Recently acquired from Atlanta leads team

CLEVELAND, Nov. 3 (Ticker) -- They're limping. They're aching. They're wearing casts. And somehow, the Indiana Pacers are 1-0.

Stephen Jackson and Reggie Miller scored 25 points each and Jermaine O'Neal added 24 points and 6 rebounds as the banged-up Pacers opened the season with a 114-98 win against the Cleveland Cavaliers on Wednesday night.

LeBron James posted 33 points and added 10 rebounds, while Zydrunas Ilgauskas added 18 points and nine rebounds for Cleveland.

"This was a big win because we were without good guys, like Ron (Artest) or Dale (Davis)," Tinsley said. "But we stuck together and made things happen."

Jeff Foster added 8 points for Indiana and sank a crucial dunk with 54.6 seconds left in the third quarter to put the Pacers ahead.

After Austin Croshere (3 points) lost control of the ball, Fred Jones picked it up in the corner and drained his 3.

"It just rolled to me," said Jones, who was interrupted by Croshere.

"That was a pass, Fred," Austin joked.

The Cavaliers made two turnovers before pulling within a point on Robert Traylor's two free throws with 23.9 seconds remaining in the second quarter. Jones then hit two free throws to put Indiana up 56-53 with 12.1 seconds to go.

LeBron was short on another 3 and Tinsley put it away by making two free throws with 4.8 seconds remaining.

James felt like the Cavaliers let one slip away.

"We didn't execute down the stretch," he said. "We gave up a lot of easy buckets. Too many turnovers, too many missed shots. It was just a tough loss."

Anthony Johnson added only 2 points and 1 rebound; and Jonathan Bender added 4.

Cleveland got only two points and 3 assists from Ira Newble and 4 points and 1 rebound from Jeff McInnis.

The Pacers used a 20-2 in the third quarter to finish the game.

Game notes

  • Cleveland dropped to 8-27 in season openers
  • Opening night was much different for James than a year ago when 370 media credentials were issued in Sacramento and TV cameras followed his every move. "I'm more relaxed," James said, dressing before the game. "I'm still going to have jitters, but now I know what to expect."
  • Recently acquired from Sixers, Cavaliers point guard Eric Snow had his streak of 225 consecutive starts -all with the Philadelphia- snapped
  • Tinsley picked up his 1,500th career assist in the third quarter.

Indiana (1-0) at Boston (0-1) 7:30 pm EST

BOSTON (Ticker) -- The Boston Celtics look to avenge a first-round sweep in last season's playoffs when they host the Indiana Pacers at the FleetCenter on Friday.

Boston has lost four consecutive home games against Indiana and seven straight overall, including playoffs.

The Celtics opened their season with a 93-84 loss to the Philadelphia 76Ers on Wednesday.

After trailing by as many as 14 points in the second quarter, Boston rallied for a 53-51 lead at halftime and opened the third quarter with a 20-6 run. The Celtics led by as many as 14, before Allen Iverson and Andre Iguodala led a Philadelphia rally in the final period.

Paul Pierce had 25 points, 9 rebounds and five assists for Boston, while falling to 5-5 in its last 10 season openers.

Gary Payton, who was acquired in an offseason trade with the Los Angeles Lakers, was held to just four points and dished out eight assists in his regular season debut.

On Wednesday, Indiana won its third straight season opener with a 114-98 victory over Cleveland.

Jermaine O'Neal scored 24 points for Indiana, adding six rebounds. Offseason adquisition Stephen Jackson and veteran Reggie Miller posted 25 each.

On Friday, Indiana will play without Dale Davis, John Edwards and Ron Artest.

Indiana extends winning streak vs. Boston

BOSTON, Nov. 5 (Ticker) -- The Indiana Pacers are battered and bruised. They're also 2-0 for the first time in nine years.

After scoring 25 points against Cleveland, Stephen Jackson scored 27 this time, and Reggie Miller had 31 to lead the Pacers past the Boston Celtics 117-98 on Friday night.

