Knicks reach two-year, $16 million deal with Arron Afflalo

Arron Afflalo will sign a two year deal with the Knicks. His option on the second year. $16 million total.

Afflalo, and eight-year NBA veteran, had shown a lot more offensive game for a rebuilding Orlando team, where he averaged 18 points a game in 2014. His defense is solid, although maybe not as good as his reputation. Last season he started the season in Denver then was traded to Portland in what seemed a smart mid-season acquisition — Afflalo was to backup Wesley Matthews and provide depth on a team that needed it. Then Matthews tore his Achilles and Afflalo was forced to start, where he never found a real comfort level but did shoot 40 percent from three.

This is a good deal for both sides. The Knicks get a guy who can play, someone who can step in now and be a talent upgrade on the roster. Afflalo will get his chance to show what he can do — then he can opt out if he wants and tap into that television money pool.

They still got ways to go.

Kinda sucky that Jax isn't considering Rondo at all. Thought it'd make things at least bit more interesting in New York.

Yeah iam with Jeff here, this summer has being a bust for us.

I do like AA and we just picked up Robin Lopez too but but not even having money is enough for top free agents to come to NY theses days.

Players aren't stupid. They see how dysfunctional this franchise is. They don't care about The Big Apple, hanging with stars or marketing their brand. They want to W-i-N. They won't win in NY or LA.

I think Melo does sadly.

Totally agree about everything else in your post.

I think the top 3 worst ran teams in the league are the Kings, Sixers and Knicks and players know that.

Afflalo contributes virtually nothing aside from 3pt shooting and volume scoring. He won't have Ty Lawson to help him get his shot either. Poor signing by the Knicks.

Since when is Afflalo a good defender ?

Good thing for the Knicks it's only 2 years.

He has a reputation as a good defender, if nothing else. Here's one site that puts that theory to the test: A Play By Play Video Breakdown of Arron Afflalo's Defense Against the San Antonio Spurs

Well, everyone can be a great defender for a game.

SportVU and real defensive plus-minus have him listed as bellow average. Especially the real plus-minus. He's not even in the top 50 shooting guards in the least two years.

Perhaps a hangover from a time when his defensive stats were better? He seems to have the tools and the instincts to be a good defender, and demonstrates them at least occasionally.

Possibly. He also had some good offensive years, but that's probably behind him.

Desperate measures.

He should be a decent defender at the very least. He's rated higher than what he has shown us in last couple years but it's noteworthy he didn't play a role of primary perimeter defender.

The Knicks best bet on perimeter now is Afflalo. He'll be put to a challenge now.
