy Jordans.

And does anyone know who created "And1"? A couple of really white guys from Pennsylvania.

My last three shoes have been AND1, mainly because of the price and looks. It looks way better than the Nikes these days, and cheaper, too. I think the AND1 Mix Tapes have a lot to do with their popularity, as well.

Thu Aug 04, 2005 11:25 am

AND1 is a division of Nike though. Just like Converse is a division of Nike. So Reebok will probably still stay as Reebok.