Indiana extended its winning streak against Boston to eight games, including a four-game sweep in the first round of the playoffs last season.

"We just have to try and maintain," said Jackson, who scored 16 points after halftime.

Jermaine O'Neal shot 7-of-9 from the field and 6-of-7 from the free-throw line.

The Pacers have won their first two games of the season for the first time in nine years, while Boston is 0-2 under new coach Doc Rivers.

"This is getting old already and it's only been two games," said Rivers, who has watched his team squander a late lead in both games. "We've just got to get tougher."

Antoine Walker finished with 33 points and Gary Payton added 18 for Boston.

Paul Pierce, guarded by Jackson for most of the game, was held to only 10 points on 3-of-12 shooting. Pierce had 25 in a season-opening loss to Philadelphia on Wednesday night.

The Celtics led after halftime, but Indiana took the lead for good with 10:34 remaining in the third quarter on Jonathan Bender's 3-pointer (he finished with 10 points). An Austin Croshere's layup (he posted 11 off the bench) capped a 18-4 spurt.

The Pacers were outrebounded 14-9 on the offensive end. Indiana guard Jamaal Tinsley had only 8 points but added 8 assists.

Boston's Raef LaFrentz finished with 11 points and 7 rebounds in his second game of the season.

"We have been playing great in the first half and then slack up in the third," he said. "I think it's just mental. We need to be mentally tough."

Pierce's jumper with 1:45 left in the second gave the Celtics their biggest lead of the first half at 63-60 (this half finished with that score).

Game notes

  • Celtics rookie Delonte West scored his first career points on two free-throws with 4:31 remaining in the first half (he didn't score against Philadelphia)
  • Payton is 13 points shy of 20,000 career NBA points

Chicago (0-1) at Indiana (2-0) 8:00 pm EST

INDIANAPOLIS (Ticker) -- The Chicago Bulls will have little time to practice when they visit the Indiana Pacers on Saturday.

Othella Harrington scored 18 points for the Bulls and Kirk Hinrich 14, but that wasn't enough as Chicago lost, 95-112, to the New Jersey Nets, team who led most of the game thanks to Vince Carter's 34 points. Jason Kidd added 15 and 13 assists.

The Pacers have opened the season with two road victories (over Cleveland and Boston) and will play their home opener against the Bulls.

O'Neal was listed as doubtful going into Friday's 100-94 win over the Boston Celtics, but the All-Star forward scored 20 points.

Stephen Jackson is averaging 26.0 PPG in Pacers' 2 games.

Indiana was 3-1 against Chicago last season.

Nice stuff you've got going here. Not too flashy but not too simple either. It's nice.

Perhaps a few more pictures (thumbnailed?) would be nice other than that it looks awesome. I really like the header images you're using. Those look smoothe.

Stephen leads with 33

INDIANAPOLIS, Nov. 6 (Ticker) -- Given their rash of injuries early in the season, the Indiana Pacers' 3-0 start may come as a surprise to some.

Not to Stephen Jackson.

"We have 15 guys who can play basketball," he said. "We know how to play."

With some players playing with injuries, a group of players went on a big run to extend Indiana's lead in the Pacers' 103-98 win over the Chicago Bulls on Saturday night.

Jackson hit his 2 3-pointers during a 20-4 spurt in the third quarter, and he led the way with 33 points and seven rebounds to help the banged-up Pacers open the season with three straight wins for the first time since 1995-96.

"I don't think we're supposed to lose to nobody," Jackson added.

Reggie Miller (22 points, six assists) got a layup, then Tinsley stole the inbounds pass and shot a wide open 3-pointer that gave Indiana a 85-77 lead to close the third.

Jonathan Bender (7 pts.) then made a driving layup, and Fred Jones added a incredible windmill dunk to give Indiana a 5-point advantage.

Bulls coach Scott Skiles crouched on the sidelines, rubbing his forehead in frustration.

