Miami Heat - Los Angeles Lakers !!!

Tue Feb 15, 2005 3:54 am

Miami (21-7) at LA Lakers (14-11) 3:00 pm EST

Image Image

LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- Not much holiday cheer is expected to be spread at the Staples Center on Christmas when Shaquille O'Neal leads the Miami Heat into arguably the most anticipated regular-season game of the season against Kobe Bryant's Los Angeles Lakers.

The "rivalry" that existed between O'Neal and Bryant when the two teamed up to lead the Lakers to three straight titles from 2000-02 has only intensified since Los Angeles fell to Detroit in five games in the 2004 finals.

Despite being the top players in the Lakers' title runs and creating the league's first powerhouse of the new millenium, the two superstars seemed intent on parting ways in the offseason. O'Neal was shipped to Miami in a four-player swap, Bryant was inked to a massive contract by Los Angeles and two new paths were forged with even greater scrutiny from media and fans alike.

While O'Neal has continued his winning ways in Miami, leading the Heat to the best record in the Eastern Conference on the strength of 4 straight wins, Bryant has lived under a microscope as most wonder if he can survive a winner without O'Neal.

Bryant has for the most part despite being hounded by negative publicity. The Lakers have lost 4 of the last 5, after a start of 9-6.

Perhaps looking ahead to Saturday's matchup, Los Angeles got another loss, this time against the New Orleans Hornets, 103-118, on Wednesday.

Chucky Atkins scored 24 points and Bryant added 39 in the win. Caron Butler, who came to the Lakers along with Lamar Odom and Brian Grant in the O'Neal trade, produced 15 points and six rebounds but garnered a one-game suspension for punching Hornets guard Dan Dickau.

Butler will serve the suspension Saturday, missing his first shot at the team with which he spent his first two seasons.

The Heat are flying high after a come-from-behind 110-105 victory over the Sacramento Kings on Thursday in the first half of their two-game road swing.

O'Neal recorded 17 points and 14 rebounds, and Dwyane Wade added 13 and 6.

Stan Van Gundy, Miami's second-year coach, inserted Damon Jones into the starting lineup in the start of the season and moved Eddie Jones to the small forward spot.

All eyes will be on O'Neal and Bryant.

Raptors released him yesterday
Heat Sign Zo

MIAMI, Dec. 26 -- The Miami HEAT announced today that they have signed seven-time NBA All-Star Alonzo Mourning in an attempt to revive his NBA career.

“We look forward to Alonzo joining the Heat again," Stan Van Gundy said. "Hopefully he will be able to resume his career and play at the high level he has in the past.”

“I am feeling great and I'm very excited," said Mourning. "This will be, likely, my last season. I'm very happy that I can retire in my team."

Mourning, who was released by Toronto yesterday, played in 7 games for the Raptors this season. On December 19, 2003, Mourning underwent kidney transplant surgery in which he was given a kidney donated by his cousin.

A 12-year NBA veteran, Mourning posts career averages of 20.0 ppg, 9.7 rpg and 2.98 bpg in 634 games with Charlotte, Miami and New Jersey. Drafted by Charlotte in the First Round (2nd overall pick) of the 1992 NBA Draft and selected to the All-Rookie First Team, Mourning was a seven-time NBA All-Star, a two-time NBA Defensive Player of the Year (1998-1999, 1999-2000), a member of the All-NBA First Team in 1998-99 and Second Team in 1999-2000, a two-time member of the All-Defensive First Team (1998-99, 1999-2000) and was the winner of the J. Walter Kennedy Citizenship Award in 2001-02.

Mourning was also a member of the gold medal winning 2000 Team USA Olympic Team and was named the 2000 USA Basketball Male Athlete of the Year.

HEAT Community Affairs: Education Activities

HEAT Academy
Recognizing the need for children to receive extra exposure to academics, particularly math and reading, the Miami HEAT has embraced the importance of providing children with the opportunity to have quality after-school programs in South Florida.

Through a collaborative partnership with Miami-Dade County Public Schools and the HEAT Group corporate partners, the Miami HEAT has teamed up to facilitate HEAT Academy at three local inner city schools, Paul Laurence Dunbar Elementary, Little River Elementary, and Riverside Elementary.

At HEAT Academy students practice math and reading skills through a unique curriculum that introduces hands-on thematic lessons; get assistance with homework; have a safe place to be when their parents are not available; and most importantly, learn from positive role models who inspire kids to excel.

Image

HEAT Academic Scholarships
In conjunction with the Miami HEAT Family Outreach Charitable Fund, the Miami HEAT offers $10,000.00 in scholarship funds to high school seniors each year. Scholarship applications are available in December each year and recipients are awarded in April. This is the eighth year that the Miami HEAT has offered scholarships. Scholarships are awarded based on academic performance and outstanding community service.

Image

Read To Achieve
The Miami HEAT promotes the value of reading and encourages children and families to read regularly through the Read to Achieve program. Derived from the National Basketball Association, the Miami HEAT's local Read to Achieve program incorporates a combination of special monthly reading "time-outs", book giveaways, and the creation of designated reading locations - most recently in January, 2004 was the creation of a HEAT Reading and Learning Center at one of our three HEAT Academy locations, Dunbar Elementary.

Program Duration: Year-round.
