Re: NBA JAM All-Star Edition

Postby bigh0rt on Mon Feb 22, 2016 11:06 pm

Okay,

So I scratched my NCAA itch for the year, and have now begun to scratch my Arcade itch. Last winter I released an NBA JAM mod featuring many classic teams and players, courts, so on and so forth. But then I thought, there are tons of great players whose teammates were just so garbage, that I wouldn't take the time and effort to put their team(s) into the game, and may never get to use them. So then it dawned on me, what if I take each All-Star team from the last 10... 20... 30 years, split each into two separate 6-player squads, and include them all into one giant NBA JAM 2K14 All-Star Edition mod? Well, as luck should have it, that's exactly what I'm doing.

So far I have imported East and West rosters from 2008 through 2016 from the individual URB Season rosters, so this mod will be 100% entirely compatible with the URB mod, and require you to download it in order to have appropriate cyberfaces, uniforms, courts, and so on. Think of it as an Arcade extension for those who enjoy that style of play.

I have several ideas I'm kicking around, depending on what level of assistance I'm able to get from the community. They include:
- custom tunedata.iff for an Arcade style of play, exaggerated dunks, shot ranges, etc.
- Big Head Mode (if anyone knows how to edit the Global to edit head size)

I will release a small Beta at some point in the near future, with just some teams, so everyone can get a sense of what I'm trying to achieve. I think you'll enjoy it. Thanks, as always, for the support.

This sounds real good bro, especially showcasing the superb, redone all-star jerseys you've been making.

The nicest part is all I need to do, file-wise, is copy one teamXXX.iff file, rename it 100+ times, and bundle that. Every other graphic file is out of my hands, which is great. I'm just building the roster, and a lot of that is copying/pasting.

I'm also, as I did with my previous NBA JAM release, editing all Skill Ratings to be rounded to the nearest Ten, mimicking an arcade-style 1 - 10 rating, and will be tweaking Tendencies to make them play faster, looser, and more open.

Also, once I knock out the All-Star teams, I want to add as many Team USA iterations as possible. I know there's been some great uniforms made by them, but if someone can point me to them, that'd be great. I plan on making some myself, but any that are already done and good would be extremely helpful.

If any of the talented Global editors here in the community know if it is possible to Globally increase the sizes of heads, and would be willing to share that information and/or do that to a Global I can share within this mod, please let me know, as it would be greatly appreciated, and I think be really cool for the mod to have included in it. Always enjoyed 'Big Head Mode' in the original NBA JAM and subsequent releases. Thanks. (Y)

Never liked the real NBA JAM, never understood the fascination with it to this day. NBA Street on the other hand, that game had some meat to it, although I still prefer sim style games. I'll have to try this out when it is released.

You can certainly play Blacktop Mode with this mod (I've tried it with what I've done so far with no issues). I'm hoping to have a tunedata.iff specifically tweaked for enhanced Blacktop Mode as well.

I'm not sure you can edit the global to make all the heads bigger. I think you have to edit every single headshape, but I need somebody to back up me because I'm not really sure of it.

I'm pretty sure that the headshape size is locked to the cyberfaces themselves, as there are only body models in the global file. (which explains why if you apply a player with a nonexistant CF, there's no head and no specific arm textures, but the rest of the body is still there

Without NBA Jam, there probably wouldn't be an NBA Street. As much as I love the sim games, I've always been a fan of NBA Jam as well, because of its pick-up-and-play style, and the change of pace it offers. There's always room for both sim and arcade games in the market, and I personally enjoy Jam for the alternate experience it provides. NBA Jam: On Fire Edition is probably the best arcade basketball game ever made, due to the implementation of Real AI borrowed from the Fight Night series. But to each their own.

I agree Andrew. It's probably more of an age disparity than anything at all. The original NBA JAM came out when I was in I think 2nd or 3rd grade, so I grew up with it, and agree on all counts. If Amber is younger, and NBA Street was released around the same time for her youth, then it captures that same nostalgia, etc. Then, when you compare it to Jam, from a graphics sense, so on and so forth, I can understand preferring it. I enjoyed Street, but for me there's nothing better than NBA JAM. I burned my eyes out playing that game. Looking up codes for secret players in the unbelievably early days of the internet. It brings back nothing but awesome memories.

All this being said, I've run into some crashing issues that I hope to work out. Something is afoot in the Teams tab...

Would it also be possible to include teams composed of players that competed in the yearly dunk contests and 3 point contests as bonus teams as well?

So far I have every All-Star team from 2002 through 2016 in. That's two East teams and two West teams for every season, totaling 60 All-Star teams, in addition to two teams each for the 2012 USA Olympic Team, and the 1992 USA Dream Team, for 64 total teams. I'm going to continue, but will probably release a Beta for you guys to screw with soon and provide feedback for.

Uncertain. Depends if I decide to edit the Tendencies first or not. Ratings have been converted, but I haven't looked at Tendencies at all.

Will the arenas/courts be like the original Jam, or like the Remix Tour/Vs Legends in the newer versions?

They are the courts and arenas taken directly from the URB. For the USA teams, they are the Olympic courts made by retroman.

BETA 1.1 RELEASE

Installation Steps

Fully Install U R Basketball Mod
Fully Install NBA Jam 2K14: All-Star Edition (.iff files)
Fully Install NBA Jam 2K14: All-Star Edition Roster & Settings

Any and all feedback is always appreciated

So, I added two 2014 FIBA Team USA squads, in addition to tuning up some of the player and team gear and colors, and some of the tendencies on the more recent All-Star teams. Also, I fully implemented the 2015-16 Milwaukee Bucks, Chicago Bulls, Orlando Magic, and Minnesota Timberwolves. Added custom dunk packages, custom tendencies, custom Signature Skills, the whole shebang. Those teams play like the game ultimately should within this mod. Please test them out, report any bugs, let me know if any teams don't have crowd files, etc. I'm open to suggestions, feedback, rating adjustments; anything really. I'm still looking for suggestions on appropriate Arcade Starting 5s for many teams, along with some explanation (i.e., Zach LaVine starting for Minnesota because he's a Dunking freak). I'd like to get all teams added, clean up all the All-Star teams I've already added, and add the remaining All-Star teams. It's a process, to do it correctly, so I'll just keep doing a few teams at a time and go from there.

Enjoy.