"Usually it's only a matter of time before they pull away," Skiles said. "They pulled away. We fought back, we just didn't have enough for them."

Image
Bender dunks, Chandler can't stop.

It's been a rough start for the Bulls, who were coming off a 92-115 loss to New Jersey on Friday.

Chicago committed 15 turnovers and made just 20 of 53 shots (37 percent) in the first half, shooting 18 of 30 in the second (60 percent).

Kirk Hinrich, again, was impressive for Chicago. The sophomore from Kansas had 21 points on only 5-of-16 shooting (adding 9-of-10 free throws) and ten assists to lead the Bulls.

"It's a simple game for Kirk," Skiles said. "He's one of those guys that shoots when he's open and passes when he's covered. I know that sounds ridiculously simple, but there are a lot of guys in the league that don't know that."

Pacers rookie David Harrison played his first game of the season. In 9 minutes he didn't score.

Bulls' rookie, Ben Gordon, shot 9-of-19 for a total of 20 points and three rebounds.

"It is tough when their main guys are getting breathers and those guys come in and hold up the fort," said Gordon.

Jermaine O'Neal, who finished third in the MVP voting last season, finished with 21 points and 11 rebounds.

"I think it's definitely attributed to the strength of our team," O'Neal said of the team's fast start. "This is becoming a trademark for this team."

Game notes

  • Bulls forward Andres Nocioni left the game in the third quarter with a bruised back but he returned in the fourth. In the game he scored 6 points.
  • The Pacers unveiled their 2003-04 Central Division championship banner.
  • The Bulls have lost 13 straight at Indiana.
  • Bulls forwards Eddy Curry and Luol Deng scored 15 points each for Chicago.
  • Jackson is averaging 28.3 points in Pacers' 3 games.
  • Forward Marcus Haislip, recently signed by the Bulls, played only 3 minutes, grabbing 2 rebounds.

Jamaal Tinsley Interview

By Bixbite | Nov. 9, 2004

Indiana Pacers point guard Jamaal Tinsley was born and raised in New York City. Our General Manager Bixbite recently met with Tinsley for an exclusive interview about growing up.

Bixbite: You're from New York. What exact part of Brooklyn?

Jamaal Tinsley: Bedford-Stuyvesant, between Marcy and Tompkins.

Bixbite: When did you first start playing ball?

Jamaal Tinsley: I started when I was about six, playing in 305 park. As a kid, just going there every night, late at night, and in the morning. Just playing basketball all day, that's all I wanted to do.

Bixbite: Your brothers and sisters, did they play?

Jamaal Tinsley: They were into other things. I got three brothers, four sisters. My older brother, he's pretty good, but he never really took it serious.

Image

Bixbite: How early were you playing actual organized ball?

Jamaal Tinsley: When I was six I started playing in pre-teen. Where I grew up at, it was a little 12-and-under tournament. When I started traveling, I was like eight, seven, playing AAU. And every since then, just been playing.

Bixbite: For high school, you were all over the place.

Jamaal Tinsley: The last one was Tilden.

Bixbite: Run through the schools you bounced to.

Jamaal Tinsley: Man, I started at Prospect Heights. Bounced around. Grover Cleveland. Eastern District. Cleveland-Ohio, a school out there for a year. Then Tilden. Then a GED program. So, I've been around.

Image

Bixbite: What's the main reason you switched around so much?

Jamaal Tinsley: Just not focused. Caught up in the streets, hanging out, not going in the right path, basically.

Bixbite: In high school, who were some of the known names you played with or around?

Jamaal Tinsley: Stephon (Marbury), we were on the same AAU team, Brooklyn, USA. Allan Griffin. Trevor Diggs. All on that team.

Bixbite: In your high school years, out of the gym, which parks were you playing at?

Jamaal Tinsley: Everywhere. West 4th. 68th, the Pro-Am tournament. Rucker. Soul in the Hole. That's it, mainly, in New York City.

Image

Bixbite: Does any one game back in those days stand out in your head? A really memorable run?

Jamaal Tinsley: I got so many, I can't... lot of games I had fun out there, just doing what I want to do, and playing like everybody want to see the game played out there on the court. It's entertaining out there on the Harlem court. And basically just going out there and playing, just trying to get the fans involved.

Bixbite: How'd you decide where to go to college?

Jamaal Tinsley: I started from the bottom. And Iowa State was the bottom. Once I went there, I just felt at home. So, I just stayed. Turned down Kansas, UNLV, Utah, TCU, Clemson; I had top schools come in. I felt at home once I got there.

Bixbite: What's your most memorable college experience? A game, or a general feeling, or anything.

Jamaal Tinsley: That was probably one of the best moves, by me going there. Helped me in school, off the court, basketball, coach he was very demanding, and it helped me out a lot to get to the next level. So, it was good that I made the right decision, instead of the wrong decision that some people make. It was a good experience, going to college, to the midwest, the cornfield. It was a good experience for me.

Bixbite: Are there guys you played with in the past who you think had the talent to make the pros who didn't get here?

Jamaal Tinsley: (Laughs) It's a lot. People I walk with, sometimes when I'm in New York City, I have them come see me, at home. It's a lot of them. I got three or four of them around me every other day that could have been here. But things just didn't work out.

Buzzer beater saves Pacers

MINNEAPOLIS, Nov. 9 (Ticker) -- It sure looks as if it's going to take more than a bunch of injuries and a shot clock to stop the Indiana Pacers.

Stephen Jackson made a 3-pointer with 0.5 seconds remaining to help the unbeaten Pacers hold off the Minnesota Timberwolves 119-118 on Tuesday night.

Latrell Sprewell (32 points) and Troy Hudson (19 points) led Minnesota in the last quarter; the Wolves posted a 13-2 run with 8:11 remaining. But the Pacers (4-0), with several reserves seeing extensive playing time, also proved they've got plenty of capable bodies on the roster.

Fred Jones, Jeff Foster and Anthony Johnson, all played at least 17 minutes. This 3 players helped Jermaine O'Neal and Stephen Jackson post a 14-4 spurt, to tie the game at 105.

The Timberwolves missed two late chances to be ahead in the scoreboard. Kevin Garnett's shot got blocked by Jonathan Bender (with 53.1 seconds remaining) and Sam Cassell's shot got blocked too but by Reggie Miller (30 points, 8-of-12 3-pointers).

"It was a huge game for Reggie," Rick Carlisle said. "We had strength and luck. We couldn't win this one without luck."

JO dunking over Kandi Man!

Sprewell could convert a 23-footer from the wing to put the score 117-116 for Minnesota, but he missed it (Indy was winning 116-114). Foster grabbed the rebound but Cassell got a steal and passed to Fred Hoiberg who finally made the wished 3-pointer.

Now, with the scored 117-116 for Minnesota, Wally Szczerbiak went for a shot but got fouled by Bender. Szczerbiak made 1 of 2 free throws to put Minny 118-116 with 3.1 seconds remaining. Timeout for Indiana.

Jamaal Tinsley (17 points) passed the ball to Miller, who passed it to Jackson, who shot the 3-pointer over Trenton Hassell for the win.

  • Indiana got 23 fouls when Minnesota got 18.
  • Sam Cassell played Timberwolves' 4 games from the bench, when he was starter last season.
  • Sprewell, whose complaints last week about his lack of a contract extension brought him heavy criticism, whirled around during a first-quarter timeout when a fan behind the bench taunted him. Sprewell yelled some obscenities before returning to the court. Security gave the man a brief lecture on etiquette. "When you pay you have a right to do things," coach Flip Saunders said, "but that doesn't mean it's right."
  • According to Rick Carlisle's system, looks like Pacers forward Jonathan Bender it's not fitting well in the lineup. In the next game Bender will go to bench and Carlisle will give rookie David Harrison a chance as starting center (moving O'Neal to forward); and if he continues in this way the team will trade him.
